We had this system when i was a kid. Loved it. The overlays were genius, made playing complex games much easier.
Loved the dungeon type games on it. Had a great time with them.
This was my parents very first game system. I still have it. I haven't plugged it in since the 90s though. Very cool and retro system. I was very happy to see a re-make of this system in toys r us a few weeks ago. Glad to see kids might be able to play these systems today if they realize how boring new games are getting and get back to the roots.
These sure became highly collectible quickly, people are paying like 90$ used and $160 new. They winded up cancelling future models so these are actually pretty rare.
Because Keith Robinson died and Tommy Tallirico at Keith's funeral talked his widow into selling Keith's share of Intellivison/INTV corp. And supposedly Tommy wanted way too much money to license the Intellivison library to AT games.

Interestingly after COVID ended as an emergency the cost of the Flashback dropped substantially and now they sell used for $40.
My friend had an intellivision. It's a really nice system and this flashback is something i would like to have.
Bought one thia week. Totally a blast. My son and i played Snafu for almost an hour. Dungeons and Dragons is now called Crown of Kings so thats awesome to get that as part of this. I miss Deadly Discs though. Good review!
I'm so glad you're still around!
My aunt bought me one of these consoles in '80... I new it was expensive but as I told her Atari was crap and she didn't want me getting killed in the streets of my barrio in L.A. But, I was guesstimating that it was a 16 bit and yeah, you proved me right. Thanks. After owning this game, I began buying all the classic arcade machine to start my vending company at age 15... I owned all the popular machines found in any arcade.
All three Flashback systems are all available through Bed Bath & Beyond in Canada, $49.99.
Thanks for that!
The Intellivision was the first video game console that I remember playing as a kid. I would purchase this, but I really wish it had the option to use cartridges. There are some games like Beauty and the Beast that I would like to play on it. Thanks Gamester81 for reviewing this!
Thank you so much for having this review. I was in the process of building an all in one mame cabinet and was running into issues finding replacement intellivision controllers. (I have an original II system but both of the controllers have issues.) So, if I buy this flashback kit, the USB adapter for the PC, (re-assign the buttons in the emulator; it is like mapping keys on a keyboard), I will have working controllers. Thanks for making me aware of this, you have made my weekend.
I cant wait...49 going on 15....getting this for xmas! Slam Dunk basketball and baseball with my brother and friends...used to play it for hours.
Great video review! This is available in Canada; Rob MaximumRD did an unboxing video of the Intellivision Flashback, as well as the Colecovision Flashback.
David Halligan Great to know, thanks.
I got one in Dollar General on clearance for only $12! Epic find!
I used to love the Intellivision. It was a great system. I'm surprised that my brother's thumbs and my own survived owning it. lol
Picked mine up a week ago at a local Toys R Us. Feels very close to the original I remember having growing up. I like that the controllers aren't built in, I always hated that feature. Good review always nice to see true retro systems getting some love even if they are remakes
hopefully at games makes more of these. cause the older systems are becoming harder to find for a decent price
They lost licensing; in fact they have lost a lot of licensing recently. Sega, Coleco and Intellivision backed out of their contracts.
The Intellivision was available in Canada. My wife's Canadian and she had one as a kid. Her best friend had a ColecoVision.
My sister bought me this plug n play console for Christmas, and I really like the ports of the intellivision games. Overall I give in 8/10 stars. My parents had this when I was a kid, I use to love playing the space invader clone. We also had the Atari 2600, I use to play it a lot when I was 5, until I got my NES for Christmas of 1990.
Hey John .. The Magnavox Odyssy 2 I think was the first with speech in a console. if not a console the TI 99 for a was the first have speech in it's games and the first with speech recognition with the MBX expansion module.. I picked up the Coleco and Intellivision flashback a few weeks ago pretty decent.
I see people taking the piss out of this system for not including licensed games like Burgertime or Tron Deadly Disks, but consider the constraints they are working under, they can only sell the games they have the rights to, and while some of us would be willing to pay significantly more for the system to include it, they have to price this at a price that's commercially viable.
