    I realize this is an old video but I always start from the beginning. I work for Mazda. Our skyactiv non turbo vehicles have a normally open purge at idle. Has something to do with lack of engine vacuum. However the turbo models are normally closed like most. If you are seeing a PCM command on the solenoid I would check for fuel saturation in the canister. A stuck purge is one thing but when it is commanded to open. The PCM is telling it to open for a reason. I found one vehicle we have a few years, (I think I was the first in country to find it) has been doing this. I checked live data and found the PCM commanded purge to be open on a normally closed purge at idle. I pinched the hose to see if lean fuel trims would correct which it did. We swapped out purge and same thing. So now we can say the purge is fine. Pulled down the canister and sure enough filled with fuel. Replaced fuel trims repaired. I know that chevy cruze is known for purge pattern failures tho. The ticking gives it away. Never looked the command tho. from PCM. Might want to dig on that especially if a full tank. Customer could have overfilled causing saturation.

    On VW's I often hear them at idle... sometimes nothing for quite a while, then on again for quite some time. I never worry about it unless I have an EVAP code or a rich/lean code. Nice to see that other manufacturers also have issues with sticking purge valves! =)

    I've been seeing purge commands at idle on a lot of them too, I think it is normal for the most part to have a small duty % at idle on newer vehicles at times when warm. Don't know why, but like I said, I've been taking a peak at purge pids on every one I hook up, to see what is normal and almost every make/model seems to be doing it. I chased my tail on a Chev Impala once with a perfectly normal purge command at idle once and after becoming frustrated I ended up shipping it down the road wondering if she'd be back again, never came back with any issues and that's why I remembered coming to the conclusion that it is normal as well as looking at other known goods. Good video Mario, thanks!

      @@SuperMarioDiagnostics GM pruge valves fail ALOT, I wonder sometimes if it is just cheap design or if over fueling has a lot to do with it. The dealer said its impossible to enrich it enought to cause a stall. Ooops they were wrong . Took me from 2010 as new till last year to find it😅😅 oh ya I'm that good. It commands Rich because once the canister is deplete of any fuel vapor it will then become a standard vacuum leak like any other. More air than fuel. 😉.

    🛠️ NAILED IT...Great Job Mario on a quick and effective diagnose. 😀
    BTW If your still wondering about the 17% command purge, I wonder if it has something to do with that other code. The P1101 (Dirty Throttle Body issue) and I would bet the TB idle compensation was high along with TPS % slightly upwards. Therefore it thinks your on the throttle. Just a thought..actually more of a guess since we didn't see any data on this one.
    🍻 Cheers Bro 😎

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes perfect sense, yes a dirty throttle body will set off that code, but so will any discrepancy between calculated airflow vs actual(vacuum leak, or dirty throttle body). So no I didn't film any idle compensation data. Nonetheless great food for thought. I'd that's a pretty accurate guess. Thanks for chiming in Kevin!

    Looking at fuel trims, whenever I hear the valve tick from the cabin, the trims go lean. Then it stops and goes back to stoichiometric. I have a 2016 Ford Focus. The ticking problem has been discussed online. Rough idle accompanies it, which I'm seeing. I'm 98% sure this has to be it.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I've since seen many more of these and its normal. But go back a couple of years and you wouldn't see purge valve opening at idle, it's more of recent thing. Plus every make and model is different, it can peg both lean or rich depending on how full the canister is. Thanks for watching!

