  • I picked up a new Stihl MS391 chainsaw and I think I got a pretty good deal on it too. In this video I compare it to my 15 year old Husqvarna 359 then I try it out a tree downed from a recent wind storm. I'm new to Stihl and I do have a few questions about it so maybe you Stihl guys can help me out?

Way late to the party but that was one heck of a deal on that saw. That bar was perfect, hardly used. I just got one from a old friend for $100.00 it was to heavy for him and he also gave me a farm boss.

That sounds almost exactly how I got my 391 except for one small change. Some kid over in Georgia bought one. Tried using it once and basically took his kneecap off with it...... I bought it from him but I think I paid closer to 400 or 450

I like what you're saying with the Stihl easy compression full chord I have a Husqvarna 359 just as you I use the decompression button on my to start just to make it very easy I'm in total agreement with you my 359 is a beast once I learned how to sharpen a chainsaw correctly which I'm sad to say took a little bit but I have not had anyone they can beat my 359 since I've become the sharpening master I look forward to more of your videos with the the new saw I'm curious myself I've always wanted a Stihl brand chainsaw but have only had Husqvarna once again my 359 is a beast

I found a 391 on the street, had it checked by my favorite chainsaw mechanic, cost $90.00. I have been using it since and never used my Husqvarna 460, which I loved and was proud to own. The Stihl 391 is a beast. It is the top of the line before going pro. I love that it does not use grease at the tip. From what I hear, the grease makes saw dust get stuck on the grease and it creates problems whereas the Stihl does not have grease at the tip so it stays dry. I love it and don't want to use any other brand. Great video.

Actually, the 359 is a commercial saw, easier to work on and probably produces more power. The Stihl is a homeowner's saw but is still a good saw. The flippy caps aren't something most woodcutters want, especially when they leak on you while you're using it..

I have been a Husq chainsaw person from 1980... I bought my first Stihl awhile back and it's been a great saw saw.. I have always run Oregon or Winsdor bars.. I greased the sprocket nose after use each day.. The light weight Stihl bar is a laminated bar, hollow.. The bar rails showed wear after a year where Oregon bars didn't.. Both dealers told me pretty much the same thing.. That sprocket on the nose gets more than enough bar oil and does not need grease.. Stihl is made in VA from what the dealer told me with some components from Germany.. Hope that helps .. Oh I did replace the Stihl bar with an Oregon bar which added more weight out front.. In the passed I have got 15 years service from a bar. I have my bars reground from time to time to extend their life, true up the bar rails in the grinding..

Both Sthil and Husky are excellent saws, I have owned both. I find Stihl harder to start but more reliable. At the end of the day it comes down to buying the brand where you can get the best repair and customer service in your local town. My local town is Sthil and so I now own 2 sthil saws. If I lived close to a Husky town I would probably be owning 2 Husky's. Both manufacturers are good.

I've always owned Stihl, but most my family are loggers and we have several brands in our family. My input is....Husky is lighter, and runs at a higher RPM.
Stihl is heavier and more durable and has more torque.
    It's all user opinion.

    Great deal on the Stihl!!😀😀
I do believe the reason the Stihl pulls over easier is that it has a larger diameter recoil spool than the Husky. The bigger the diameter the easier they pull. They are also much easier on the life of the rope.
    Take care and work safe!!😀😀

I was a Husqvarna man for years. I used them cutting logs. I went to the 044 Stihl and never looked back . Even after I become a paraplegic. I bought the Stihl 391 like the one you have and it works great. About the grease hole. The tip will last longer with out grease. dirt and grit sticks to the grease . Without it the bar oil will keep it clear

I've run both Stihl and Husky for close to 35 years. Each has their strengths and weaknesses. I did have a little 192 Stihl that had some sort of spring assist in the recoil, to help start it. It really worked well but they discontinued it the following year. You may have something similar with your saw. And don't count out Echo saws, I just purchased 3 within the last year and I'm thoroughly impressed. I'd never say that 10 years ago. The smallest Echo only weighs 5 pounds and has good power.

Great deal. I got the MS311 because it was cheaper at the dealer. It replaced my 038 AV Super that was 29 years old. The MS311 has the decompression button for starting and following instructions it will start cold with about five pulls, a burp, flick the choke switch up one and pull and it’ll start. I’ve cut a bunch of oak now with the MS311 and Stihl works on torque while Husky works on RPMs. On a 24-30 inch oak let the saw do the work. The new saw isn’t as powerful as the 038 Super but letting it do the work gets it done.

  • @JD-ct1lj

That's a GREAT deal! I was out the door with 20" bar/hard case/6 pk of mix and a 2 yr warranty for around $750 (2012). You may be interested how mine is running now that's it's been 8 years. It has performed flawlessly for me and seldom takes more than 3 pulls to be up and running (starting the 3 count after the compression button pops up). Admittedly it's gotten casual use (and some BIG trees) and I'm only on the 2nd chain and just recently changed the air filter for grins ($8 on Amazon). I usually run/store it with 95 octane premix gas, a little more $$ but I'll use regular gas and mix for a long session, but the premix gas stores great over a few months and is ready to go at a moment's notice. YEAH, it's a beast weight wise for a home saw. You must be a bigger guy, you were making it look light in your hands when branching that log, like the little MS170 in my hands. Kudos on your purchase.

