I had purchased a pair of Audeze MM100 last spring and had them paid off but I got tired of all the delays and so I was going to cancel the order until I found an 660S2 as an open box unit for the same $400 price. I now own the 600, 6XX and 660S2 and the S2 is my favorite of the 600 series. By a wide margin. I enjoy the added kick in the pants out of the bass performance as well as the extended upper frequencies. My 62 year old ears really appreciate the added sizzle and clarity up top. My modest system consist of a Burson Conductor 3 Performance Combo on the solid state and a 1st Generation Woo Audio WA-6 on the tubes and these beauties sound just excellent to my ears.
I got some this year. They totally invalidated my Focal clears and HD800S. Sold them both. The HD800S are overrated. While the HD800S have more "space", the 660s2 have everything else, and better bass. The 660s2 scaled up with better dacs and amps. They have all the strengths of my old HD600, but with much improved bandwidth. They come across as about as natural and neutral as necessary.. Very articulate and detailed and all-day listenable. They also made me notice how some headphones really lack bass in order to sound "cleaner" or more detailed. These are balanced and have accurate bass. Don't let anyone even dream that these have a veil, they absolutely do not. They are my go-to primary headphones.
Very interesting! I got a pair of HD660S2 myself and I have to agree, but only have a Fiio K5 to run them. What amp/dac do you use to get the best out of your HD660S2 ?
Had to watch this again. I sold my 660s2 and ever since then I’ve been through a lot of headphones and IEMs. Searching for something. Well just pulled the trigger and gotta say I found what I’ve been looking for. Thanks for bringing me back
Dave❤please don't miss understand the heart😂 but seriously, this is the only 660s2 review anyone interested should see.Period. Every word you said is 100% correct. Specially about coherency, bottom to top, tottaly ballanced sound. I gave them a listen in our local store on Sennheiser 820 dac/amp through both 6,35 and 4,4 pentacon cables Ballanced is an absolute must for 660s2 as it brings the last % of detail . In a way it reminds me a lot of my beloved 650 but better ,enough so that I am finally selling 650 and bying 660s2. Thanx a lot and you are always 100% spot on the sound reviewsGood ears and good knowledge of real music Dave. Regards from Finland
If you like unrealistic timbre and poor imaging, then get the nano@@ALDIA365. However, The nano has a wider soundstage and taller image, however it lacks depth and precision to its imaging. The details are otherwise very good on nano. The 660s2 is simply the most realistic sounding headphone I have ever heard. You feel the emotion conveyed during the recording. The imaging is also pin point. I felt disconnected from my music with ananda nano. The emotion wasn't reaching me. It felt very dry and bright, unpleasant, unsoulful
You are my favorite audio reviewer! I completely agree with your thoughts! Very few people talk about the excellent imaging and the detail and clarity of the 660s2. I don't know why DMS says the details are about the same on 660s2 and 650/6XX. To me the 660s2 seems more detailed and extended, as well as being clearer.
Thank you for the kind words. Thank you for the impressions. Glad you enjoy the 660s2. Detail - Reproduced images of the original sound. Definition/Focus/Resolution - Quality of a reproduced detail that is clearly defined with sharp, edged images. Enables the listener to distinguish between and/or follow the melodic lines of the individual voices and/or instruments
Thank you for this video. I recently got into audio, and this video helped me with my purchasing decisions, especially since they are on sale right now. Very informative without coming across as a sales pitch. Do you have a DAC and amp combo that will work great with S2s? I have a $2000 budget and I'm willing to spend all of it, but I also like a bang for my buck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm glad you enjoy the channel content and find it helpful. DAC/Amp that I use as my reference the Mytek Liberty DAC ii. Another option that I truly love is the Fiio K19.
To all people Want to buy HD6 line Headphones , JUST SEE his Reviews its SPOT ON.. i have all hd6 line and what he said is exactly what u get with honestly and not sponsored or 2-4 hours listening and then review.
I've just got my new hd660S2 for $400. I really recomend it they blow up my mind when I listent to with my cheap tube amp.I can only imagine when I upgrade my amp.
Wife had been on the lookout for her HD599 replacement for the longest time and when she had the chance to audition this she was floored and ordered immediately. I must admit it does sound better than my HD6XX in each and every way.
I am also using HD599 now and want an upgrade, I haven't ordered S2 yet cuz I heard its clamp force is much higher than 599 so not sure if it would be comfortable. As you have both now, could you please us know how the comfort is compared to 599....Thank you
@@sorcerermax5111 you are right, the clamp force is indeed a fair bit tighter. It took her a couple of weeks to loosen it, that is, stretch it before every use and after about an hour of listening stretch it again. It’s now more snug than tight.
@@colddish I bought it man. Not 660S2 though, I wanted to buy that first as it comes with a balanced cable in the box but I can't stand high clamp force so bought AKG K712 Pro instead. It should be here any moment now. Let's see how it goes. Thank you
