    Very helpful video. I have so many mixed feelings about using someone else's work (thinking about public domain images from rawpixel for example), I feel like it's too easy to be allowed... And I feel kinda guilty about doing it even though I know it's legal...

    You mentioned patent images as a source. You are correct that the images are created into the public domain and even if patents are created they eventually expire. What you have to watch out for is that the application for the patent might be copyrighted and, if so, you can't use that image without the copyright owner's consent.

      Yes it is weird - smiley faces are apparently trademarked (at least some of them). That's the downside to these POD sites - anyone can file a claim and sometimes the site just pulls your design (or sometimes it is a legitimate infringement). Tough to tell. Thank you for the head's up!

    Regarding pixabay as mentioned in your last video (and similar sites like pexels/unsplash), whilst I know they say the images are free, i’m always a bit nervous as you don’t know who actually uploaded the image... for example, I could steal some images from an amazing photographers website and then just upload them to pixabay without them knowing... I have certainly seen some images on pixabay that I am certain shouldn’t be used by others... is there a way to be 1000% sure :p

    • @Melissa-YupMelissa
      @Melissa-YupMelissa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use pixabay, but not just straight without altering. I change colors, or add it to a bigger design I'm working on, or completely morph it to something else. That way even if the image was uploaded to pixabay by someone nepharious, the image I ultimately produce is something totally new.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What Melissa said. Totally agree, couldn't have said it better myself. I don't just take one public domain image and upload it - I add something (words, change the design, merge, distort, etc) and make it "art".

    Thank you for super information..a thing i find interesting ..i come from the music world..your videos are full of quality content- powerful information and resources- and you clearly know your stuff inside out- but because you keep the full focus - on your information- on 'the product ' - and not on YOU - because your own desire for personal attention is so low- you therefore don't 'blow up' on youtube! It's really interesting - if you were some 20 year old making 'cool' videos with some hit song on in the background ? You might have double the number of subscribers- even though you might only sell 1 t shirt a month!:) I'm sure you understand what i mean- A version of the squeeky wheel gets the most grease! And just like the musicians world- it means water finds its level- so only people over a certain intelligence level will find your channel- as you are not selling 'bells and whistles"! However -i personally thank you very much- your depth and smarts are not lost on the lets say 'more layered' people out here! Keep it up Sir

      It depends - if you and me upload the exact same public domain image to Redbubble, then whoever uploaded it first could lodge a copyright complaint (and Redbubble might take down the second image). So the issue would not be that the image is public domain, but rather that the 3rd party site has a rule against duplication of designs. I always recommend modifying your public domain image in some way (add text, change color, etc) to make it original enough so that you don't risk a strike.

      You might - but if you got the strike, it would be because the image might be an exact copy of the same public domain image that someone else uploaded. I would recommend modifying the image somehow (add a background, crop, flip, filter, etc.)
