Cyan wanted the camera in the lake to track you in the original game, but the logistics of pre-rendering the camera in the proper position for every conceivable viewing angle was too much of a hassle. In the remake, however, the environments are fully 3D and rendered in real time, making such a feat trivial. It certainly adds an air of paranoia to the atmosphere, knowing that you are most definitely being watched. The small "hole in the world" on Jungle Island both ties into the remake's changes to the Domes and the Star Fissure, and really drives home that the Age of Riven is coming apart at the seams. Riven's instability is not just a matter of earthquakes or seemingly physics-defying phenomena; the fabric of reality is _literally_ breaking down. The native Rivenese numbering system was a brilliant addition. It's something that would logically exist, despite Gehn's ongoing efforts to displace it with the D'ni base-5 numerical system, and gives old Myst fans, who have by this point practically _memorized_ the D'ni number system, a new puzzle to solve that tests their logical deduction skills in a similar way to the original. Of all the changes in the remake, this one feels the most natural. The Totems of the remake are certainly a lot less subtle than the wooden Eyes of the original, but Cyan still remains in fine form by giving the player incomplete data-sets they are required to extrapolate, and surrounding clues with deliberate red herrings to mislead the incurious and inattentive.
