  • It has been a long time coming but we've finally managed to get our Nova Vista Alpha review up and running!
    The Alpha turned out to be an incredibly interesting rifle simply because of what it brings to the table at the price.
    But is it the giant slayer that some are stating it to be or is it simply overhyped trash? Let's find out!
    For more information about the Nova Vista Alpha you can get in touch with us at bigdansairguns.co.uk

      Hi Adey,
      the Wasps really caught me by surprise by just how good they are. So far we've tested them in the Alpha, M16 and an S410 and they were pellet on pellet with each rifle.
      That being said though the bad news is that they aren't being made any more unfortunately so if you want to try some I'd pounce on a tin while you can, just stay away from the light blue tin.

    Here in the USA these guns in .22 shot 15.4 grain pellets at 915 FPS on high power and on low power shoot at 725 FPS. The regulator is under the back of the barrel in front of the receiver and is brass with indents in it and can only be adjusted when there is no pressure in the air cylinder. I have several of these guns for my grandchildren and they are indeed quite good.

    Smart looking rifle ( hope the wooden stock would look a tad better ) and an excellent price , with loads of features ( contrary too some reviews on the tube , the power adjuster CAN be useful ) .. the only rifle I see at this price range that I think would be a real contender for anyone in the market for a " sub £300 " rifle is the KRAL NPO2 ..
    yet again , a great review .. you are without doubt the best rifle reviewer on TH-cam ... Excellent work
    Have a great Christmas and a happy and healthy New year ... To you and all your subscribers

      Hi Mark,
      thanks ever so much for the wonderful comment mate and I wish you and your family a fantastic Christmas.
      The wooden stock is a bit better and does feature stippling on the forestock but it isn't actually as pronounced as what you'll find on the synthetic version.
      We need to review the NP02 as they're an interesting little rifle for sure.

    • @heathhalfhill6867
      @heathhalfhill6867 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Homer the wooden stock is pretty nice and way more traditional but it is a little bit heavier than the synthetic stock and only 2 screws hold it on unlike the synthetic because of the multiple pieces that make it up. The wooden stock is of birch and makes a better bench gun due to the extra weight. I think it is about a pound and a half more than the synthetic stock. Both are still very nice guns in either choice of stocks. Take care.

    The way I get around shooting during the winter is by buying some leather gloves (M&S). Cutting a slit in the leather and fleece lining (where the joint of your index finger is). Repeat on the same joint on your thumb part of the glove. Do this on both gloves. You can now poke out your index finger and thumb so you can load your pellets, feel the trigger etc. And leather is windproof and water resistant!

      Hey mate,
      M&S? that's too rich for my blood I'm a Tesco's man haha.
      I'll give it a look mate. The gloves I'm using aren't bad but when it rains they're miserable!

      @@bigdansairguns83 I've never tried the ones from tesco. Should work either way. The great thing about this modification is that you can re-apply individual fingers of the glove when you're not shooting. 👍

    Dan, another epic review, love it ! What a great gun, the nova vista does indeed look to be a bargain buy at £299 and great accuracy and handling too. I would love to see a review on the wood stocked version when it becomes available in the 177 cal. Like you , I can only imagine the power adjuster is aimed at the f a c model, but would have been nice if it had a low setting of say 8ft lbs. I note you say the American market version of this gun has open sights as standard, so why not the UK market ? It would be great to have that option, especially for plinking in smaller back yards. Anyway Dan , finally apart from the .177 cal wood version of this gun, other reviews I would like to see are the Gammo GX40. / Phox .177 and intrigued to see the new pr900w MK2 in .177 also, and find out if all the faults have been rectified now ? That's it for now Dan, keep up the excellent work and wish you a good Christmas.
    Cheers Brian.

    Good review! I’am in the States! Purchased one in wood furniture after watching global reviews! As a youth my Dad wouldn’t let me have a BB gun (put your eye out kid), so 22 rifles, and such. Well all of it! So after 60 years of marksmanship and hunting I need a departure. Every one in my family is a machinist and for the price the Nova Vista is well made for the price. Thanks for the review!

      @bigdansairguns83  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate!
      I'm glad to hear you're happy with your Nova. The only thing I don't like about the Alpha is the three piece synthetic stock and the face that the stock holds some of the pins in place which can be troublesome.
      When it comes to having fun it takes a lot to beat a bit of plinking in the garden or just doing some target shooting with a few mates.

    I've just purchased an .22 Alpha (arriving mid-late June) and after seeing this video I decided to buy a tin of the .177 Red tin Wasps for my cheap Baikal MP-512 springer. When I got them they looked a bit cheap, compared to my tight-fitting Excite Spike pellets & they seemed very loose in the bore. However, they are by far the most accurate pellets I've tried (having only tried various budget options, such as Germania, Excite Spike & Crossman Premier Super Match). I'll definitely be trying the purple tin .22 Wasps when my new Alpha arrives. Thanks for the review. It definitely helped me make up my mind to purchase this rifle. I believe it's called the Nova Vista Liberty in the US (someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that).

