June, 1989 - used this as a means of relaxation during university finals. It worked. Not only that, it also re-awakened my love for the martial arts movie genre, as well as demonstrated that it was possible to have an enthralling and entertaining plot from start to finish, and yet, no-one got killed. @@Lennon959 IIRC, Lau had a period of directing movies which were downright violent and bloody, e.g. "Shaolin Martial Arts" and "The Invincible Pole Fighters". I forgot where I read or viewed it, but supposedly he reached a point where he wanted more to put before the viewer some of the philosophy of kung fu (such as displayed in "Heroes Of The East" and even "Martial Club"), rather than focus on the violence and bloodshed.
@@waynewilliams9388 the "defangs scene" in the last fight in 8 diagrams pole fighter was cut here in my country. The heroes of the east is I think the bloodless sb martial arts movies I've ever seen so far.

The one thing I noticed is that some of lau kar leung's movies are a lot less violent compared to some Chang cheh's movies