I think a far worse problem is the fact that the AC adapter plugs into the SIDE of the system, and at the FRONT no less, which makes this system a huge pain to set up in any normal entertainment system, especially when the AV leads come out the back.
It seems like the AC adapter port coming out the side was a decision made to allow the system to be smaller, but the thing is, nobody could have complained if the system was slightly larger, they made it a nice compact little unit, the common sense of having the AV lead come out the back would have made this a far better product.
The AV cables and controller cables aught to each be at least a foot longer.
If this had slightly longer AV and controller cables, and if the power lead plugged into the back of the system, I'd gladly would have paid an extra 10 or 15 dollars, as this is something I'd plan to hold on to for the rest of my life, but as it is, its a great way to play a good selection of intellivision games with authentic controllers without having to invest the time, space, and money in building a collection, which is something my lifestyle doesn't allow for.
You can buy a adapter cord so this flashback controller works on the Intellivision model II. Great video !!
I briefly owned an INTV II in 1984, which was a fun system for the limited number of games I got to play on it. I mostly got it for the TRON games, but frankly, only TRON: Deadly Discs was worth getting and playing. I would like to see if someone could try installing a cartridge slot on the INTV Flashback unit, if it could really play games straight from the cartridges themselves.
Growing up with Sega, Nintendo, and TG16 I could never really get into anything before those. It's nice to see 3rd party consoles being made to replicate them and NOT being shit.
Great review John. I would love to get both of the new Flashbacks.
great video! i just got a real intellivision before learning about this. question. are the controllers the same scale? i have some of theses games and wonder if the inserts that come with this would work with an original controller..
It's exactly the same scale (looks literally the same) and the overlays are interchangeable.
Nice review. I've seen this at Family Dollar for $40. I'm still on the fence if I want to get this but seeing your review kinda makes want to pick it up. Thanks again.
Awesome review! I never knew the Colecovison has a 16-bit microprocessor. And I love your shirt lol
Here in Canada the only place I could find these flashback consoles was at Bed Bath and Beyond!! They retail for $CAN49.95. Brings back a lot of memories!
I went to Dollar General today and got the ColecoVision flashback and this for 20 bucks a piece, the Intellivision came with all of the stuff that was in this one.
I've never really been a collector for these plug and plays but I do want the coleco vision one and intellivision one as well
Good review. If you had one of these and enjoyed it, or enjoyed playing on a friends computer, this is a definite get. Some great games in here, Night Stalker, Astrosmash, Shark! Shark! - all exceptional gameplay for the day. They did a great job on this unit. Would pay $60 for a unit that had HDMI out, as the built in cables are a bit short for many applications. Had to order an extension. Also, on mine the power supply literally came apart unplugging it from the wall. I was able to repair but that part is extremely cheap.
Controllers are amazing - as good as, and in some ways better. Side buttons are much better on this one.
Games play well, played Astrosmash for the first time in probably 30 years, what a friggin' blast. Shark! Shark! - aweseome.
Downside - some games REALLY need the overlays and are not included. They mentioned you could buy more, but that is not available yet. Supposedly, Sam's Club is going to have a version with more overlays... the pictures in the manual are at least helpful in that regard.
Looking forward to the INTV Flashback 2 with HDMI and more games!
Still have my original, but can't set it up anymore.
I wish I knew this came out when it did. Definitely would have bought it.
Looking forward to the intellivision Amico.
Really good review and history. Great job!
Having loved my Intellivision as a kid, I'm surprised I didn't hear about this until now. I'm definitely considering getting one of these.
Yeah, me too.
Did you buy one before they became super inflated in price from collectors?
Always wanted to try an Intellivision or Colecovision, Thank you for the awesome review i was unsure of the quality of the flashback consoles but after this I'm definitely making a purchase.
Its just too good of a deal to pass.
I'm sure they are more reliable than the originals with newer integrated electronics. However without a cartridge slot to play the ones not included, it didn't sell me.
I got one of these for 25 bucks on clearance. Totally worth it.
Great video! Very thorough and awesome commentary.
That bomb diffusing game looks interesting. That type of game deserves an update.