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is indeed what our cousins across the sea call it I believe, they seem to be pretty big fans of them over there and I can't blame them!
      The Wasps are chronically underrated pellets aren't they? The .22 purple tin Wasps and the .177's have been fantastic in most of what I've put them through even beating some of the big brands. It's a shame that they've been discontinued now though so get them while you can.
      Thanks Rooster and I'm glad the Wasps work for you mate.

      @@bigdansairguns83 I was not aware they had been discontinued. I couldn't find any reds the last time I stocked up from Amazon & went with some cheap Germania, which are very tight in the bore & don't shoot half as well as the loose-fitting Wasps. I'll scour the net now to see if I can pick some up before they disappear. Thanks

    Fake plasticy stippling sounds lovely Dan lol but seriously like the idea of an externally adjustable regulator good value for money would make a good working gun for around the farm or to throw in the back of the truck and not have to worry about scratching or banging it seems like it could be set up as a really cheap workhorse without busting the bank options are always a good idea nice darts Dan wooden stock model could be worth a look also atvb Dave

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David,
      you can't beat a bit of high quality fake stippling mate haha.
      Exactly, the rifle in the synthetic stock makes an exceptional knockabout hunter that you would require very little pumping due to the shot count.
      I reckon having one at FAC power levels though would really show its potential and would make that power adjuster have a far more pronounced effect.
      A 30ft-lbs .22 rifle with adjustable power and a reg for less than a used S410? Hell yes!!

    Hi Dan, apologies for taking my time giving you my thoughts on the
    Alpha .22. As you know when I purchased this from you I was getting it for my son and we were going shooting on the following Sunday. Well he couldn't make it so I went by myself with the rifle.
    My comments, it's brilliant the accuracy in my mind is better than the expensive rifle that I have. I was punching holes at 50 metres and the grouping under a 5 pence piece (10 shots). This was after I'd sighted it in.
    I then went on to see if I could get some rabbits. I ended up with total of 24. These varied in range from 30 - 60 metres. The report from the gun is very quiet hence my total.
    The only downside is it only comes with one magazine which I must say is very easy to load. I enjoyed my visit to your establishment.
    I've actually falling in love with it but I still would like the wooden stock one.
    Will be contacting you in early March.
    Still can't get over the price.
    Regards
    Richard Dunlop.

      Hi Richard,
      I'm glad you're liking the rifle mate they give the rifle so much for so little! The stock is on the cheap side no doubt but they've concentrated on the most important bits (barrel and action) and they've made a corker!
      It was great meeting you Richard and you're always welcome back, I'll let you know when we've got the wooden stock versions available.
      Thanks Richard and if you ever need anything never hesitate to get in touch.

    One of the Liberty’s I have has the synthetic stock and just like the Nova Vista Freedom and the Seneca Aspen, they sound hollow and cheap. However They are rigid and the sound deadens when I used camouflage tape to make them more of a hunting gun. It has the texture of duct tape kinda and one large roll was enough to do 2 guns. They finished up pretty ok and that cheap plastic sound is all gone. Very thorough review thank you. You have some of the best reviews on TH-cam and I appreciate it.

      @bigdansairguns83  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind comments Heath it means a lot.
      Yeah the stock itself definitely isn't the best synthetic I've ever felt. That being said though when you consider the overall cost of the rifle you really can't complain too much!
      The "stippling" is a nice little touch as well. The wooden stock definitely feels a bit better though.

    I know most reviewers of Airguns comment negatively about the manometer being on the muzzle end of the gun but in reality how many people have you heard of actually shooting themselves accidentally? I think most if not all shooters are aware of the safety issues with this system but it’s there so live with it.

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith.
      I do agree to an extent but it has always rubbed me up the wrong way that one of the first lessons you teach in regards to shooting is always treat the rifle as though it's loaded and don't look down the barrel.
      To check your air pressure you have to almost look down the barrel.. it's not the best design at all but I pick on all PCP's for this not just Nova Vista.

    When sound testing the wind speed needs to below the ambient noise (background noise) need to be at least 10dBa below the max reading of what you are measuring and it needs to be on an open area at least 10m free from trees hedges etc and building otherwise you get a false reading.