@@colddish Got AKG K712 Pro and used it for an hour now. Definitely has a big soundstage and lot of details in the background that u might not have heard before with Sennheiser's and such but! something is missing. Timbre is also natural just like my HD599SE(surprised) but with a bigger soundstage, better bass depth, tighter bass, more space between instruments but I guess I expected them to be more. I still wanna try 660S2 but I can't take its clamp force. If they make headphones as confrontable as HD 599SE, then I am interested in them
I rarely even use headphones and I've yet to come across anything that makes me have any interest in upgrading from my HD 600. Thanks for the thorough review Dave, I appreciate your work.
@@ThisIsNotJP So what is your verdict on the 660s2 compared to your 6xx? I also just got the 6xx but not sure how I like it compared to the 660s2. You think I should return it and get the 660s2?
Glad i came upon this review. I purchased this set as my 1st high end headset because a friend recommended them and they were on sale for Black Friday lol. Seen a few reviews that made me second guess myself. A few of the comments also made me glad i did purchase these. Now my problem is finding a dac amp to run them 😅
Had a pair of the old marble effect HD600 since late 2020 and may make the upgrade to the 660S2 soon or for christmas. I add extra bass and high EQ on my behringer mixer so I guess I get quite a nice full sound, and I think the clarity has been unmatched in the price point for a while
Thank you, i definitely get HD 660s2 for my ZEN DAC 3 instead HD 600, even if price is 470euros vs 300 euros. And of course HD 660s2 comes with balanced cable, which is best for my DAC.
Thanks. The fact I'm considering buying a £400 pair of headphones must mean I'm in a fortunate position. I remember when buying a £40 pair was a big deal to me.
Great and interesting review. I’ll stick with my 650’s …and seeing that I just got the LCDX (2021 package) …I’m sorta seeing the extremes in what’s presented to my ears . Take care☕️🍩
The 660S2 are the best of the 600 line, full stop. The others resemble the 660s2, but are less capable. They have less treble, less bass, or both. If you prefer your audio with LESS and love "fidelity by omitting frequencies". then buy something else. There is no grain, and they have better bass than my 800S do on any quality amp/DAC combo. The 800S are a waste of cash, except for "space"
Mhhmmm this is interesting info. HD650 is my favorite headphone out of everything I've heard over nearly 20 years, had the 660S too, liked it quite a bit but after the initial wow wore off, I ended up again using just 650. Ordered the 660S2 today, to see if the hype is real or not :)
@@TheHonestAudiophile Dave I always watch your channel but it always sobers me up about any product I'm looking to buy. Your "Luke Warm" feeling is probably most reviewers A-tier products.
Hi again , you can fit the custom cans bass mid to your hd600 it really works in the lower bass, I fitted to my 6xx and the bass is similar to the660s2, I recommend this mid kit and around £30
I bought HD 660S2 recently after also trying HD 600 and 650 as well. To begin with, I was very impressed with the 600 when playing orchestral music, more than 650. I listened to Beyer DT 1990, Audeze LCD-X, Neumann NDH 30 and maybe some others. All sounding good, but none perfect for every nuance in the test songs. Blindly then ordering the newest HD 6-series home as it wasn't available on shelf. I'm quite satisfied with the sound of the 660. They sound clean and balanced when I play BBCSO, Performance Samples or Cinesamples virtual instruments that have been recorded and sampled quite deeply. You can clearly hear the differences in the timbre of each woodwind, string or brass instrument when varying microphone position settings in the concert hall. You can hear the dynamics of instruments raising very evenly when turning the mod wheel on keyboard. I have been a little confused why there are so many people bashing these models, even though the introduction price was quite highish, sure. So far I haven't noticed weird spikes in some frequencies of high pitched instruments. I try to compare the headphones with Genelec monitors.
I use HD600 for vocals, HD650 for old bad quality tracks, HD660s for Games and movies( to me the biggest Soundstage ) and HD660s2 that just bought them looks like they are HD660s with more low bass , also amazing imaging , separation, .... I have to agree HD660s do sound thin some times i dont know why. PS I need time to understand the low end of 660s2 , it feels like a different HD6 line headphone :)
@@KryssN1 vocals are on background for sure, about games they have a bit bigger soundstage nothing special but imaging on 660s and S2 is amazing pin point direction is amazing. In my opinion vocals are better on 600, 650 are better on harsh music like rock for example , 660s are fast but not smooth like the others more livenes. And S2 are like 660 but more low end and smoother treble. If u need big soundstage take something like 712 akg or Sundara . If u need good imaging then 660s are both really good.
6X0 line is a hard one. Many people are stuck on their favorite, so you almost have to be bold to come out and say “this is better,” because people take it personally! On another note, is the FT3 on your radar for review? I have one and I think it’s definitely deserving of greater exposure, polarizing visual design aside. I think it challenges the 6X0 line. It’s maybe not quite as close to reference, but I think the sound signature would appeal to many, with pretty good technical capabilities as well. FT3 is a really well-rounded headphone to my ears.
You’re right about offending people’s favorites by buzzing about the “new kid on the block,” but that is sad because newcomers to the hobby/recreation who have the unindoctrinated option and liberty to get any model do not get the most accurate and objective viewpoint to make an informed, good decision.