My issue was i could never get them started on my own unless we had been running them for a bit. I had 2 older male cousins or my dad to help get the saws going for me... I bought a pair of chaps after slicing my knee. Couldn't get out of the woods till evening. Started with paper towels and scotch tape to stop blood. Got out of woods n used butterfly bandages. Got to the ER before dark. After five hours in ER they said to me we have good news n bad news. Good news is your next. Bad is if we use novacaine you're gonna b here alot longer. I said just sew it up doc. He let me put in some of the stitches myself. Good stuff to know. Anyway. I bought safety chaps. Saved a cut on my leg but then you have to replace them. So recommend pair saved my leg again. On my third pair now. I've been cutting for over forty years now.

The stihl is 64.5cc. Its top of the line for ranch saws and that doesn't mean everything bigger is a pro saw, they make smaller cc saws that are professional grade, like the 362, it's a 60 cc saw, but way lighter than the 391, better materials I reckon

Stihl made everywhere like johndeere. I have an ms362 (pro saw) and have great luck with it, ive found oregon chains to last longer and keep edge longer. The stihl chains do oil better and run faster but curf is narrower so it needs filed more. Open gas cap slow or u will get sprayed( issue with the caps). My stihl did have decomp button but i removed it with a plug. Ive heard horror stories about the stem falling in. If ur saw doesnt already have it, stihl makes a cushioned pull cord handle that makes it easier on the fingers. Stihl consumer saws also have light duty A/V springs and mounts so dont pull and reef on saw too hard if u get it stuck. Husky makes good pro saws but consumer saws are now basically a poulin . Hopefully this is useful

    Hi,
New Stihls run an elastostart pull cord that reduces strain on the wrist by winding a spring type mechanism as you pull, that’s why it feels like lower compression.
The new Husqvarnas also now run a sealed bearing in the bar tip, which needs no grease for the life of the bar, it’s called their x-cut range. Hollow bar inside also, to reduce weight. ( doesnt need grease before bar will wear out).
New Husky’s also have flip top fuel/oil caps and other features like push stop that returns to run position on release.

That's great, thanks for the info. I love that elastostart pull!

Nice score on the saw!! Just a thought, you should pick up a pair of chaps. They might save an injury one day. You are out there alone.

I have a Stihl and a Husqvarna. The Husky has a 20 inch blade and is bigger than the Stihl which is 16 inches. I use the Husky for dropping big trees. The Stihl I use for limbing. Having a backup saw is good for when you accidentally pinch the otber one. I like the Stihl better only because there is a shop that services them close by. Good video! I didn't know where the saws were made.

I’ve noticed that a brand new saw will have less compression versus after
Running several tanks of fuel I just got my first Husqvarna 359 and 137 I like the 359 I did a head gasket delete and ported the cylinder. ported the muffler tuned it up and I’m very happy with it I’ve always ran stihl and I cut timber here on the Oregon Coast I’ll tell u if u know how to tune up a saw and truly know how to run it not just start it and make a few cuts I run saw 10-12 hours 7 days a week and the only saw I was not happy with was a ms170 until I did a lot of work to it but now the carburetor keeps going bad in it those non tunable carbs are a pos

I think stihl calls it ergostart? I have a small one for the backyard, ms250c I think, then a Med and larger husky and the little stihl is usually my go to saw for around the house. Those oil and gas caps are awesome as well as the system to remove and tighten the bar and chain. Also in Maine!! Keep up the great vids! Snow on the way Friday!!

Same weight as my MS311, 13.6lbs. with just the powerhead (2lbs lighter than my MS461) The 311 is 59cc 4.2bhp, the 391 is 63.1cc 4.4bhp. Performance wise the 391 should feel very similar to the older professional grade MS360-362 saws. It should do great with a 20inch bar or so on it. Stihl recommends p to a 20, but it could probably pull a 25" bar and chain in softer wood ok. The 391 has the Intellicarb on it, which adjusts itself automatically to compensate for lost airflow when the air filter starts getting dirty. I've seen a few videos from well known saw builders/porting wizards that say the 391 has a few minor upgrades the other saws in the farm and ranch range don't have like the carb and beffier crank and conecting rod, better crank bearings etc.Overall it should be a great saw for anything short of professional falling/logging. Stihlusa.com has all the specs for their current saws, and you can compare them side by side. My 311 and 461 both had "Made in Germany" stickers on them. My 461 is only about a month old. I believe most of the saws being sold in the US that use the M-tronic (newer computer controlled carb and ignition timing) are being built in the VA plant. They are also making bars and even the plastic covers here in the US now. Supposedly the majority of parts used ot build the saws here are being manufactured here in the US too.

I can’t switch from my Husqvarna saws my dealer support is unmatched, he’s a factory trained mechanic. My saws never needed repairs but if they ever did my dealer support is there.

The professional saws are still made in Germany. The 391 is still considered a farm and ranch saw.
