    You asked what it looks like from the ground. When we only had special forces in Afghanistan the ac130 was one of the aircraft that was used heavily for air support. One of the Afghanistan rebel armies our special forces were embedded and working with. When asking for the ac130 the general would ask for "the airplane with the laser". Referring to the howitzer, when watching it be fired from the ground he thought it was a laser gun rather than an artillery piece. Probably in no small part to the absurdity of the idea of putting an artillery piece in an aircraft lol

    That is a Gau-12. It’s similar to what is used on some fighter jets. It fires 25mm rounds at a rate of 3600 to 4200 rounds per minute. So yea... that burst you saw was probably at least 2000 rounds!!!

    Artur I think what you're missing is that those 25MM rounds are all HE or High Explosive. So each one of those "Bullets" is in fact a 25MM grenade. So that first 700 round burst was effectively a continuous stream of 700 grenades.

We would do Aim 1 laser target handoff using NVGs from infantry (with glint tape on their uniform and equipment to avoid FF) and then Aim 1 laser handoff to Ac 130 who would light it up with their IR spotlight (1km x 1km square) and we would move on to next infantry target handoff. All without radio calls or targets knowing they were being lit.

    13:55 Laser guided munitions... Paveway guided bombs, Hellfire missiles, and some guided artillery shells. The designator can be anywhere in line of sight, on the same or another aircraft, a vehicle, 'crew served' or a book-sized handheld device. Not sure when the ground LLDR were developed, but USAF was using laser guided munitions in Vietnam with an F-4's RSO pointing a handheld laser. They'd tested the first ones way back in 1965...

  • @willienillie3589
    @willienillie3589 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The target marking technique I believe you are referring to is known as matching sparkle. This is when you use an IR Pointer to show the aircraft where your target is located and ask the aircraft to confirm it's location by also using their IR Pointer to mark the target. This way you can confirm that both the JTAC/JFO and the aircraft are looking at the same target. The other technique to mark the target is marking by laser. There is a big difference between an IR Pointer and a Laser Designator. The laser designator uses PRF codes that bombs with guidance systems use to essentially catch the laser and follow it to the target. This is extremely dangerous as the bomb can catch the laser and go the opposite direction. For this technique, you would set up a laser safety cone that is basically the only path the the aircraft can travel so that when it releases the bomb, it doesn't land on friendly troops. Sorry it's kind of long but I hope this explains what you were asking about.

    The M109 Paladin is another fun piece of equipment. It is a 155mm tracked artillery piece. Standard high explosive rounds have a range of about 16 miles and rocket guided rounds atleast double that. Even nuclear explosives have been developed to fire from it. When firing with a full charge (or pouring some gun oil down the bore), enough flame exits the muzzle brake to shroud nearly the whole vehicle.

    _"Just give us one"_ - One won't be enough. If you want a minimum of one AC-130 available on call 24/7 you would need a minimum of _eight_ AC-130s
    Two would be undergoing maintenance
    Three would be on the ground being refueled and rearmed
    One would be returning from a mission
    One would be enroute to area of operation
    And one would be on station providing fire support
    And this scenario assumes a pretty high availability rate of 75%
    As cool as the AC-130 is, it's not what the Kaitsevägi needs.

    I'm pretty sure that using the laser to point out targets is called "lazing a target"

    • @BlackWolf18C
      @BlackWolf18C 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two types of laser target marking. A laser designator like the AN/PED-1 uses a pulsed laser that blinks in a code sequence extremely rapidly, and the guidance system for a laser guided missile or bomb will home in on that laser point if it is tuned to the same code. This allows various units to each designate individual targets for particular munitions simultaneously and prevents the enemy from using a simple laser device to divert incoming munitions. The second kind is an aiming laser like the AN/PEQ-15, which is an IR laser for use as an aiming assistance device while using NVGs. While not intended for use as a target marking system, they have been regularly employed as such to allow pilots to easily determine the location of friendlies and targets. No munition will actually follow an aiming laser.

    A heat blanket won't save you. Because of the FLIR Sensors can switch from target heat mode to environmental heat mode. Like what you saw at 16:40. The camera sees the heat of the ground under you and you're blocking your own heat you show up as a big black dot. You are fucked either way to Sunday. lol. Target heat mode is just the invertion of the colors where the environment is blackened and the targets glow.

    AC-130U Spooky has a five barreled 25mm GAU-12 Equalizer rotary cannon, a 40mm L60 Bofors, and am M137 105mm howitzer. Currently, the USAF are replacing the AC-130Us with the AC-130W and AC-130J. These utilize a Mk44 Bushmaster II 30mm cannon, the M137 105mm howitzer, wing-mounted pylons for Hellfire missiles and SDB/SDB2 (small diameter bombs), and launch tubes near the aft for Griffin A missiles and precision ordnance.

    It's a 105mm Howitzer. My dad served as a Seabee machinist in Vietnam. We have an ashtray he made. I was in my late teens when he finally told me what it was... "that's the butt end of a 105, I cut up several for other soldiers."

    Hey Artur my uncle is a Lt. Commander on the USS Ronald Reagen which is a nuclear aircraft carrier, we have things called tiger cruises where family and friends of the crew can stay a weekend on the ship seeing jets take off and land, firing the carriers weapons ect. Also shooting a football off the deck using the catapult and it coming back and seeing who can catch it for a prize. Youre more than welcome to come along haha

    Regarding the comment about the laser at 13:50, thats not how it works. Essentially what they're doing is measuring distince and figuring out what grid coordinates they want the ac-130 to hit, then relay that information to the communications aboard the plane. Whether that request is granted is, well, up in the air
