    As someone who worked for several years as a journalist, this clip, and this entire series, just hits like a bullet train! I worked for the (far) right-wing media outlets in my country, and levels of lies and misinformation that was shoved down the consumer's throat every day was staggering. And what made it even worse, people were not doing it out of conviction - most of them KNEW they were lying and manipulating the audience - and still did it with a laugh. I myself headed the science division of the news, which should be the least impacted by politics - but for every decent and quality news I'd put out, the chief editor would force-push 3 stories with conspiracy theories into the science segment.
    I literally felt like Don Quijote, fighting the windmills. I tried to engage with the audience, tried to provide the objective, verified and quality news - but they simply did not want that. They wanted their opinions verified. As Don said in one episode - you can never assume that the viewer does not already know everything.
    So while this is my favorite series ever, and I yearn for a news outlet like this and professional journalists with integrity - I saw firsthand that even when the audience gets that, they don't want it. So the premise of the Newsroom that, if you just give them quality they will come, is unfortunately a fantasy. People DO NOT want the truth. They want their words and ideas validated, no matter what they are. And the modern age gave them the ability to close into echo chambers and never have their ideas confronted, sinking deeper and deeper into delusions and fanaticism, pushing people further into the extremes of left and right, growing the chasm between them.
    News is #1 power in the world, and also the #1 problem.
    Which ever problem you have in your community, city, country, world - start digging for the core of the problem, you'll find the news agency at the bottom of that hole. Every. Single. Time.

      I'd love to agree with you. But to be honest, why should they?
      When News is a product, we can only blame the consumer for what the market says is profitable.
      If the Consumer won't adhere to an ethical standard, why should the Supplier?

    • @BrianRollinsVO
      @BrianRollinsVO 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easy to blame the news media for its current state, and they do have some blame upon them. But they are merely creating a product that people have demanded. The "old school" news programs lost out to the hot and flashy news of CNN and Fox News. People turned off intelligent reporting that they "disagreed with" and went to tabloid trash like Nancy Grace or hucksters like Bill O'Reilly and Tucker Carlson.
      There is still good, solid journalism out there. You just have to be willing to pay for it with a subscription. You aren't going to get full details on CNN or Fox. They are in a mad dash to be first, but never to be accurate. NBC/CBS/ABC only have 30 minutes to cover a staggering amount of news. If you want good journalism, you'll have to read and you'll have to pay for it.
      Demand better news and we'll get better news.

      Look at all the Trump lies, a true centrist network would state his lie is inaccurate and ignore it. Yet US networks spend hours debating his most outrageous claims with both right and left pundits, lending credence to the lie.

What are Jeff's specific qualifications that you feel make him a good candidate for office? The ability to read speeches on TV?

PS I am not an elitist, nor did I go to university, my parents could never have afforded it. I just feel there should be a standard that our elected officials meet & your new President lacks in empathy, humanity, decency & is a sociopath. Not to mention a sexual predator! Though this show is 20 - 20 hindsight it is factual and clearly shows that what was said in the negative of Bush and Obama for that matter, were truths - especially the W admin. To not see that is to be in dreamland and false. Yes, Sorkin is a certain type of writer but setting the record straight is what he can do in a show like this - but you denying its truths makes you one with the wrong agenda.

      Hi Theodore - I am a fan of Aaron Sorkin. From THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT - to WEST WING - To NEWSROOM - and hopefully beyond. All I was saying is that he clearly has his own agenda. His detractors would say he is far to liberal. I said I've seen much worse agendas. My meaning is that I prefer his views to many of those who come from the far right. Picasso said "Art is a lie that brings us closer to the truth". I hope that makes some sense. Best wishes, Ted

      I know i come into this conversation really late, and normally I don't post on super old comments, but as you seem like a reasonable man, I just want to put forth the idea, that the original comment says nothing about Aaron Sorkin being wrong in pushing what he pushed. I know that the word agenda is so charged with negative connotations, but realistically, everyone is colored by bias, and everyone has an agenda, it is part of the human experience. Like Will admits in his mission statement, He'll show his own opinions, but spare no effort in presenting opinions that contradict his own.
      The important part of having an agenda, is pushing it with integrity, ready to, should evidence come to the contrary of what you believe, be willing to vet, and assimilate it into your world view, as opposed to denying it as a gut reaction to the possibility you might have been wrong. And I think over the course of this show's 3 seasons they succeeded in that.
      While I'm not the most well versed in current events and modern politics, as a fan of the show, I definitely felt a fair representation of facts presenting during the show. In that, it is hard to argue they failed in.

    • @mckenzie.latham91

      Sorkin said he wanted the series to be an "idealistic, romantic, swashbuckling, sometimes comedic but very optimistic, upward-looking look at a group of people who are often looked at cynically."

    • @lgmmrm
      @lgmmrm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mckenzie.latham91 To be fair, and this is from someone considered to be the enemy by the right and left, the media has, in the last 4-5 years, devoted themselves to choosing *their* candidate, and back them while tearing down whoever stands against them.
      Being more on the right socially, I definitely disagree with about 80% of Sorkin's ideology and agenda, but I can respect his writing.
      I also love that even though he was definitely on the Right and Sorkin is definitely on the left, that there's a line in here paying homage to William F. Buckley. While I, firmly on the paternalistic side of conservatism, disagree heavily with Buckley's fusionism, he was, by and large, the colossus on the "conservative" side during the Golden Age of the nightly news, and like Rather and Kronkite, each of which had an agenda on their own, was not as crassly sensationalistic as the current era of newscasters.

    Dear TH-cam, I have never, once, watched one of the ads that you make me endure before, and during, a video. Every time you intrude on my privacy, I mute the sound and keep my eyes firmly on the little box in the bottom corner of the screen, until the word "Skip" appears, or until the little yellow line catches up with the the little box that says "Video will play soon". I don't know who advertises during those moments and have no interest in finding out.
