His view is surprisingly nuanced. "I don't want to reinforce the notion that culturally feminized clothing = LGBTQ." And he's right: anti-trans violence isn't about the clothes, not entirely. I would argue that it's about the challenge to assumptions about gender roles, what is "natural", and who you're allowed to bully in this culture. Great interview, thank you.
This just emphasizes the dualism of clothing. On a personal level, it can help you express yourself. But simultaneously, gender-limiting clothing is arbitrary, as fashion and social norms changes over time. Men wore dresses and heels for centuries. Some people are so limited.

I feel that on so many levels, I buy mens clothes because they are often cheaper and better quality, aimed with more respect and less whimsical fast fashion. I feel angry that this is the way our options are.

If you open your mind a little bit and realize it's just fabric, it doesn't change who he is as a person, then it should become less weird. Why is it okay for women to wear suits and still be considered feminine but it isn't okay for men to wear dresses and skirts and still be considered manly?

I love this! I knew a cis male who loved what he called “cross dressing”. He was a man who loved women and also loved women’s clothes. It’s so refreshing to see this getting positive media attention so we can abolish ideas about gendered clothing. Thank you, sir!

It’s still heavily gendered but it’s ok. I’m a woman and I like to wear ties every now and then, it’s okay to wear clothes typically attributed to the opposite gender sometimes, or all the time.

Also how great it will be when women can wear what they want! Clothing that doesn't need to be feminine, figure flattering, form fitting, and with non existent pockets. I also want to wear baggy clothes and cargo pants and still be considered professional.

Mark, you are gorgeous!! I so appreciate the nuance and authenticity of this conversation, especially around the 12:00 minute mark with the discussion of the queer community and clothing. I appreciate that Mark shares his view on it and even if it doesn’t “land” or he doesn’t speak about it in the way the community normally would, I like that he is trying and he is being true to himself. He is still a masculine cis straight man in this society and so his viewpoint comes from that place - and that’s what makes his clothing choices that much more interesting. I think he is uncomfortable with the assumption and misunderstanding of his sexuality, not the fact that it’s the queer community he is being lumped together with. No one likes to be misunderstood or misrepresented. I hope he sees though that the fact that he hasn’t received negative repercussions because he is upholding some semblance of “masculinity” (maybe that he isn’t one to be messed with, for example) is part of the societal problem and that folks who maybe don’t portray that masculinity are therefore still vulnerable.
And I love that StyleLikeU confronts him on this topic, uses inclusive language, etc. Just such a good interview all around, I love love love it ❤❤

I love this. Traditional western gender expression is not the end all be all. Many things we view as traditionally masculine or feminine is very specific to white Anglo-Saxon protestant views and beliefs. Indigenous cultures around the word have expressed gender in very different ways.

Now as a black woman you should know that’s not true. Most traditional eastern cultures have very binary gender norms that were there long before the introduction of European influence. I hate to see y’all so proudly misinformed.

Traditionally, while most indigenous cultures do recognize and practiced binary gender roles-those roles and the family structure do not mimic western norms. Studying the tribes of Omo Valley in Ethiopia I saw the practice of men adorning themselves with jewelry, making themselves, beautiful, and presenting themselves to the women so that they may attract a mate. Many forms of body modification such as scarification, face tattoos, lip plates, neck rings, etc are not viewed as feminine or particularly beautiful in the west-yet in many indigenous tribes these practices are seen as beauty enhancements. There are endless examples and resources that support my statement. I hope that you continue to research and broaden your perspective.✌🏾

In the almost 9 years of being non-binary, what i have learned is “gender expression does not equal gender identity” and that has been so freeing to me in what I feel comfortable wearing regardless of my gender and sexual orientation.
He likes to wear a skirt and heels, but he’s still a straight cis man, and he rocks the look in his own way. His smile and confidence makes him look really awesome and badass in his outfits.

This just fills me with joy! I love seeing folks wear whatever they want. It always felt so strange to me that it isn't broadly socially acceptable for men to wear dresses/skirts. Especially because men have a tendency to have smaller thighs (in general) and so there is less of a tendency for the uncomfortable upper thigh rub.

