  • In this video I discuss the path to becoming a plastic surgeon, but also my experience as a female entering into the field and starting my family.
Becoming a plastic surgeon is definitely not for the faint of heart. You have 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, 6-7 years of residency, plus a possible additional year of fellowship. That's potentially 12 years of schooling/training to become a plastic surgeon. Of course all of this takes place during prime reproductive years for a female.
Some women decide to wait until after they finish training before having kids. I chose to have mine while I was in training. It is definitely difficult working 70-80 hours a week while pregnant, let alone having the baby and getting even less sleep at home once they are born.
There are many challenges that come with having your kids as a resident, but for me it was worth it and I wouldn't change a thing. I want to encourage women out there that are interested in a surgical career, but worry about having children that it is possible.... difficult, but possible. Having a good support system is key!