Hi great video, shame it didn’t come in that posh box, ok with the 1.8m(6ft) lead but for me the 3m lead is ideal as it’s ok from r my listening room . Regards mark
Greetings from Australia - I have the FiiO M17 DAP/DAC and own the Focal Bathys / Focal Celestee and yesterday ordered the Sennheiser HD650S2 which was reduced from AU$949 to AU$749 as this will be my first pair of open backs for many years and the first from Sennheiser and will receive these today. Alternatively could have purchased the Focal Clear MG or Focal Clear Pro for both but still priced around $AU2,100. It appears Sennheiser dropped the case for a bag probably to save money but I would take these with me so the bag is more suitable.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Received the Sennheiser HD660S2 however was shocked at the minimalist packaging for this price range - the box is devoid of any specifications or product information, the bag included (no case) is el-cheapo and has no branding (seems like an afterthought) and none of the usual Sennheiser authenticity verification stickers and the only logo is “Hi-Res Audio” which means nothing without the expensive and required external hardware to power these and their impedance is also not listed. The audio cables seem very soft and too flexible (previous version were thick and coiled), however they appear to be gold plated. The headphones themselves are well made however too much plastic and cheap foam on top which over time will degrade. The earpads unlike the Focal are not leather and dust magnets. Focal on the other hand are higher quality build wise and almost all of it is leather / magnesium / aluminium plus a quality carrying case is included and the Focal are only rated at 40 ohm, not 200 ohm. As for audio used my Fiio M17 DAC / DAP and tried both the 4.5mm and 6.5mm headphone jacks and bear in mind this M17 cost me AU$2,200 but it appears more amplification is required when using the 6.5mm jack instead of 4.5mm, but in theory there should be no difference. I still have to increase the volume to 80 to make it sufficient and I do believe being open backs higher volumes are required in an attempt to block out surrounding noise in non-quiet environments. Maybe its me and I use Tidal (including downloaded hi-res albums on the FiiO M17 locally) for most of my music but very hard to find ultra high quality 88khz or higher music on these services, so currently unable to test these to their full potential as most audio on these services are CD quality aka 44khz only. Obviously this not Sennheiser’s fault.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Im also baffled if if its worth having high impedance headphones that require more power to drive if in the end the lower impedance sound as good if not better - where’s the benefit? I am also not sure if any difference with audio if using the smaller 4mm or larger 6.5mm connector for the headphones - I do believe it’s simply a connection choice with no audio difference. I am glad I purchased the FiiO M17 despite its AU$2,200 price tag as it can power virtually all headphones and has most connector types (excluding XLR as this would make it even larger and heavier - NOTE: New Fiio M27 coming out later in the year to top this one), even 200ohm or higher, but volume levels need to be increased if not in a quiet environment. So beyond the higher impedance I don’t believe the audio sounds any better than lower impedance headphones. If anyone can suggest any test tracks to see how well these perform, then I will give this a spin with the Sennheiser HD660S2, but it appears Focal have the better build quality, larger drivers but that yet are closed back. Tempted to purchase a pair of Focal Clear MG / Focal Clear MG Pro’s (sequels to the original Focal Clear which is currently reduced to AU$1,499 as no longer being made) open backs while reduced to around AU$2,000 so I can compare with Sennheiser HD650S2 and I suspect they will blow Sennheiser out of the water due to their superior build, larger drivers etc, and only rated 55 ohm impedance as well so easy to drive.
@SpeedfrkOne this is a listening test I put together. I know it's more about listening loud but it should show differences in impedance loads as well. www.thehonestaudiophile.com/post/how-loud-is-too-loud-does-it-sound-better-an-honest-audiophile-listening-level-challenge As for the differences between single ended and balanced the output power will help to enhance the experience of headphones and IEM that need the additional current, the differences will mostly be noticed in deeper bass, more controlled treble and more refined, focused resolution.
Hello, I'm pretty new to the whole audiophile thingy, I looked through a lot of stuff over the last days and I'm now set on the HD660S2 and power them through a Fiio K7 Dac/Amp. Just from my research this combo should work fine, but do I need any cables or converters that are not included in those boxes? Would be great if you could help 👍
Different presentations but not completely different. If you want a big stage, more details and resolution but not as natural then the Arya Stealth. The 660s2 has a smaller stage, little less resolution but more natural tone and timbre. I love both and use each one regularly.
HD660S2 - even how bad the recording is it will still present it as pleasant as possible but soundstage could be improved. EditionXS - you will never determine a bad recording because it will flood you with bass which sometimes annoying. DT1990pro - a bad recording will be 2x bad recording, lol! this is not for relaxed listening because it is designed to elevate issues on a record.
Every way you've described these cans is exactly what I'd want in an iem, and while I do prefer in-ears over headphones I wouldn't dare say "no" to these if given a chance.

