When he says he wants to break every world record he's not thinking about the marathon..... The 100m, 200m, and 400m, are ALL going down because *THIS IS JOSHUA CHEPTEGEI BABY!*
But in all seriousness, I'd love to know Cheptegei's VO2 max. The highest I've ever heard of for a runner is 92.0 mL/(kg·min) for both Matt Carpenter and Kilian Jornet. I read somewhere that Kipchoge's VO2 mas is 89.7. And according to letsrun Haile Gebrselassie's VO2 max was either 91 or 92-93 (He also had a resting heartbeat of 29 bpm ! ). Would love to know the values/results for some of the other running GOATs.
After watching Joshua Cheptegei broke multiple world records, I really thought that he has the best chance to break the official 2 hour marathon on the road. He might not have the kick like Bekele or Mo Farah but he is very very metronomic. He can hit very specific pace even without pacers. The sub 2 hour marathon is really in danger.
He sets his pace within the first kilometer and locks in. That's what makes him such a powerful runner. I could see him getting a better kick. He had a good sprint in the world championship 10,000m
Sometimes when I'm running at my 9 minutes per mile pace, puffing and panting, I think of Joshua, and my face lights up, and I finish my half hour session soaring to 8m50s/mile . For those few dizzy, exhausting, exhilarating moments, I AM Cheptegei! 😀
That, plus until Joshua runs an actual marathon you can really compare him with the GOAT Eliud. Facts are one thing but estimates in endurance sports are another. Just because you can run 12s 100m doesn't mean you can do a sub 4 min mile.
Yep Selemon Barega, andamlak belihu, Yomif Kejelcha, tadesse Worku, Rhonex Kipruto, Kibiwot Kandie, and Jacob Kiplimo have aswell huge potential for the marathon
Yes you cannot say who is the future because last year 2022 Kelvin kiptum Ran 2:1:53 and he is only 23yrs now he 3rd fastest of all time in marathon after kipchogeb and bekele though he has not been doing so well in 5000 and 10000m
Comparison of fallen legend (may his soul rest in peace) Sammy Wanjiru who unfortunately get buried at age of 24. His junior WR of 10000m (26:41,75) has been shining since 2005 which he did at 18yo in same race just behind prime time Kenenisa Bekele. When he was 20yo he held half marathon WR with 58:33 it was 10years before carbon plate era. 2008 Peking at age of 21 he became youngest Olympic Marathon gold medalist in history. Unforgettable day to watch young boy shuttle in heat and smog of metropol without pacers and just foam under his feet clocking 2.06:xx still standing OR 🙏
Yeah, another great video, thank you TRP👍🏿💯👏🏿. Now I may be biased because like Joshua am from the Pearl of Africa But IMHO he is the New Next GOAT of Distance running💯
I’m so excited to see Joshua focus more on the longer road races, but if the plan is to wait until after the 2024 Olympics I think the record eligible sub-2 hour marathon will have already happened. The way I see it too many guys are getting closer and closer, heck I’d say there’s even a chance the WR gets lowered this Sunday in Valencía where the deepest marathon field ever will be assembled with intentions of aiming for fast times! Such a great time to be a fan of the sport!!!
I'd personally like Cheptegei to focus on the 5k and really make that mark ridiculous to get, so 12:30 or bust. Shortly after that sub 26:00 10k. Then take that speed and start the transition to a road distance guy. Get that half marathon and marathon record down the road.
Cheptegei is a very good runner. I wouldn't say he deserves the record. He was a 13 minute 5000m runner and suddenly he breaks Kenenisas 12:37? That alone shows how much of an advantage he has with the technology now. Also when he broke the 10000m record he was fresh as there was a lock down with the pandemic. Add that with the staged event organized by NN in Valencia, its obvious he had an advantage. That's the same thing with the women's 10000m and 5000m. Tirunesh Dibaba would have ran way faster if she had the same level of support. Almaz Ayana broke the 10000m at the Olympics in Rio 2016. That is what it impressive. Also Bekele when he ran his 26:17 he wasn't as fresh as Cheptegei. He has won the world championships few weeks back. Not to mention his finance passing away in his arms. Bless her soul. So yeah Bekele could have really hammered the record even without the wavelights. I'm sure it will bother him now that he didn't really try to improve his records after 2004-2005.
Thats true, especially injuries, if he can avoid injuries then its true he might dominate but you Bekele was great but injuries could allow him to full dominate the marathons, he always falls out or get beaten.
If I'm not mistaken, Morceli said he had the ambition to hold every world record from 800m to 10000m. He held the 1500m, mile, 2000m and 3000m world record, and had 1:44.79 in the 800m, 2:13.73 in the 1000m, and 13:03.85 in the 5000m. So very impressive range, but a bit too optimistic.
Elite runners have such beautiful technique. I realised when I run fast my trailing foot tends to flip out to the side. It makes me look like a camp Kenneth Williams from the Carry On films.
I know right.. Sometimes I imagine myself running as smooth as these guys, but then someone showed me a picture or video of my running, then reality struck. That's why they are elites.

