The r8 actually was a bit of a departure for the company as its built off an r8 spider rather than the coupe. Think its was so they could fit the roof scoop easier
How is fitting a roof easier than fitting a scoop? There's two rumors circulating online and even being reposted by some second rate racing websites. One is the scoop thing you mentioned which never made any sense to me. The other is one about clearance issues with roll protection. The latter doesn't make any sense either since the GT3 version handles this issue fine. I've only been able to find one comment by Audi on why they went with the Spyder: “We have a sports car that is an R8, but we don’t have a super sports car, so we went out and created our own,” Reinke told Sportscar365. The top line of the model is the spyder, so we thought: let’s do something with that. So we gave it a hard top, and that gave us a unique possibility to create a [car with a] character of its own."
Mike, could you explain a bit more what you mean by the MC20 GT2 being "inspired by the 296"? The two don't share a chassis, powertrain, or much in the way of design (Klaus Busse designed the MC20; the 296 was designed by Ferrari in-house). Maserati and Ferrari have no further factory relations ever since Ferrari left FCA/Stellantis and went public, so I'm curious what relationship you're getting at. 🤔
Just the overall style and engine type. You’re right, they’re not linked in terms of business, but the design down to the distinct exhaust exit, and the 3.0L TT V6 seems to borrow points from the Ferrari.
@@SimRacing604 The 296 was released after the MC20 I think. But actually the Maserati engine has some Ferrqri F1 derived tech for the combustion chamber.
I just took the time to download and test these GT2s on a fast track like Monza, first impressions after a few hotlaps: GT2RS ran very well, behaving like a heavy rear balanced car yet easy to control, to my surprise a lot of fun just the sound is authentic thus a bit boring. The view is wide open, big different to the next one… Maserati was the biggest surprise, even more controllable, fast and great sounding. The view much narrower but you get used to that easily. Lambo has the best sound IMhO but does not turn as well as the Masi Merc drove like a speed boat, can it brake? XBOW looks fancy, but drives boring and is it fast on the straights? Still need to test the other porc and the audi…if anyone is interested Indid first custom tune by following the recent guides.
N24 will be extremely fun in ACC with GT3, GT2, GT4, GTC, and TCX. Personally a big fan of the new GT2. All that power without as much aero just makes for some brilliant driving and racing. Of course GT3 will always be king in ACC, but I think GT2 has a higher shot than GT4 at retaining population. The thing about GT4s I feel is that they are easier to drive than GT3s while also being slower so a lot of fun is lost for most people. The racing is great, but the driving isn't as fun. But GT2s are more powerful and more difficult to drive so there's a lot of fun to be gained. These GT2s have around the same top speed at conventional tracks using set gear ratios as GTEs do at Le Mans in their low downforce kits. It's pretty crazy. Even though entries is down in GT2 European, I does seem GT2 is gaining some OEM interest, especially from manufacturers wanting to get into GT racing. Brabham joined although they didn't run this past year and aren't included in the pack unfortunately. Had two manufacturers join this past season with Mercedes and Maserati of course. I think what's really hurting GT2s is that it's seen as a gentlemen's club right now, and because of that along with general pace being slower there's a weird group think that they are easier to drive and more boring than GT2s, when in reality it's the opposite. I would love to see what a top pro in GT3 could do with a GT2. It was a similar story for LMP3 until they came to iRacing. Everyone thought they were easier to drive than LMP2, and then the Ligier JSP320 was added to iRacing and people realized how unruly they are. Everyone thought LMP3 was going to be dead at release, but they are still pretty popular and going strong. I think GT2s could be the same in ACC where obviously it's not as nearly as popular as GT3, but it won't be difficult to find some full and competitive races.
The GT2 will be a lot of fun to those of us, myself included, who love to try and dial out the bad tendencies with setups and MOTEC…looking forward to hours of testing and getting into a modern 1970’s race car….