Since we're on the topic of iems, how would they compare to the XENNS Mangird Top? I think you enjoyed them a lot and they are similar in price to the 660s2.@@TheHonestAudiophile
Hello, I am completely new to the audiophile scene. I usually listen to jazz and classic rock (Beatles, CCR, Eagles and stuff) and would like to know which Sennheiser (660s2, 600 or 650) would be better suited for such type of music? I currently use Shure 215 and Bose QC35ii if that helps. Thank you.
I like them for metal and rock music. They're not basshead headphones though. As for listening to music in general I find them to great, especially for my preferred genres of jazz, classical, acoustical and rock. They are very good for the studio as a mixing and mastering headphone, not as a monitor.
I’ve found that I always end up feeling the same way about audio gear you do lol. Great video. If you don’t mind me asking, in terms of enjoyment, do you feel the GSX-Mini would offer me anything if I already have the Liberty HPA?
It is great to hear that 660S2 has better sound stage, comparing with the previous HD 650/600 headphones. Just out of curiosity, does the HD 660S2 sound stage still have the 3-blob effect like HD 650/600? What I mean by 3-blob effect is most obvious when listening to human singing with background music. The human voice is very forward in your face, forming a very distinctive center image, while the background music sits very back, forming 2 very left/right images. They are so separated that you are listening to 3 separated blobs/sources, instead of a cohesive sphere. It is quite a unique character on only HD 650/600 that I never found on any other reference headphones.
I am thinking of using my 660S2 with my Fiio KA13 Balanced on high gain , Fiio says its 550mw are these enough in your opinion ? If not is there any other portable solution that works better ?
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thanks for answering, I guess if KA15 is very good with 560mw on desktop balanced so the KA13 on desktop balanced 550mw is ?Also the same Amp Chip ?
i love your reviews a loooot. I have two questions, will I be doing myself a huge disservice if i ran them balanced but from a dongle (ibasso dc04 pro)? Also, can you compare the soundstage (from memory) to the fidelio x2 both in width and depth. I'm a soundstage sucker and if i opt for the hd600S2, i won't be happy if it has a smaller soundstage than the fidelio X2 (that's the only open headphones i have had)
I recommend using a desktop amp for the 660s2. I've not heard the iBasso DC04 Pro. I've not heard the X2 but I've heard the X2HR. Honestly I don't recall enough about them to compare fairly. I'm considering getting these in the coming months. Would a Fiio K11 be enough to drive these? Or should I consider something else? I don't want to go beyond 200$.
@@TheHonestAudiophile would be cool if you could do a compilation of "what headphones/iem I would buy at these budgets" ala josh valour style, would be very cool
Very good comparison. S5X are wider and have more space then then 660s2. The 660s2 sounds slightly warmer but more natural in tone and timbre. The S5X are brighter and more energetic in the uppers. Detail retrieval and resolution are very similar. It all comes down the stage presentation and the slightly more elevated uppers of the S5X. The S5X is more like a Dolby Atmos presentation and the 660s2 is more like a natural studio stage to my ears. They compliment each other well in my opinion.
I see that the HD600 and 660 are still the headphones you recommend on your latest videos. Have you had 2nd thoughts about the 660s2? I think I prefer the clearer sound of the 600
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you. But on your TH-cam page, you are still recommending the hd 660 and not the 660s2. You are also still recommending the HD 600. I would agree with that choice, I think that’s the best out of the bunch.
The template that the recommendations come from has been updated to reflect the HD660s2. I still think the HD660 is a good headphone but the HD660s2 is an improvement as I mentioned in the video. I am glad you enjoy the HD600 as do I. Thank you for the comments. Have a great day.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you so much!!! I was able to listen to the 660s2 (previously owned the 660s) and although better than the 660s I still find them to be lacking in the low end and are missing deep emotional sound. I know that nothing can sound like my HD6 headphones so i want something close to 100 euros that would be just acceptable for you. Thanks...
The XS are very different to the 660s2. I have both, I prefer the XS, they are more exciting and impressive, but I still regularly listen to the Sennies. Both great headphones.
I currently have both here for testing and the Xs are on a whole different level when it comes to resolution, detail, soundstage and such. It feels like the next step up after the 660S2, which is crazy considering the Xs is half the price
Good question. A slightly different presentation as the S5X is tuned for Dolby Atmos reproduction. The to e and timbre is close but the S5X may be slightly leaner. Stage is the big difference as the S5X is wide, expansive and deep. The S5X may be a tad more accurate in placement. Detail retrieval and resolution are similar. These two compliment each other in a lot of ways.
@@TheHonestAudiophile I have both 6xx and 660S2, the 6xx is more airy (a bit grainy tho) due to having more treble. The HD660S2 is about 20% better overall but I miss the airiness of 6xx sometimes