    If you look behind the trigger you see a set screw and toward the butt you see another hole with a grub screw in it - take the trigger assembly off and remove the grub screw and move the set screw to where the grub screw was.. This will give more leverage and lighten the trigger considerably.. Accuracy results from matching Velocity, Pellet/bullet weight, barrel twist rate.. With pellets a 4th factor includes Tightness (diameter of the pellet - a pellet sizer is handy to have). This is true with center fire, rim fire, muzzle loaders, and air guns. I have had good luck cleaning barrels with Thompson Center Bore Butter, clean with bore butter and dry patches then run a patch with bore butter (don't dry patch the last pass, leave the Bore Butter in the barrel and shoot it out), shoot several rounds 100+ then run only a dry patch and you should be good to go (might not ever have to clean your barrel again other than an occasional dry patch after a few hundred rounds).. Thompson Center claims that the Bore Butter helps season a barrel (what ever that means or how it does it, I don't know).. Another plus is that the Bore Butter won't destroy any rubber "O" rings if contact is made.. I think that the Nova Vista (wood) is the best bang for your bucks.. It doesn't matter if you spend $10 or $10,000, it all comes down to one thing - accuracy.. Most all rifles (powder or air) can be improved on with some adjustments to the load (pressure), get the right pressures, right bullet weight, right barrel twist all matched well and you have accuracy..

    Cheek risers are cheap and quite useful. I have one of the nylon wrap around type. I carry spare mags and single shot tray one side and on the 'bullet holder' side I bought some aluminium pill carriers which slot in nicely and each holds 35 .177 pellets so 6x35 gives me 210 pellets; more than enough. The risers come in multiple colours, are excellent value plus they are warm to the touch and comfortable. Each of my eight rifles has one.

    Looks good. Ive still got my first pcp which is the SMK pr900w and its still really accurate. Was thinking of upgrading to this with the wooden stock, main upgrade reason is for the higher shot count and the regulator. The SIG VIRTUS .22 PCP has just been released a modern AR looking air rifle with a good sized tank full power regulated pcp. I am intrigued to see what its like but there are no reviews as of yet. Maybe a video idea? hint hint haha.

  • @vansantsam

    Not for Europe - but my .177 will go from 17 fpe down to 11 fpe switching from high to low, using JSB 16.2 grain, velocities of 679 and 555 high to low. I have in the past turned mine up to 26 fpe with hammer adjustment and slight increase on the regulator and I am sure with further adjustments 30 fpe could be reached. But since I don't hunt with an air rifle and shoot mostly 25-50 yards, occasionally 75-100, 17 fpe works just fine with plenty of shots. So on a sub 12 fpe there probably would not be much difference because even on high not much air is flowing with the larger transfer port vs the smaller transfer port.. And with higher air flow then the smaller transfer port would restrict the air more..

      Hi Lee!
      The Wasps are brilliant old pellets and the new ones aren't half bad either. Our Artemis M16 is pellet on pellet with the .177's.
      The Alpha really is a ton of rifle at the price and it'd happily keep up with far more expensive rifles when it comes to accuracy.
      Cheers Lee.

    If you turn the hammer down a bit, and fill to 300 BAR, I think the power at the muzzle would be lower as the hammer would struggle to open the valve. Sounds like an ideal candidate for an aftermarket regulator,

    • @vansantsam
      @vansantsam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe that is exactly how it works - A regulator has both intake and exhaust valves, non regulated guns only have an exhaust valve, the regulator is there to provide constant pressure no matter if the tube is 250 or 300 bar, the hammer is still faced with the same resistance to open the exhaust valve.. Aftermarket regulator isn't going to change anything.. If your regulator is set for 100 bar then the intake valve will close no matter if your tube is 200-250-300 bar.. when your hammer strikes the exhaust valve the regulator opens the exhaust valve and lets air out (if the hammer strikes it hard it will let all the air out, if it strikes it soft then it only lets a little out, it may only let 50 bar out and then refill to 100 bar).. An easy mistake people make is that they have a regulator set at 100 bar for example and their hammer is too high (high enough to open 120 bar), then before the regulator can close up, air from the tube gets past the regulator (because the exhaust valve is open too far and for too long) and makes consistency struggle because you have declining pressure from the tube that is influencing each shot (almost like not having a regulator at all).. If you want to learn more then check out some videos by Robert Lane, he does a real good job explaining regulators and how to set things up properly.. If you have a regulator and not getting the consistency you think you should get then chances are the hammer is set too high.. either lower the hammer or increase the regulator to get a better balance.. A common mistake people make is thinking that if they increase the regulator (only) then they will get more velocity - that is not always true, you will get lower velocity because the hammer has a harder time to open the exhaust valve.. If your hammer is only letting 60% of the air out (it may only let 40% out now) butt lowering the regulator (reducing the pressure) the hammer can now let more air out because it can easily open the exhaust valve and keep it open longer and may now let 80% of the air out thus increasing velocity.. If you increase the regulator then you also have to increase the hammer - to keep the balance.. You can increase and decrease the hammer without adjusting the regulator just so long as you don't have the hammer above the regulated pressure.. Only adjust the regulator if you can't get where you want to be with hammer adjustments only..