Men like this made the cost of size 13 heels come down tremendously after 35 yrs of having to spend $60 a pair through only one vendor. Being 6'1 very feminine woman who is just not a great tailor wore men's shirts many years. Now with neuromuscular disease only wear walking shoes and slacks...stable footing and protecting knees from scrapes , not getting cane tangled in a skirt. Really wish people would just accept the person, not the clothes.
My Grandmother put me into my first pair of high heels on my 13th birthday with the explanation that I was now a teenager and it was better to get used to them early. I worked in heels. I socialised in heels. I am five foot tall and late 50's and still love my heels so I can completely understand his feelings about them! Wear what the heck you want but do it with style and grace.

Me too! It felt like the interviewer didn’t fully grasp what he was saying and became unnecessarily hostile.

In most cultures men wear " skirts". Indonesia and bali they have sarong and izar, india they have a lungi, Scotland they have kilts, indigenous people as well. Theres a practicality to having fabric that covers but can be lifted esp when people are closer to nature in all they do including elimination and in places where there are no toilet systems...but thats a side note.

i have been watching StyleLikeU for years now and never have i heard the interviews "correcting" someone for what they said. even the description in the infobox it says "where he’s gone wrong with his language in the past. In real-time, he learns how to become a more effective ally" as if you hold the one and only truth that may not be questioned but also in your spoken word in the interview. the problem i have is not that you have a strong view, but that you are not sharing what you think would be the most helpful for everyone but reprehend mark for his "wrong" words. goes against everything that i love about this format.

Agree, straight females who wear pants or pantsuits aren’t required to define themselves in relation to the LGBTQIA community, so why should a straight male who wears skirts and heels? Nothing he says indicates he doesn’t respect the community or consider himself an ally. He simply says he’s not part of it. I would have preferred to listen to more of what he has to say than to what the interviewers wanted to say (or wanted him to say). It was kind of strange to hear a guest being “lectured”, as opposed to being able to share his viewpoint in his own way.
I would also appreciate if she didn't insert her words and thoughts into his mouth. Thank you for pointing this out.
Came here to say this. When someone is making the vulnerable choice to undress, in a room with people who will remain clothed, (to say nothing of being recorded), while revealing their thoughts and feelings, there is an inherent power imbalance. To conduct this interview as they did, did not maintain a psychologically safe space for the interviewee... and isn't that the whole point of these conversations? Asking the subject to take a huge risk (and to trust the interviewers that they will feel safe while doing so) to the benefit of all of us watching? If we create vulnerable spaces, and ask folks to trust us, then we have an obligation to do our best to shepherd them safely through that experience... not correct the interviewee, or make them see our POV during their journey. This felt like a violation of trust to me. Thank goodness he actually responds (and then reflects again at the end) quite humbly, while making sure his intentions were not again misunderstood. Glad this is the only interview I've seen them do like this, but definitely not the way I would want us to treat men who are boldly doing societal-shifting work, nor any human choosing to reveal their inner and outer selves.
*Super* valuable to realize who we owe gratitude to/ the price they paid for the freedoms we have now. Super valuable to excavate the reasons under our own potentially aversive reaction to being mis-identified with a certain group. And, my issue is that the way these two valuable ideas were presented seemed confrontational and non-supportive-of-continued-vulnerability to me... which is the only way these interviews can actually continue to be successful. *He* truly handled *their* mishandling of him so well... while he was undressed. Hope the interviewers can take in some of this feedback. They normally do a great job of creating supportive safety for their guests; I hope they'll take accountability with him, and go back to the care we are used to expecting from them. @@user-nz7ti9ch9p

I’m a 56 year old heterosexual woman and I think he looks amazing. I’ve never assumed anything as it relates to others sexuality. I think clothes are just fabric to cover our bodies and don’t have anything to do with who we are. Wear whatever you like and feel as fabulous as you are.

I suggest people research ancient tribal clothes from Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. Masculine men wore elaborate feathers, wore large hooped earings, sarong dresses and makeup. They would resemble what modern society thinks is ‘feminine’ but they were hyper macho. To them clothes was about conveying power. To me it makes sense high heels conveys ‘power’, and empowerment.