It was a lot of fun, and real challenging. I remember how rewarding it was define diffuse the thing, the victory screen at the end. As a kid, of course I wanted to just play the shoot em ups and sport games, but when I finally got around to playing this one it grew on me, and really was fun.
I wonder if you're ever going to review that voice module thing for the IV.
BEE SEVINTEIN BAOOOMR!
I want this. Dollar General has one additional game called 2 player baseball, a Dollar General exclusive only same price $40 for the system with 61 built in games versus 60 sold elsewhere. They sold out, lady said they were gone 5 minute after store opened.
I hated the controls for the Intellvision Lives collection for PS2, but loved the controls for the 25 game Plug and Play controller. I'm hoping the controls will feel much more natural than the other two ports of Intellivision games.
I wish the Intellivision Flashback had more to offer (like play card support). I'm disappointed the controllers are hardwired too (not sure why they decided to go that route).
Great review, John.
*****
Yeah, you're right.....but they aren't compatible with the original Intellivision. :/
***** There was a miss-communication between the people in PR of AT Games who talked to Keith Robinson (the owner of Intellivision Productions) and the people working on the production of the system. It WAS meant to work with original hardware. Paul over at the Intellivisionaries Podcast made some adapters for the controllers, which he sold at CGE. They sold out within an hour. :p
He's currently making more of them, and there's a waiting list.
BfDelano
That's pretty awesome. Hopefully, John can make a quick update video on those adapters...if he gets them.
Love your videos Man. Keep up the good work!
I bought the game system last week. I had to take it back.
"Tower of Doom" (a Dungeons & Dragons-style action game) was one of my favorite games from the original Intellivision run. So when I chose "Tower..." as a game to play, I figured I'd slip right back into a familiar setting and give it a go.
There's a problem with the gameplay. A big problem.
No matter what character I picked, no matter what "dungeon" I selected, your character starts off completely immune to all traps. Also, regardless of what kind of monster appears on the screen, you cannot confront it in hand to hand combat (or vice versa), nor can you offer it a bribe. (the face-to-face screen never happens-- the monster just runs right past you). You can shoot it from afar with a distance weapon, but that's it. Level after level, this was my reality.
I tried hitting reset, then choosing the game again. Same results. Twice. Same results. Third time. Same results. Let's try turning the system power off (pausing first), then turning the power on again, then choosing the game. Same results.
Uh-oh. This isn't good.
In fact, it's downright disappointing, and rather infuriating.
I can't use this system.
For now, I'll stop short of throwing the entire system under the bus. I will grant that maybe-- maybe-- there was something "off" about this model that I purchased. But, as I said, "Tower..." was one of my favorite games; "bargain" price or not, a glitch like that is unacceptable to me. I'm going to have to pass on this, until I get some definitive feedback on what's going on with other consumers.
Yes, i've read this a number of times. I'm pretty sure its a defect with all the INTL FB systems. Shame, its a great game that really highlights how good the system could be when a game has good programming.
I'm still going to get one eventually for NightStalker and the renamed dungeons and dragons games though.
I've even got an Intellivision and about 20 games still, but prefer to just pop in the OG Xbox Intellivision Lives compilation instead - if you aren't going for the original console I'd say go for that (the games are damn cheap and way easier to find boxed/complete than Atari games - it's uncanny how many people saved everything, probably because of the overlays).
I wish all these Flashback consoles, mainly Atari and Intellivsion, would include some of the better homebrew games such as Christmas Carol vs. the Ghosts of Christmas Presents and Stonix for this Flashback; Oystron, Hunchy II, and Toyshop Trouble for Atari Flashback would be awesome as well.
thanks for the upload, I ended up grabbing one of these flashback units... not bad 💕
kids these days don't even know what an intellivision is lol
C L 0 S E R I’m 11 and I do. My first console was a ds
John is rougher than heyal on those poor consoles lol
alot of my fave retro gaming youtubers do panel shows at conventions how come ive not seen you do any, gamester? would love too see you do a panel
No Lock'N'Chase :(
I liked the review but I would have liked to know the difference between the several editions of Intv flashback
There are only three 'editions'. The standard one with 60 games, the Dollar General version that also lumps in the 2-player Baseball, and a special Collector Edition that has the 61 games, plus the complete set of keypad overlays (not just the 10 or so that come with the other versions).