I haven't heard the HD700 iin a very long time. But the original was better than the HD700 and I believe the HD660s2 is an improvement over the original so yes, the HD660s2 is better than the HD700. Here is a link to my HD700 review from 5 years ago: th-cam.com/video/6G-KJvkYcDw/w-d-xo.html
you didn't compare them to the hd 650/6xx. what's your verdict on that one? i am currently using the hd 600 but will probably send it back. i can't listen to it for too long at loud volumes. it's too shouty or too bright (hard to explain, i think it's the 5k hz peak). now i've ordered the hd 6xx and i hope it will be better. i was also thinking of buying the hd 660s2 but it's double the price. probably not worth it. when i asked on a discord server "in ear fidelity" (it's from crinnacle) almost everyone told me the hd 660s2 sucks and hd 600/650 are superior.. opinions can be so different on that topic. damn.
I don't have a HD650 to compare direct. I did compare to the HD600: 13:48 VS HD600 Here is a link to my HD650 review from several years ago: th-cam.com/video/33Cs2fyWmZ0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2QmJxXXMZmU_FwvP
I've not heard the 560s since I reviewed them: th-cam.com/video/c7oNedFqXJQ/w-d-xo.html If memory serves me correctly, the 560s is way brighter, more forward in the mids, not as natural tone and timbre and less detailed and resolving. But I don't have them to do a side by side comparison so going off memory.
I disagree. I put a huge emphasis on midrange as it is the majority of what we hear. But the 600 is too forward and elevated in the mids and doesn't have balance and cohesion throughout the mix reproduction.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Although my tube-rolled Darkvoice helps a great deal with that. More "holographic" or "reliëf" in the sound, brings up the bass quite a bit. You will have listened to the 660S2 on your Tor Roger. Is it a similar improvement as on the HD600? Thanks for the review!
Underperforming is an understatement. Thanks for your honesty. I bought these headphones based on youtube reviews. These headphones are not good. I had some 1970's sennheisers in the 70's, and they were good. I like crisp definition and punch. These phones are soft and spungy. NOT GOOD!! These are garbage. What are you youtubers doing?? WTF??
I disagree, with the punch and slam part, these headphones feel very compressed also not the best extension. Even the 650 comes close if not beats it in extension and punch. I think the overall presentation of the mids and treble is grainy and lacking neutrality, very much a departure from the natural timbre the 6x0 series has come known for (580, 600, 650). The upper mids feel congested and recessed leading to rather hollow sounding vocals. There's also a peaking notch in the middle treble done in a strange way which adds some uneasiness to the presentation. It's basically what I think of the 660s just warmer. The most offensive thing is the price tag. If it was more in line with the 6x0 series pricing then it might be a good option for people if they want this sound. But this performance for $600 is unacceptable. But anyhow you're entitled to your opinion and this is mine. Personally I dont think I'd pay even 30 bucks for them. Maybe I would for the pads and grille though
I've listened to 600, 650 and 660s2 for a long time, changing from one to another and although 650 are close timbre vise, they clearly are not as fast and detailed, separation is lacking considerably and they do sound muddy and more veiled, than the 660s2. 600 is not even close in all regards, not a fair comparison tbh.
The 660s2 vs hd600 is big win for hd600. The 660s2 has no extension in bass or treble its boomier and just sharper with more fatiguing highs and less tight bass. The hd600 is very source dependant, on a mediocre source it will sound bland and boring. The 660s2 is far more forgiving because of conciderable lower resolution.
I've owned a HD600 for 4 years. First Impressions th-cam.com/video/rXy0weTufpA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Tkdj478L7861a1GA Review th-cam.com/video/csNw-ot8nGE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sGI7j99nYUjYbaIy
Totally disagree. The budget options of Sennheiser are mostly predictable. The 660s2 is a different beast. Yes the plastic is not premium like other brands.
Seriously though, I do believe the 660s2 is a reference headphone that has excellent capabilities. As I stated in the video it is the most neutral and natural headphone of the 6xx line. Do I think there are better options available? Probably so but I've not heard everything so there is that to consider. I do think very highly of the 660s2. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.
Got it backwards there! If you're hearing impaired, you won't hear the audible attributes of more revealing headphones that you would if you had better or normal hearing. This is obviously all dependent on what amp and dac they are powered with as someone may be driving them off a cheap AVR jack and the other commenter is using a high quality headphone amplifier and a R2R DAC...lol. Kinda like the guy who said the Hifiman Sundaras suck and he was using his laptop jack with no external DAC or Amp 😂 They have the same headphones but are not even close when the source equipment is disclosed. I switch between an RME ADI-2 Dac with a Monolith THX amp for xlr balanced (head-fi stack) or my Gustard R26 R2R Dac and a Schiit headphone amp (main system Dac). Just these 2 options sound much different on each headphone/source combination. Great headphone systems are not as inexpensive, but great IEM'S can be powered with less, and many excellent ones are quite inexpensive ❤
Awesomeness! Glad you enjoy the 660s2. Thank you for the impressions.
Awesome 👍 Glad you enjoy the 660s2. Thanks for the impressions.
Very interesting! I got a pair of HD660S2 myself and I have to agree, but only have a Fiio K5 to run them. What amp/dac do you use to get the best out of your HD660S2 ?
What made you prefer them over the Clears?
Mytek Liberty DAC ii is my reference

