@ Some websites need you to verify e-mail, so you'd need an address you can check. There are free services like 10 minute mail, which allow you to make a temporary spamcatcher e-mail address for situations like these.

Precisely what I felt needed to be said. The most supported Ubuntu available is unacceptable to him, yet he provides no performance testing and there wasn't any bloatware. I only learned more on how little effort Jay puts into his videos,while learning nothing I didn't already know. Writing a script beforehand would greatly help his presentation value.
If the drive was USB 2.0, that'd be the bottleneck. However, data rates should be quite viable for speeding up PCs when both devices have USB 3.0 support.

@@Krack3nTehC0D3z I feel like the product, although a bit overpriced, does do what it says it does (mostly). And a large portion of people who would buy this do not have the computer literacy to make their own bootable Linux flash drive anyways. The only area that it is misleading is when it says it will let you game on it, which as stated in the video is simply not true. If you look around there are actually a few videos of people testing the product (I know I watched one somewhere) but its kind of disappointing that Jay didn't even do anything with xtrapc at all. He just plugged it in and read the packaging.

I just tested a Sandisk USB 3.0 drive in a USB SS 10 (red) port with CrystalDiskMark and it performed better than my WD Black in every measure other than write speed, which isn't too important in gaming anyway. Sandisk reading at 182 MB/s, easily beats WD Black with 102 MB/s. WD's only real advantage is being about 18 MB/s better in write speed, which is an easy tradeoff when considering using a flash drive over HDD. USB C and external M.2 drives will only make this concept more feasible in the very near future when they become more common as prices drop.
The gaming claim is misleading, especially for a USB 2.0 drive. No matter what drive is used, the host PC would need gaming spec hardware. I'd say a 128GB USB 3.0 or better drive should be acceptable storage for playing Linux Steam games, but only with modern PCs that have specs to support it. Wine on Linux or a bootable Windows 10 drive, which is now possible, would add wide compatability for games and apps, making this idea more practical too.

Yeah, they just slapped an old and - as you already pointed out - free live OS on a $6 USB stick, dropped a $0.0001 sticker with their own logo over the manufacturer's brand, and charged people $35 for the priviledge of getting bamboozled.
By the way, you don't need Windows or any other OS already installed, you just need to have a BIOS that lets you select boot medium options... and obviously RAM, a CPU and a motherboard.

Well for example RedHat Linux is a modified (paid) version of Ubuntu. Though they heavily modify it where as this was just change some logos and themes.
Linux I believe is open source and therefore free to modify and then sell.
@@JaysTechVault Redhat is not a fork of Ubuntu, it is a fork of Fedora. Recently they changed the tiering but traditionally Fedora was the bleeding edge testing for RPM based Linux distros. Redhat was then a paid support version of Fedora that that was designed for stability. Then you had Centos which can be thought of as a free fork of RedHat.
A lawyer could wriggle out of that by saying the consumer is paying for the media itself (the flash drive).

Besides been false advertising, and selling of your e-mail address, my question, would be how much spyware did the build into the Linux distribution they altered? I wouldn't trust it at all.
I always use a throwaway email when dealing with shady places... They literally bombard you with emails, and sometimes they do it from multiple email addresses.

11:35 Is an issue with the window manager used for this distro. The distro is Lubuntu that ships with the LXQT desktop that uses the OpenBox window manager. That issue is a problem with OpenBox, not an issue with the version of Ubuntu. LXQT should fix itself when booted into an actual desktop session.

In theory, the only reason it would make your pc faster is cause you don't load the bigger Windows OS files into ram, but it won't be really noticable.

@@mina_loi shoplinux (dot) online sells linux on a USB stick for $12 (at most) and it comes with a better USB stick that's USB 3 from sandisk and kingston, both reputable brands.
shoplinux's USB sticks are double the cost of the xtraPC stick but the end price is less than half.

18.04 is newer than I was expecting... it's still the latest LTS release for a few more months and supported until 2028.

for about 15$ of less you can get the same thing just get a usb stick with semi-decent read-write times and install a lightweight linux distro
I would be very iffy about plugging in a random usb like that into an already running pc. It seems like a great way to get a keylogger or other form of malware on your pc.
And this is why I keep a couple burnable PC's in my closet still. Well that and I occasionally flip gpus off of ebay and like hell am I going to test them in something I love. And you would be surprised to find out how many broken GPUs will wake back up after a bath in an ultrasonic cleaner.
My mom got me one of these for Christmas once. I just formatted it and used it as a flash drive instead.

Jay - telling us about the spam is a good thing. There are so many contradictions in what you showed us that I find it hard to believe that anybody would fall for this foolishness. The bit about "any old PC" morphing into "you must have a 64-bit PC running Windows 10" should send up warning rockets. I hoped the first thing you would do with it would be to do a virus scan on it. Otherwise, PT Barnum would have loved this one!
FYI I have Linux Mint running on a new Ryzen build and that really is blazing fast. Cost a bit or than that USB key, grin.

Wouldnt suprise me if the reason why they said the computer needed to have windows 10 is so that they could show how to select the boot device in a way that would work for everyone regardless of which PC you are using
(Different PCs have different ways of getting into the boot options, especially laptops, older laptops seem to always have a different key that you have to press to get into the boot menu)

My personal opinion if you're thinking about the Ubuntu route... Go with Linux Mint instead. Mostly the same benefits and the software suite that comes with it is quite reasonable. I sincerely think Linux mint is better than Ubuntu.
I've found Linux Mint to be slightly too heavy on some older computers. I always use Xubuntu which is extremely lightweight.
@@FlyboyHelosim There is also Lubuntu wich is a classic if its a very old rig. Xubuntu is basicly the same as ubuntu but with XFCE if I remember correctly. Lubuntu goes way more far to conserve ressources. I'll have to try Xubuntu but I suspect Lubuntu will still win on a toaster machine.
@@thermallance7947 Yeah I'm aware of Lubuntu and did actually comment about that elsewhere. As far as resources go, all I know is I put Xubuntu on an old-ish netbook and it ran fine. I also just like the plain look of Xubuntu.

It runs a version of ubuntu called Lubuntu. It uses the LXDE desktop environment, and yes it is very light weight. I don't think it is as lightweight as XFCE though, but still. I don't think it is a "Scam", but misleading sure, it for the most part does what it says of speeding up your PC, NOT speeding up Windows, though the requirements of Windows 10 installed is weird, but I think I understand it, just not worded the best. I think they were just saying to stick with PC, not Mac and just saying "Windows Installed" just to make that clear. Yes it is over priced, but if people will pay, than that is just business.

This is why I download and install Linux straight from the developers or from Sourceforge. I never buy tainted copies from companies such as Xtra-PC. If everything else goes down the toilet, I always have my trusty optical drives, plenty of RAM, and a copy of the latest Knoppix DVD to boot the computer, do what I need to do, save the file to external device such as an external hard drive, SSD, thumb / flashdrive, and when I am finished, go to the start menu (penguin) or other Icon and shutdown. The computer unmounts the virtual drive created in ram, kicks the DVD, and shuts off. Then you restart the computer and it has no clue what it was doing while under Knoppix. Then Windows boots as normal

I'm not even into flash drives but from the looks already i could tell it's a SanDisk Cruzer drive ( ~$4 for 16GB ).
