What's cool is even as an American who's never played cricket the rules and terminology are similar to baseball so we weren't totally lost in what they were saying. It was super cool to learn other types of lingo. Now in the context of some of those terms it gives a new perspective to the episode
what feels most similar is running, except we got a diamond as a base for it. I always thought a cricket bat would be swung the same as a baseball bat but XD boy was I wrong
A few references that people may have also missed - Bandit's narration notes the events are so far in the past he cant remember whose birthday it was indicating he is likely talking about these events at the time shown in the flash forward at the end. - Rusty is shown positioning Dusty's hands in the catching position prior to him batting - A term Margie missed was "shot" the 2nd time he hits Bandit which is short for "Good shot" referring to him hitting the ball well. - Tiny has a sub-continental accent (India/Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka) all countries with massive cricket playing cultures and tradition. - Digger's name is literally slang for Soldier - Either Digger or his Mum must have told Rusty's Dad about Tiny and Rusty's struggles with pace bowling. - All of Diggers friends are show celebrating Rusty's successful pull shot including Tiny. - Future Rusty is wearing the Australian Test Cricket uniform indicating he has reached the pinnacle of the sport. - the ground future Rusty is at is the Gabba in Brisbane meaning it's almost certainly the first test match of the Summer and also near where Bluey and Rusty have grown up - Rusty is what is known as a middle order batsman as he heads out onto the ground on his own at the fall of a wicket rather than an opener where the 1st two batsmen would walk out at the same time at the start of an innings. - So the ending puts more context into Bandit's narration as he's telling someone he doesn't know or who doesn't know Rusty personally about his history with Test Cricketer Rusty - Given the narration it's possible that what is shown at the end is Rusty's first match at that level and Bandit is probably at the ground watching that regaling people with stories of how he knew Rusty when he was just a pup.
@chch_chris - Could be I think the term has been around for a while and I do know the mild expletive it is being substituted for. I am sure people have heard the term in a cricket contest a bit over the years. The Waugh one would make sense given the age of the shows creators as they are probably too young to remember the World Series Cricket era guys using the term.
I’m from Alberta Canada and had absolutely no idea how Cricket worked or the rules. But after I watched the episode, I took to TH-cam to watch a half hour video on the history and rules of the sport. At the end When Rusty is walking and does a fist bump with his future self, I got a little teary eyed….
Wow that was a great breakdown of the cricket terminology in this episode! I reckon anyone who is not familiar with the sport will have a much better understanding of the episode now. Hopefully you guys will become intersted in cricket now, and will watch it sometime, it's a great sport!
Clarification: the reason it's "6 and out" is you generally want to discourage people hitting it over the fence, on the roof, etc. Because then you've got to go get it and you could get in trouble (e.g. kids in primary school hitting it over the fence then you have to jump the fence to get it) or lose the ball entirely.
What a fun episode! Parents always tried to strongarm me into sports, so I never thought it was much of my thing. Learning about the sport through the episode was pretty fun! Kinda want to try the sport out myself now
And so Rusty Week continues! Fantastic video, Margie. I knew literally zero of these terms when watching the episode, so your breakdown/translation is super helpful. There really is more to cricket than hitting a ball around
I just realized rusty was also playing cricket in fairies when the heelers go to the front yard. Anyhow, Rusty week has been great I have new favorite characters that I hope are here to stay! Cricket is also easily my favorite new episode. Keep up the great work, love your videos!
Another detail I really enjoyed and noticed on my rewatch is that the spots on the grass behind the house -- the one Rusty stood on and the one where the stump is -- are visibly scuffed.
ugh i’m so sad i couldn’t watch this live, i was busy 😭 but for this episode i pretty much just guessed the terminology and i had already known a little bit and i could piece it together pretty well! still, i loved this so much and i cannot wait for more rusty or jack focused episodes!!!
