VCR was grinding gears due to a bad infrared LED.

    This VCR came in my shop making a gear grinding sound as soon as it was plugged in, and it would not load my tape. It turned out that the infrared emitter had died, and it made the tape loading carriage think I was trying to insert a tape, so the gears would grind as it was attempting to load a nonexistent tape. This seems to be a common problem with the dual DVD VCR combination units. Since the IR LED continues to glow even with the power being off, Since the IR LED remains on even when the unit it turned off, I think it would be a good idea to leave your VCR unplugged when not in use.
    The unit I'm working on is a Sharp. Model # DV-RW550U

    great Job pal...i've had a few that were making that noise and I told the cust. it just wasn't worth repairing....I never knew that would be the possible trouble....
    Thanks for the tip...great work Dave..!!

      Your welcome. Until I learned what caused this I thought the gears were out of alignment, and I may have made the same mistake, only to later discover how simple a fix this is.

    Thanks for the info! I have a Kodak digital camera and two cell phones with cameras and they all pick up IR LED's which is very handy. Thanks again!

    Great video! This is exactly my symptom, an initial grind sound when I plug it in. But when I used my camera I see the glow of the light under the prism. Is the LED either working or not working? If it is working any other theories how to get that grinding noise to stop

      Hi, if you haven't already, maybe just try cleaning the prism and the sensors with isopropyl alcohol. The light could just be blocked by years of dirt.

    Hi.. I've got a VCR with this exact same mechanism with a similar but different problem. The tape will not fully load, it gets about half way them makes the same gear grinding noise.. then ejects the tape. Have opened it up to see what's going on, can't see where the problem is. Doesn't get as far as the tape flap being opened, travels a small distance then jams at a slight angle before it should begin decent down. Any ideas?? Thanks :-)

      Should mention the LED is working fine.

      Sounds like a possible mechanical alignment problem, or a broken cam on the tape loading mechanism.

    The infrared shines however it still makes the clicking when the tape is in then it shuts off

      What about the Two IR photo detectors on the side of the loading carriage. Can you measure a voltage drop across them when the IR LED light shines on them?

    Can you put any standard infrared led in

    • @GrantsPassTVRepair
      @GrantsPassTVRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure what qualifies as standard, but here are the specifications on the IR transmitter and receiver LEDs I purchased on eBay a few months ago, and they seem to work fine, although it took me a while to determine their polarity. The plus and minus was reversed based on what the longer and shorter wire on the LEDs were suppose to be, and it took me a while to figure that out.
      Unfortunately I don't have a part number, but here are the specifications.
      The receiver LED size was 5mm. Wavelength was 940 MM. Forward voltage was 1.1 to 1.4 volts. Forward current was 30MA.
      Pulse current 75 MA
      The transmitter size was 5mm Wavelength was 940 nm. Forward voltage was 1.27 to 1.4 volts. Forward current was 30 MA, and the reverse current was10 ua.

      Thank you sir I will check them out.From China?
      I see a guy on here he soldered the connectors of the led and it worked without replacing it. I thought I might take one from an old remote lying around the house.

    How do I re-align the gears?

    • @GrantsPassTVRepair
      @GrantsPassTVRepair  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gear alignment can be a real headache. It's not something I could tell you in a few lines of text. I would need to have the unit in front of me, and even then I might not be able to do it.
