Bryn is such a character! Talented singer but a great entertainer too, very well beloved in his home country Wales 🏴
Bryn is amazing at every character he plays when singing. He's such an incredible talent. Amazing voice.
Bryn Terfel was runner up in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1989, beaten to the post by another commanding baritone, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, although Terfel took home the Lieder Prize. It was a very good year. So strange that Dmitri is no longer with us. Nevertheless Cardiff gave a great start to their favourite son, who went on to give many acclaimed performances on the opera stage, and also some crossover roles such as this one, and a few years back, a very good Sweeny Todd.
He can be a big cuddly bear, full of mirth and stories; but make no mistake, that voice is HUGE, and can be absolutely terrifying! He's a really good singing actor. I was lucky enough to see him do Figaro (in the Marriage thereof) at ENO in 1991, and he was just perfect, from the minute he first appeared, measuring out his nuptial bed - so young and horny and ebulluent in a way that some singers never are. More Mozart followed, but he's also done lots of Wagner and Puccini, and he's a fine recitalist of English song, Schubert, and others. Very humble guy, who has always maintained his Welsh identity, even as he's toured the world's most prestigious opera stages. National Treasure of Wales and the UK.
Hard to beat Topol, but, I'd listen to this again. One of my favorite musicals.
Topol was also really fine. As with Bryn here and Zero Mostel, another personal take but all three never going outside what makes this song such fun.

My fellow countryman, he is from the same part of North Wales as I am. Hes a legend back home in Wales💖
I saw "Fiddler on the Roof" in the movie theater when it first came out. I can say Bryn has the main character down pat. 🥰
While this is a decent enough performance, I will forever be spoiled for other performances by seeing Chaim Topol himself perform it as Tevye the Dairyman live in Fiddler On The Roof at the London Palladium in the summer of 1994.
Chava, one of his daughters in the musical, was actually played by his real-life daughter Adi Topol Margalith - the only time she took the role with her real father in the lead.
The rest can just bring back memories of that amazing performance - a mixture of comedy, tragedy, acting, singing, and very powerful emotion.
Topol completely owned that role from when he first played it in the Israeli production at the age of 30 (half the age of Tevye!), and for over 3,500 further performances - learning English in order to star in the London productions.
The best that anyone else could do was imitate the character he developed and used in the 1971 film. And of course, he did not have to act an accent - others had to copy his.
So sorry, late to the party. I'm retired in the Dominican Republic, and after Voiceplay's "if I Were A Rich Man/Girl" I was showing some local kids the history behing the song. Had not heard Bryn before, and I love him. So did they. Somehow this led into Floor and Henk Poort, Fosse, Gwen Verdon, and "The Queen of the Night" and more of you. So on to more musical adventures.! Thank you so much! You've made a heck of an impression on the kids.

Chaim Topol is the First and only version, but this was truly a good version as well.
I just watched The Fiddler on the Roof for the first time last night! I am 24-years-old, and I've always wanted to see this one with my family. This opera performance of If I Were A Rich Man was amazing! Topol's original was fantastic of course, but I think this is spectacular, too. Thanks for this video! :)

Maggie, love your channel! Love that you reacted to Bryn Terfel, my favorite baritone! I saw him in the simulcast performances of Wagner's Ring Cycle a few years back. But I almost fell out of the chair laughing when you said he was an opera singer and put up an animation of an Elvis-looking character. One of the craziest stage productions I have ever seen was when Bryn played Dr. Dulcamara in Donizetti's " L’Elisir d’amore", and in one part, they had Bryn dressed and coiffed to look like Elvis. Critics and fans alike either loved it or hated it. But either way, that scene is iconic!!!

The original Broadway production had Zero Mostel playing Tevye and Topol played him in the movie. I love Topols voice and how he played the character. Fiddler on The Roof is one of my all time favorite musical followed by Cabaret with Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey as the MC.🥰
So now you have to do Chaim Topol in the movies version! To me and many it is THE version!!

This is almost a spiritual at least once a year to view fiddler on the roof. I was in Broadway theatrical relocation trucking for many years. Fiddler on the roof was one of the shows that I moved more than once. My great-grandparents are from whales and Scotland. Thank you for your contribution. I'm new here. Excellent performance. I've never seen a stage performance but have watched the 1971 movie version. Not really my cup of tea but still well done. Love watching your reactions even to music I don't particularly care for. Keep them coming.
Bryn played Sweeney Todd during concert performance. He was excellent, as one would expect.

This is great! He's hilarious and talented. I'd like you to see Scott Wentworth's version of this song, but the only version on it on TH-cam is just part of the song.
For a Welsh bass-baritone to sing is so well, after the only version I've ever heard and seen was sung by Chaim Topol, an Israeli actor
You should also watch the original topol version.
Find his version from The Pearl Fishers - the men's duet - Au fond du temple saint by Bizet - there is a version on TH-cam with Bryn and Andrea Bocelli that is stellar!!!

As funny of this song is, my favorite part is when he talks about studying the Torah with the learned men and how that would be the sweetest thing of all. Ultimately, a simple man who simply wants to know his God more.....