Pants are oppressive and restricting for me. I have always preferred skirts, wraps and dresses. I feel more confident (read myself) in them. I have stopped wearing them since I moved from working in the arts to working in the mining industry. Pants are safer in an industrial setting mostly from being fear of being rejected in that community rather than being caught in the jaws of some massive machine. I am grateful for this story you have all shared. It has planted a bit of courage in me today.❤

I respect that he doesnt think he is a woman simply because he loves clothing associated with women. Also I have to disagree with the lady interjecting him and disregarding his comments. He isn't connected to the trans community in the sense that she was trying to forcefully explaining. It was disrespectful and completely disregarded his point. He did not discredit anyone nor offend anyone; in fact, his act just shows that a boy wanting to dress in an address isn't a girl in a boy's body, and thinking this way is what perpetuates sexist stereotypes. Ironically, the political statement the women is talking about isn't the political statement he is making.

It is wild that at 11:45, you interjected meanwhile you recently uploaded a long-ass video of a man detailing all the ways he's fucked over women unchecked.
This had terrible leading interviewing skills; he wasn't even going in on anyone. This whole men's series is generally hit-and-miss. You can tell you made him uncomfortable, frankly unnecessarily, when around 14:00, he stumbles through an apology for something he didn't even necessarily do. It feels a little mal-assumptive and even a little ageist to jump down an older man's throat but leave younger men unchecked, assuming good intent.

This is supposed to be a safe space for him to express himself in HIS words without being criticised. I can look past the previous misguided comments he's made because he presents another challenge to enduring norms around clothing. I bristle at the notion of anyone not having a (air quotes) feminine part of themselves I just think his presentation modulates all aspects of himself in ways that work for him and that is cool! I wish people wouldn't look at someone they've just met and assert their sexuality whether that person actually might be cis and entirely heteronormative otherwise or not.
I hear you try to walk him to the point of not cleaving a distinction between the nature/impact of the kind of personal self expression he is making but (and I think this is the heteronormativity rearing its head) but it being about *just* clothes for him is a reflection of his own privilege. His being able to "risk" his presentation in the workplace is an AFFORDANCE and I don't think he's quite getting it.

Yes. Like, imagine asserting your white male privilege so far as to want the same rights as marginalized people have and are fighting for, but in the same breath not wanting to be viewed as or mistakenly associated with those marginalized folks. Smh 🤦🏾♀️

This absolutely *and* I also see his logic, given the I think safe assumption of how he was raised as a cis straight man, it makes sense that his own point of reference is to not align completely because it allows for a perception from the onlooker against what he’s trying to portray. And I love that style like u did a good job of introducing the privilege and duty of allyship he’s responsible for as a straight man in a skirt and stilettos.
All in all, so interesting and I think hes heading toward the right place. I hope more conversations about this gives him space to understand the break down of how he feels and the responsibility his clothing choices politically hold.

You look bloody fantastic! And you coach girls? You are a very classy man. Some of the world's most "masculine" men wear kilts. There is guy who drywalls in a kilt. And over the centuries and years, skirts as well as other what we now call and see as feminine style and apparel were regularly utilized by men. Speaking as a gender fluid woman,
I think of what you said about liking how the woman looked in hills and felt confident. So why are we programmed to keep ourselves separate from what we admire in another rather than integrate that? I have worn hills. I am not the biggest fan of them on me personally, but I LOVE to wear boots! For this same reason, that they make me feel confident.

I mean clothes have no sexuality or gender, that's society constantly putting labels on things when people should just be whatever they want. Not hurting anyone else. Also European men used to wear heels for a long time.

I started wearing kits and heels in Sydney Aust in 1969. Now aged 69 I am still wearing the same only difference is I transitioned years ago. My oldest sister uses my name I chose. Never happier . Fate neh

As a woman who wears traditionally male clothing a lot (the jeans fit better) and raising a daughter who I never force into tutus, pinks, and unicorns, I receive so many questions about what gender I’m raising my child or why she’s in boy clothes or people misgendering her. And I always say it has nothing to do with gender or sexuality, clothes are clothes and we wear what we like. Not to dismiss LGBTQ+, but fighting against patriarchy and gender roles is a fight for all of us.