Every word you said is 100% correct.
Specially about coherency, bottom to top, tottaly ballanced sound.
I gave them a listen in our local store on Sennheiser 820 dac/amp through both 6,35 and 4,4 pentacon cables Ballanced is an absolute must for 660s2 as it brings the last % of detail .
In a way it reminds me a lot of my beloved 650 but better ,enough so that I am finally selling 650 and bying 660s2.

Ananda Nano?
If you like unrealistic timbre and poor imaging, then get the nano@@ALDIA365. However,
The nano has a wider soundstage and taller image, however it lacks depth and precision to its imaging.

Wife had been on the lookout for her HD599 replacement for the longest time and when she had the chance to audition this she was floored and ordered immediately. I must admit it does sound better than my HD6XX in each and every way.
Awesome 👍 Glad you and your wife enjoy the 660s2.

Thanks Dave, interesting review. I didn't realize these are still Irish made. That revised hd600 is Romanian iirc.
Awesome 👍
The 660S2 are the best of the 600 line, full stop. The others resemble the 660s2, but are less capable. They have less treble, less bass, or both. If you prefer your audio with LESS and love "fidelity by omitting frequencies". then buy something else. There is no grain, and they have better bass than my 800S do on any quality amp/DAC combo. The 800S are a waste of cash, except for "space"
Glad you enjoy the 660s2. Thanks for the thoughts and comparison.

Awesome 👍 Thanks for the impressions
Hi Dave
How do these compare to the hifiman ananda stealth magnet headphones? thank you for another great video
Sorry haven't heard Ananda Stealth.
I'm probabbly gonna get a pair when it goes on sale for black friday or something. I own a HD800s and HD6xx so
Awesome 👍
I use HD600 for vocals, HD650 for old bad quality tracks, HD660s for Games and movies( to me the biggest Soundstage ) and HD660s2 that just bought them looks like they are HD660s with more low bass , also amazing imaging , separation, .... I have to agree HD660s do sound thin some times i dont know why. PS I need time to understand the low end of 660s2 , it feels like a different HD6 line headphone :)
How do you find 660S2 for games and timber of them?
Does the vocal comes forward or is it more in the background when compared to 650?
I've been trying to get an FT3 in for review for a long time but it is alluding me.
Thanks for the thoughts, much appreciated.

You’re right about offending people’s favorites by buzzing about the “new kid on the block,” but that is sad because newcomers to the hobby/recreation who have the unindoctrinated option and liberty to get any model do not get the most accurate and objective viewpoint to make an informed, good decision.