I am so happy that the episode is using so many aussie slangs that was currently used in real life cricket thank you so much for analysing the show what they said and what they mean it’s very excellent show I appreciate it. 😀😀😀 Edit: I’m Australian but I’m not bothered what they usually say in the show I just love the Australian slang. :)
As a cricket player most people think just as bluey said “it’s just about hitting a ball on the ground” and last season of cricket last year i ended up getting my first 4 wickets (I recently started..)
I feel that Bluey relates to all of us. Kids AND parents. I know y’all know that but like it just features our childhood in 3 seasons. Examples are Tina, where Bluey and Bingo hate being bossed around so they make up a new GIANT friend. Another time is in “Musical Statues”. I’m sure we all played musical statues when we were young. Also, “Postman and Ground’s Lava”. If we leave “Postman” aside, “Ground’s Lava” remains. As kids, we would all have played the floor is lava. You would try to stand on top of something when someone shouts it. I’m also sure that we all have watched life-lesson cartoons just like Bingo watching Cat Squad in “Turtleboy”. Also, “Promises”, where Bluey breaks her promise. I’m sure we all broke our promises as kids. And the person we promised would say “But…you promised”. Will update soon.
This is a great episode for those non-aussies out there who have no idea what's going on. It's like if there was a show where they had heaps of baseball references and I'd be like whaaaaat?
I love this ... Good job Bluey. A fabulous ode to Aussie cricket. Only missing the underarm controversy of 1981 😉😉🏏🏏 ❤ From across the ditch. What a beautiful game we play.
Cricket looks fun tbh. I’d definitely stick to the plastic version though 😅 my leg is a liability and I don’t want to ruin the fun by getting reinjured or being in a lot of pain. The plastic would prevent severe pain and/or injury if my bad leg, ankle or hip gets hit and the lack of competitive play would make it easier for me to step aside as needed :)
Ok so I have a cricket question do you switch off side and leg side for a right handed batter versus a left handed batter or is everyone force to bat the same way?
Off and leg sides are switched for a left-handed batsman. This means the commentators change what they refer to as leg and off and the fielding team switch their formations too.
@@dmi33 Thank you , now just imaging a switch hitter messing with the other team by just switching sides to bat. I had a friend do that once he batted left his first at bat and got a homer then his next at bat he saw players move further away for him so he batted right to mess with them.
5:25 makes me think of a curveball in baseball xD makes me also consier the laces on a baseball and if that has a similar effect/ either that or a slowball D: ahm not that big of a sports fan
Yes you are right same physics as a baseball curve ball. You use the position of the seam (stitching) on the ball to create laminar and turbulent air flow on different sides of the ball which makes it curve or swing through the air. Cricket balls do not get replaced during the game like baseballs so if one side of the ball gets stuffed or rough this can also help create turbulent flow to increase the swing. ❤ from 🇦🇺
As a Brit who plays cricket I was very confused at first watching this episode but now I understand lol. Bit awkward to talk about with The Ashes going on currently....
I wouldn't say 2 to 1 margin. Sachin Tendulkar is close second, for that fact he faced much tougher bowlers of Australia and was the lone warrior in India. It's much tougher
@@keriddunk1520 hat is ridiculous. The standard was just the same back then and Bradman faced bodyline with no helmet etc. of course sachin was a great (but only half as great)

Although polishing the ball on one side can help cause the ball to swing, its not the correct answer. To swing the ball it requires that the seam is pointing in the right direction and the release of the ball is where the swing occurs. The narrator here is confused with swing bowling and reverse swing bowling. Reverse swing bowls tend to happen with an older ball and as the name suggests the ball curves in the opposite direction than what would be expected. There are great tutorials about on how to swing a ball, just google them but the narrator is incorrect on this instance.
I love this episode but it’s such a shame that Smith was used as the model for the batting. The man has stained cricket forever with the sandpaper. There are so many other incredible Australian batsmen who haven’t shamed the game that could’ve been used, particularly given the aims of the episode.

That was a good discussion on aussie cricket terminology and liked that you included some references to some well-known players of this sport.