In my effort to run 1.5 miles I've learned how refreshing a good run can be but sometimes it hurts if not after then during so I wonder how much the women and men hurt when they do these runs.
It is impossible to know if he will be an exceptional marathon runner before he has done his first proper marathon. There have been so many great half marathon runners who never even came close to the same level on the marathon distance.
IT didn't surprise anyone in the know. As we understand how with :assisted' road races you can go fast. With wavelight tech on track it is almost certain he can break records there.

So yall are just going to ignore what Legesee said in Valencia's marathon press conference "I am ready to break the World record this sunday". And when you have 3.great pacers and 9 other guys sub 2:05 it's hard to arrgue against that.
Sub 20 is pretty ok for a freshman, sub 18 is really good for freshman. These are very realistic times if you put in the effort. (but anything sub 24 is great if you have just started running this year)
I ran 18:30 as a freshmen the last year as a sophomore ran 17:30 and our team finished 3rd at states. We are looking at second this year and then my senior year hopefully winning it since most of our varsity team is people from my grade since last year and our coach thinks we could easily have 5 runners at or below 16 minutes next year
Plus of course Joshua’s half marathon PR was set with barely any recovery from his 10k world record. Add that to what you mention, his lack of specific HM training (quite different to 10k), and surely he could smash that PR, and possibly even a WR... Sub two hour marathon? Definitely. 😊😊😊
The reality for Cheptegei is that most recently 4 kenyan athletes and one Ugandan all broke the 58 minute 1\2 marathon WR on the same day. Domination by any athlete is almost impossible these days.
I'm Ugandan so I will give you an answer based on what Cheptegei said on why he will be moving to marathons. He did state that marathons are less demanding in terms of training effort exhibited than track running. Also in terms of money it's pays a lot more than the truck as their multiple marathon's each year with high earning benefits. He gave this answer to the Ugandan media after winning the world Championship in Doha last year.
120 miles a week is nothing new. Elite distance runners have been doing that kind of mileage for decades. Carlos Lopez upped his training to 200+ km/week in preparation for the LA Olympics marathon, which he won in record time.
Can't compare Kipchoge speed with Cheptegei. But at the same time marathon is a different sport considering Hm or 10k. So even if Cheptegei running so efficiently u really don't know a sub 2h or Wr. Even Kipchoge can run faster in marathon becouse the distance is so high. Half marathon is almost like 10k in the modern Era. Athletes does run slightly slower then a 10k so it's pretty normal u think Cheptegei will be a 100% king in the marathon... But history teached marathon is another sport
The plain truth, is that his VO2 threshold must be amongst the highest ever recorded for any elite athlete. How many runners have tried to break through that elusive 13minute barrier for the 5000m or 3.1 miles. Joshua achieved his incredible 12min 51 sec on a very twisty Monaco course, and going around bends, robs a runner of valuable seconds. Had the course been less twisty, who knows what time he would have achieved. Also his 15K Austrian race, is pretty insane.
Sorry, but it's all about the pacing lights. We are going to break a lot of records in the next few years, perhaps even that one mile record!! Twenty years ago, give Hicham EL GUERROUJ some pacing lights and lets see what happens. Exactly, and it is going to happen now in our era. I'm not knocking those lights, as I think they are actually less of an advantage than the high tech track surfaces and shoes now available. Can you imagine Hicham running 3:43 on a cinder track in the year 1954? Anyway, stand by, as there will be many more records fall as a result of the pacing lights.
Africana runners in Coamo , Puerto Rico compite (San Blas half marathon) with excellent record but in Coamo arrivar 5, 6, 8, 9, position and Bad record. ....no everithing.

Ok lets see you break the most crazy one 24 h 303 km
@chubbyurma dude 4:40 km 24 hours average what !
Do a Sprinting
Not to forget, all these records are from one tribe, ( Kalenjins) only 5 million people dominating 90% of major races
He is not a Kalenjin. He is Gishu from Uganda
Time will tell but I believe that Jacob Kiplimo will end up having a better career than Cheptegei by the time its all over
NIKE organized a whole event just for cheptegei to target the records. He had help and time shouldn't have been official
Kenenisa got robbed
kiplimo has more natural talent in my opinion
We all know the secret that wasn’t mentioned 👀
lol, I too realized the size of that thing, anyway hes a great athele
He holds the WR in the 100M* *set down a Kenyan mountain
btw marathon pb is 600 hr
Jacob Kiplomo: hold my beer
He will not break
1. 2 mile outdoor record
2. 3000m indoor
3. 3000m outdoor
I agree. Komen's times are out of reach (except maybe for the 2 mile)!!
They both on african performance enhancers.
How come he lost 10k on Tokio????
Everyone has good and bad days
Didn't he finish fourth in the world half-marathon? Third runner-up, maybe
LUCKY
He is luck to be in an era with robotic pacing system with the wavelights and kangaroo shoes he wears..
Africana runners in Coamo , Puerto Rico compite (San Blas half marathon) with excellent record but in Coamo arrivar 5, 6, 8, 9, position and Bad record. ....no everithing.