GM ☕️…listening ..
Look forward to hearing your impressions of the 660s2.
@SpeedfrkOne Thanks for the first impressions.
I know it's more about listening loud but it should show differences in impedance loads as well.
www.thehonestaudiophile.com/post/how-loud-is-too-loud-does-it-sound-better-an-honest-audiophile-listening-level-challenge
As for the differences between single ended and balanced the output power will help to enhance the experience of headphones and IEM that need the additional current, the differences will mostly be noticed in deeper bass, more controlled treble and more refined, focused resolution.
Hey great review. Would the hd660s2 pair well with the original shiit jotumheim? Especially with a custom 4 pin xlr cable.

The K7 should come with USB cable to connect to your computer and the HD660S2 will come with cables to connect to the K7.
Thank for the video Dave,Im not sure which one to get: HD 660S2 or Hifiman Arya Stealths ...
Different presentations but not completely different. If you want a big stage, more details and resolution but not as natural then the Arya Stealth. The 660s2 has a smaller stage, little less resolution but more natural tone and timbre. I love both and use each one regularly.

I don't think the 66s2 has 3 blob effect or near as strong center image like 600/650.
nope, i have hd650, compared to 660s2, it doesn't have 3 blob effect
beside music its amazing for 3d sound in games by default

Hi Dave, what would you recommend someone (headphones) with a budget of 300 dollars who seeks the widest soundtstage?
Audio-Technica R70x
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you Dave

@@TheHonestAudiophile would be cool if you could do a compilation of "what headphones/iem I would buy at these budgets" ala josh valour style, would be very cool

Hello, thanks for the review. Very helpful! Its better than the DT1990 PRO? I hesitate between the two
I've only heard the DT1990 Pro once and don't recall enough to give a comparison. Sorry.
im a bit late but oh my god dont get the dt 1990 pro. these are 10000 times better
Thanks , compared to the S5X??
Very good comparison. S5X are wider and have more space then then 660s2. The 660s2 sounds slightly warmer but more natural in tone and timbre. The S5X are brighter and more energetic in the uppers. Detail retrieval and resolution are very similar. It all comes down the stage presentation and the slightly more elevated uppers of the S5X. The S5X is more like a Dolby Atmos presentation and the 660s2 is more like a natural studio stage to my ears. They compliment each other well in my opinion.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thanks , appreciated.

How do these compare to the Dt 1990 Pros? I’m looking for something new.
Sorry, I haven't heard the DT 1990 Pro.
I see that the HD600 and 660 are still the headphones you recommend on your latest videos. Have you had 2nd thoughts about the 660s2? I think I prefer the clearer sound of the 600
I don't own the og HD660, I sold it as the HD660s2 is better as described in my review.
How does it compare to the Meze 109 Pro, I’m considering both but can only choose 1.
660s2 is more natural and neutral. The 109 Pro is more fun but also has a brighter midrange that can be a tad fatiguing over time.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you so much!!! I was able to listen to the 660s2 (previously owned the 660s) and although better than the 660s I still find them to be lacking in the low end and are missing deep emotional sound. I’m looking for a set that sounds like a good set of speakers (I own the B&W 705s2 bookshelf’s) with deep emotional base (not bloated), detailed sound and a natural balance to the mids and highs. Do you have a recommendation? Do the 109’s fit the bill? Trying to keep my budget under 1k

@@marks5966in my opinion you will not get with 109 pro what you r looking for. 109 pro is a good quality V shape sound. I finally found lush and full sound with Audeze LCD 2c. They have amazing deep sound signature. THA on this channel didnt like them but I had a chance to test them and bought them few weeks ago. Currently they killed all my other headphones and iems, listening mainy them. So sound is very personal. Suggest trying, maybe LCD is also what you need ;).
I know one is more reference, the other more fun.. But, if you had to choose one for daily use, this or the 109 Pro?
660s2
@@TheHonestAudiophile Really. I thought for sure you were gonna go in the opposite direction lol. You seemed to really like the 109. What do you prefer about the S2? I can't decide which to get. They both get a lot of love.
@markhogquist2000 660s2 is more natural and neutral. The 109 Pro is more fun but also has a brighter midrange that can be a tad fatiguing over time.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Lastly, which would you prefer for rock and metal exclusively? Thanks for the input Dave 👍
I'd go with the 660s2 as it fits my preference more even though the 109 Pro is a bit more fun.
Are these better than Dan Clark Aeon Noire 2? Thanks
Sorry haven't heard the DCA Noire 2
Hey , i want your help, I am using HD6 line for years but i want something that is closed back and isolates external sounds for use 1 hour on games only ( i have kids so a lot of exterior sounds :) ) . I know that nothing can sound like my HD6 headphones so i want something close to 100 euros that would be just acceptable for you. Thanks...