    • @bobthebarsteward
      @bobthebarsteward 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vansantsam For some reason my reply to you has vanished, I'm quite sure it was polite and didn't breach any rules but gone it has. To cut it short, having fitted regulators myself I know what an in depth job it can be, my assessment was based on the high cylinder pressure and volume being way too much for a 12 ft/lbs rifle, it's probably fitted with a weak hammer spring to comply with UK regulations and this is bouncing on the valve stem, wasting air on each shot.

      Not this year I'm afraid, from what I've heard our suppliers don't have a definitive date as of yet but it won't be any time soon. A shame as they were a nice rifle the Alpha.
      Alternatively if you want a similarly designed rifle that's only a smidge more expensive I highly recommend the Artemis M22. Instead of the sidelever it's a bolt but the overall build quality is better than the Alpha in my opinion.

      Hi William!
      I can only comment on the original Aselkon rifles/MX10 as they've since had a new regulator installed in them but the ones we had were not very good to say the least... ( bent scope rails/zero consistency). You'd be far better off with an Artemis P-15, Breaker, Kuzey K300 or Knight/Empire.
      That said hopefully the new Aselkons may be a bit better due to the changes made but I've not handled one.

      FYI, in my country M16 is cheaper than Nova Vista. And I have seen this gun going to 900 with 18 gr JSB. Why is it low power for you out of the box. Of course the count will be around 50 for that.

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hassan!
      Sorry for the late reply mate.
      It depends on which you prioritise when it comes to a rifle, if you're trying to spend as little as possible and you'd like a greater shot count and a less pellet fussy barrel I'd choose the Alpha.
      On the other hand I do find the M16 to be the more refined rifle having a more consistent regulator and once you find the pellet it likes (usually HN FTT/Baracuda) they're just as accurate as rifles well over twice the price. The stock is also nicer on the M16 and the side lever is more positive to use.
      It all depends on what you're after mate but if you have any other questions never hesitate to ask.
      All the best.

      Hi Jonathan!
      If your divers bottle is only displaying 200 bar it sounds like your bottle may need re-filling as you can only fill the gun as with the amount of air/pressure that is in your divers bottle.
      That being said it may be worth testing your bottle on another rifle if you have access to it. Make sure to fire the rifle first so it is below 200 bar and then try re-filling and see if it exceeds 200 (be careful not to overfill it however).

      Hi Shumble.
      JSB's are superb pellets and they do group well in a lot of guns... not all of them though and they can give funky results through the chrono as they're not that consistent when it comes to weight.
      I'm a bit of a H&N man myself, usually it's between JSB and these when it comes to the ultimate pellet for most of my barrels(although the Rifle Premiums have been the best in a few of them).
      Barrels can be odd creatures at times.

    One think i have learnt by shooting air rifle and rim fires over the years is a pellet in air rifle or a bullet in a rim fire just because said pellet or bullet is ment to be good. Does not mean it will be good in your rifle. Just have to find the right pellet or bullet for your barrel. Just one thing people are very quick to defend a expensive pellet and make excuses like did you weigh them ect. However when it comes to cheap pellets the same people will say no they are crap not did you weigh them.

Give me a wood stock every time. Having said that I do use a green Scorpion synthetic stock instead of the walnut one in my Ultra SE when ratting but that is a solid bit of kit. They do have their place especially in the field.
    Wasp pellets. OK when using the single shot trsy but they cause real problems in ALL my msgazines. I believe it's the fact they are a pretty short pellet. I disgree they are as good as the old red Eley marked tins but that is just based on my own experience. I got a lot if dirty and damaged pellets in the newer brand.

      Hi Jorge,
      We can also have high powered air rifles however we need to apply for an FAC license to get them the same as with powder burners.
      You can even own a .50 cal in the UK but it needs to be registered at a gun club that would permit it.
      Besides you may have more relaxed gun laws but we have better cars.
      So take that.

      Big Dan's Airguns nice Good at least they give you the opportunity to own more powerful air rifles and firearms. I do have to laugh about the cars. I own a Ford Mustang GT manual transmission of course. Don’t know what you guys have I used to watch top gear ⚙️ and they had some doozies . Anyway I wish you the best.

      @@juliusdream2683 Hi Jorge!
      I'd actually sell a member of my family for a Mustang.. In fact I'd take a Mustang over any BMW, Mercedes or Audi.
      The good news is we get them over here now (still waiting on the Camaro and Challenger) and they're stunning looking things when you see them on the road.
      The funniest thing was that a few years ago a Ford dealer near us had the new Mustang parked next to the Mondeo Vignale. Don't get me wrong the Vignale was a lovely car but who the hell would pay £2k more for a Mondeo when you could have a V8 Mustang!?
