    Great footage, I’ll have to watch this again on my TV. I see where you were going with the waterfall image, funny thing about composition I learned when I started to paint is that the details, such as the logs piling up at the base of the frame kind of redirect the composition. Ultimately I would paint a combination of the two images from a slightly, and impractical to photograph from angle-and it is that image, that as a photographer, I would fantasize about going back to shoot a higher vantage point. Finally accepting what I cannot change, because either image is beautiful. I love the red leaves… I wonder how much iron oxide red I have on hand.

    Fascinating video (and photos!) so if I understand you correctly, you scan the film with a digital camera and macro lens, import that negative into Lightroom and edit it the way you want from there? That’s pretty cool. Do you ever send in your film to be processed or do you do it all yourself?

    • @DylanSpitz

    Hey Dylan, You said you set your IS0 to 400 for the portra 800. Did you let the lab know you pulled the film? or did you just let them develop it at box speed (800)? Turned out great!

    • @DylanSpitz
      @DylanSpitz  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! I actually develop and scan everything at home! But no, I wouldn’t tell the lab anything. The purpose of rating it at 400 for me is to purposely overexpose by about 1 stop. To me that’s when the portra films really perform their best and have cleaner shadows.

  • @DylanFox
    @DylanFox หลายเดือนก่อน

    You mentioned over exposing by a stop at the start. Do usually prefer to expose Portra 800 at box speed?

      I've been eating portra a stop over but occasionally it seems to go too far over. In camera metre might be playing tricks or metering for the shadows too much

    great quality! Thanks for sharing. Maybe a really stupid question but i have no experience with shooting film. Are those film shots edited afterwards after converting the negative? or is that the result after processing the film only? Keep up the nice vids :)

    • @DylanSpitz
      @DylanSpitz  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thank you! Not a stupid question at all, I had the same confusion when I was first starting out. All the negatives are scanned and dialed in with controls similar to what's found on traditional lab scanners, such as color balance, contrast, brightness, exposure, saturation, etc. as I convert them in the software. Basically, by doing it yourself, you're able to make those decisions rather than a lab technician doing what they feel is best. You can of course then edit them past that however much you'd like after making a .tiff copy in Lightroom if you wish. I find I pretty much never use anything past the negative lab pro controls while converting - it kind of gives me a creative boundary to work within which I enjoy. Hope that makes sense!

    What’s considered a good but not too expensive price for film stocks?

    • @DylanSpitz
      @DylanSpitz  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that’s pretty subjective, really. I’m not THAT unhappy with current prices, given the principles of supply and demand and economics. The way I look at it - shooting film is absolutely an unnecessary expense. And as with all unnecessary or entertainment-based expenses, you justify the price up to your own limits. Do I want it to keep going up? No, lol.