Rode NTH-100
Sennheiser HD280 Pro
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank u , what has better external isolation of these 3 ?
Sennheiser HD280 Pro and Rode NTH-100 are very similar and better than the others.
@@TheHonestAudiophile great thank u so much, last question between 280 and rode what is more comfortable for u ?
@Tripokaridos22 I find both comfortable but the Rode gets the edge.
They moved the production to Ireland to give the buyer less 😐. I own the 660S made in my country, Romania. ❤
Are they better than the Hifiman Edition XS?
Sorry haven't heard the Edition XS
The XS are very different to the 660s2. I have both, I prefer the XS, they are more exciting and impressive, but I still regularly listen to the Sennies. Both great headphones.
I currently have both here for testing and the Xs are on a whole different level when it comes to resolution, detail, soundstage and such. It feels like the next step up after the 660S2, which is crazy considering the Xs is half the price
Better than the ollo s5x?
Good question. A slightly different presentation as the S5X is tuned for Dolby Atmos reproduction. The to e and timbre is close but the S5X may be slightly leaner. Stage is the big difference as the S5X is wide, expansive and deep. The S5X may be a tad more accurate in placement. Detail retrieval and resolution are similar. These two compliment each other in a lot of ways.
So better than theThieaudio Ghost?
Yes
Is that dip in the treble that audible?
If it was I would've mentioned it during the review. I don't find the treble dip to be troublesome.
@@TheHonestAudiophile I have both 6xx and 660S2, the 6xx is more airy (a bit grainy tho) due to having more treble. The HD660S2 is about 20% better overall but I miss the airiness of 6xx sometimes
@khajitt thanks for the impressions, glad you enjoy the 660s2.

@@TheHonestAudiophile What is your rank on HD 6 line ? to me is 660s2>600>660s>650
660s2, 660, 600, 650 but I won't disagree that the 600/660 could be flipped.
@@TheHonestAudiophile We have exactly the same opinion. I have been listening 660s, s2 and 600 side by side ... Am i crazy ? 660s1 sound brighter to me ???
660s do have moments of brightness that aren't as resolved so they're more noticeable. Depends on the amp and the track in my experience.
Is it better than hd700?
I did compare to the HD600:
13:48 VS HD600

I dont like that Sennheiser Didnt Paint the Silver Behind of the driver to Bronze so it can be the shame with logos .
That would have been cool look 👍
How are these compared to the hd560s?
I've not heard the 560s since I reviewed them: th-cam.com/video/c7oNedFqXJQ/w-d-xo.html
If memory serves me correctly, the 560s is way brighter, more forward in the mids, not as natural tone and timbre and less detailed and resolving. But I don't have them to do a side by side comparison so going off memory.
@@TheHonestAudiophile out of memory, which one would you recommend?
That's easy, the 660s2. I sold the 560s the day I reviewed them.
As many others I prefer the HD600 in the series.
I agree
As stated in the video, I love the 600 for tone and timbre and vocals but it isn't a neutral reference.
People who hate everything except midrange feel this way all the time,
I Love My.Phillips X2HR
Glad you enjoy the X2HR.
WTF??
Thanks for your impressions. Everyone hears different. So many variables go into a listening experience.
😮
Thanks for the impressions. Lots of variables go into impressions, source gear, music, listening experience, etc. Thanks again for the impressions.
Totally disagree in every possible way. 650’s inferior across the board.
@@scottlowell493 lol
I've listened to 600, 650 and 660s2 for a long time, changing from one to another and although 650 are close timbre vise, they clearly are not as fast and detailed, separation is lacking considerably and they do sound muddy and more veiled, than the 660s2. 600 is not even close in all regards, not a fair comparison tbh.
for those who is hyped on hd660s2, I can tell you no magic here, hd600 is much better especially on mid range.
THat`s right, it needs good electronics. And than it will shine and make you listen for hours.
Glad you enjoy the HD600, thanks for the comment.
The 660s2 are by no means lower resolution, their sound definitely sounds more 'high resolution' than the other 600 series due to the upgraded drivers
this guy never hear hd600 😢

Seriously though, I do believe the 660s2 is a reference headphone that has excellent capabilities. As I stated in the video it is the most neutral and natural headphone of the 6xx line. Do I think there are better options available? Probably so but I've not heard everything so there is that to consider. I do think very highly of the 660s2.
Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.
I feel like you must have terrible hearing if you need to spend that much money on headphones.
I feel you must be totally retarded to make a statement like that.
Have you heard a quality set of audiophile headphones?
Dumb comment of the month. Congratulations.