MOTEC is fun until you use the meta setups and throw everything out the window. The suspension histogram means nothing when you just want to minimize the rear from lifting when braking to decrease braking bias (by maximizing rear slow rebound), and want to maximize the front lifting when accelerating out of the apex by minimizing front slow rebound. It looks ugly on MOTEC, but a game's a game, and code is code... And min spring and bump stop rates... And min front height. None of this adds up, but somehow, it works... You have to really try to bottom out your suspension with the above settings...
Hey Mike do you realize that when you were driving the 935 you had traction control turned off? I've driven all of the GT2s and I quite like the 935 personally. The Maserati and Audi are my favorites but most are fun to drive in their own ways. Just curious why you didn't drive the Lamborghini and the Ferrari. Or were they not included in your early access? Great video as always!
I figured Moby would be your least favorite. I've never driven something like that in a sim where I could connect to it either. For some reason, I connect best with the 911's. Looking forward to the console release of this DLC. Great video as always Mike. God bless and race on 🏁
I mean I never say no to content but between gt1, gt3, gt4, gte, etc. There's enough of this kind of stuff. I'd probably rather they just added more cars to those classes. I'd friggin LOVE to see lambos in AMS2, I don't use them in iracing but I like having them in the field, they just look great
Another excellent video, Mike. I did not give the GT2 cars much thought but, watching your video, I am rethinking my view. Oh, and I agree with you, on Mt. Panorama… I greatly enjoy watching races there but do not enjoy driving sim cars there. Thank you for taking the time to present these cars so well.
My only issue with the Porsche GT2 is I keep hitting the rev-limiter :P I am mainly racing the 992 GT3 in ACC and the difference between the two cars engine characteristics is huge. Will give it some more time though, and of course I need to find some good setup tweaks.
GT2 used to be even faster before it turned into rich people class. Now its a bit like a Frankenstein, yes you got more horsepower but GT3 are faster. For example on Bathurst i can hit 280 on straight in Bentley no problem. Its a nice addition and breath of fresh wind in to the sails in ACC, but i doubt it will be played frequently. But its a nice DLC reasonably priced.
Interesting format and an enjoyable watch. It's so funny how the GT2 ranking in these first impressions is all over the place. For example the Porsche has been anywhere from very bottom to the top like you have. For me the Maserati is where it's at and AMG was way faster than what all the reviews made me think.
Ok i was skeptical about this DLC. Skipping for now was my intention but... bought it yesterday and man its amazing! Every car has its own character, the RBR is amazing. Couldn't stop playing 😂
I came back to ACC after being frustrated with the FFB and noticed a change in handling. Suddenly the game is fun and I can feel slides happening (not as well still as AC but there’s an improvement to me). Is it just me or did they change something in the last few updates? Also, I agree with you on the Porsche. Super fun!!!
@@GaragebuiltOriginal - I recently swapped from Fanatec (CSL DD 8Nm) to Asetek (Invicta) and I'm surprised with how much more communicative the force feedback in ACC seems. It is still not up there with the original AC, but I think some of that is down to the GT3 cars themselves. The GT2's are actually quite lively.
@@texnorthman I just got done testing almost all the gt2 cars on the ring. One thing I can say is adjustments never stop either in game or external apps that allow adjustments. You have to match your adjustments to your driving style. I also played around with my ffb settings and that in itself made a world of difference. Not everything is the games fault each time.
The fact that some of these cars kind of suck really makes me feel confident that devs like Kunos are actually modeling cars after their IRL equivalents the best they can. I can think one sim in particular where they are bad about "cloning" data with maybe a few minor tweaks, and just giving other model generic skins to fill out the class. Especially when ALL the cars in said classes have the exact same horsepower, weight, etc. displayed.
GT2 has already been buried. RiP. They'll still make a significant showing in multiple class community races! They'll make for carnage, carnage, carnage! The BOP is sooo bad, no one wants to touch the GT2s.

Is that so? Interesting. Still an overall “safe” approach, but clever engineering to go with the Spider. Thanks for the info