    Can I fix the ignition malfunction before replacing the missing catalytic converter?What do you think is causing the ignition surging/cycling/skip and is the Evap purge valve involved? Most of the restoration of this car I performed myself, and I have not found the answer even with other mechanics basic diagnosis.
    Hello Super Mario, I recently bought a 2000 Pontiac Firebird 3800 V6, AT, electronic throttle body, 3 cat snsr's, / stock except for deleted catalytic converter (2 O2 (L + R) upstream/1 O2 down stream/disconnected).
    Replaced Plugs & wires, ICM, 3 coil packs, fuel injector #4, fuel, air, & oil filters, Fuel pump, Emission Evap Purge valve, but still click loudly like in this video but there is a misfire like condition where the engine misfires & or surges like every 3-5 seconds this occurs randomly and disappears randomly occurs mostly when warm. Runs strong and smooth except when it starts this cycling issue; it still has power but cycles/misses/?. The Evap loud clicking is louder while this condition occurs and idles with a repetitive vibration occasionally simultaneous to the condition, mostly after warm up and a drive.
    Diag:
    - I bought a cheap code scanner and keep only getting P0140 (O2 Circuit No Activity Detected, Bank 1 Sensor 2) due to the missing catalytic converter and disconnected O2 downstream sensor.
    -I took my car on a road test (0-70 mph) with the tool and all of the online readings (O2 sensors trim levels, throttle, air __, etc seemed within basic operational parameters according to multiple ref. sources). Anomalies: Status changed from CL (closed loop?) to OL overdrive (open loop with car in overdrive?) during hard accelerations only. CL is the norm. I understand that the ECM should control all the major ignition operations when the engine is warm and conditions are normal.
    I took my car to a couple of mechanics who stated they wont do a full diagnostic till I get the catalytic converter replaced. I have 2 year of auto mechanics classes manys year ago, 2000 Chevrolet Camaro & Pontiac Firebird Service Manual Volume 1.
    Also could not detect any vacuum leaks nor bad electrical connections under the hood, also had the fuel pump replaced. The car originally had 2 other codes solved P0301 and P0304; they stopped after replacing the worn ignition components including #4 fuel injector. Also the fuel gauge misreported fuel just after the fuel pump replacement 10/2019 lately reports accurately even when very low.
    Just am financially (work) recovering after natural weather disaster Berkeley Co. SC and will get a new aftermarket catalytic converter and a downstream O2 sensor replaced new later this year. Just had my only other car break permanently during 2019's Hurricane Dorian.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going in open loop during hard acceleration is normal.
      When you disconnect the purge valve, all clicking goes away?
      when in open loop, does it continue to surge?
      Sounds like when it's warmed up and gone into closed loop, that's where your problems start.
      What are your fuel trims at hot idle, and when you slightly rev it up where do your fuel trims go.
      Sorry but is a basic code reader all you have to diagnose this? Do you have an oscilloscope?

    So these purge values are gonna click even when in perfect running condition? I feel like I can hear it so well because I have extremely good hearing. The car has no issues starting up, no hesitating at idle, none of that. The mechanic was looking at it with me and he said it was normal or the injectors(still normal). Mine is a 2014 chevy cruz.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, they are loud. But they tend to get louder when failing. You may not feel any symptoms until it gets past a certain threshold. But yes in perfect conditions they click at idle and when cruising

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics

      The ticking is normal operation. As for the p0171 after the fuel content has been depleted from the charcoal canister(which may not take long), it then sucks in air, since the vent valve is open. This leans out your mixture and sets off a lean code

The ticking is normal operation of the purge valve, it does not necessarily mean it's bad, i show exactly how to test it here with no tools, by disconnecting the electrical connector to the purge valve while the car is on(will throw a purge circuit code) and removing the fuel tank side hose, and checking for vacuum at the open end of the purge valve.

      The customer did not make it clear whether it was after an overnight. The symptom did not occur with us, so ultimately i relied on the codes retrieved. Which aligned perfectly with the info the customer DID provide. Now as for a hard start after an overnight. You may want to keep an eye on fuel pressure. Maybe even the coolant temp sensor. Loan a scanner from your local auto zone or other parts house and check your live data for any anomalies. A disconnected ect sensor can fool the ecm into enriching the mixture so much that it creates a long crank time, but when the engine is warmed it may be less affected, since it's already warm

    Give the clip a good squeeze and no flat head screw driver is needed. Plus the red clip goes on last from the bottom and the shorter part on the clip goes on the underside of the passenger side. Safest way to not break the clip. Cause it will if your not careful ha

    I have the same code. How much would this cost at a shop if I were to decide to take it in instead of fixing it myself? Ball park.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having the same code wouldn't necessarily mean that it's the same culprit. A diagnosis must be performed first. I only show a testing method for one possibility for this code to set. I've no idea what they would charge you. Too many factors contribute to shop labor times, and diagnostic fees.