Thanks for the information!
I've contacted AtGames to try and find out if they have plans for a UK release of this and the Colecovision Flashback. They haven't replied :-(
Auto racing and Poker / Blackjack I believe were the games that came with.
no Bump N Jump?!?! pretty cool, so is the Colecovision set up. for $40 bucks it looks like you can't go wrong.
Bumb N Jump is a licensed game. Keith can't obtain the rights for these titles without dishing out a **** ton of money to the current rights holders. He tried adding Tron Deadly Discs to one of the older plug n play units with the Recognizer changed to a different design (that and the name were the only things copyrighted in the entire game), and people hated it.
really wished the amico would have happened. so much potential.
They should have included plastic overlays for every game. Any news on an Intellivision Flashback 2?
Cancelled and also on eBay Intellivision company sells the other overlays for the rest of the games at $17.
This looks the better unit of the two, only by a small margin, due to the controllers being the same size and the overlays fitting etc. Still it would have been much better to get the controller wiring right (even though that doesn't help Intellivision model I owners anyway) and the menu should have been far better.
Saying that I wouldn't mind getting both of them, so hopefully they see distribution outside of the USA and Canada in the future.
For 40 bucks this is a really near system. If I see one I'll try it out. Thanks for the infos and the video.
What's the sound like on these? Close to the original? And mate geez but you're heavy handed. lol
Should I get the intellivision or colecovision flashback
Both
First Collecovision, now Intellivision. As with the former, I will wait for Intellivision Flashback 2 so you can mod it to play IV carts.
Cool system, never got a chance to play one of those.
Xmas gifts this year, flashbacks!
Hey john, they don't have these in Canada. I have to order my Colecovision flash back online. I wasn't impressed with it 😞
Good console at a good price, but I think the absence of the really good Activision titles like Worm Whomper and Dreadnaught Factor and Imagic games like Beauty and the Beast and Demon Attack are missed opportunities. I don't think I'm the target audience, though, it's probably geared toward adults who have not been following retro games and probably aren't as familiar with the deeper library titles so they'll probably never notice. The inclusion of Thin Ice is nice at least as well as getting AD&D in there by changing the names - although some people seem to be confused and unaware of this, maybe that could have been mentioned? Enjoyed your review, John.
Now we need a really good virtual boy flashback.. It would have full color, and it was like the PS3.
First? What about the ti-99/4a? It was 16 bit and had a speech synthesizer.
The main problem I have with this is that you can't plug in the original games. You're limited to the 60 built in games, and while that may seem like a lot, many of them are crappy sports games and educational "filler" type games. There are maybe 10 games on here worth playing. No Lock N' Chase, Commando, Burgertime, Tron Deadly Discs, Beauty and the Beast, Atlantis, etc. I understand it's a licensing issue, but then at least allow the old games to be plugged in, the way some of the other retro consoles do.
Hope they bring out a flash back 2 for the Mattel intervision
They sadly lost licensing once Tommy bought the Intellivision company.
Excellent. Thanks dood!
i don't find Stone Age Gamer link in your description :(
OMG that bible buffet t shirt must be as rare as the game haha
Loved this as a kid. We would play MLB for hours and hours. Poor graphics compared to today's baseball games but the gameplay was amazing.
Hi John, thanks for the video! I'm thinking of getting my step father one of these for Christmas as he had the original. Do you think this is a worthy gift for an original Intellivision owner?
Cool shit i need this
Good job john keep it up!!
John do you think the market is becoming over saturated with these types of consoles?
Streetwhore8te4 I think these systems are good in a way to shed some light on older consoles. The price is decent if you can find one at retail price, and the game selection is very broad.
and do you think the market is most saturated with smartphones and tablets with seedy games?, ´cause some people like me have these nostalgia you know, these consoles arent made in deep country with crappy materials like 1001 in 1 or something like that, cheers
If anything we need MORE of these flashback type consoles. I'd love to see a master system and SG-1000 flashback!
I have an old Intellivision somewhere in the attic.
It has crown of kings, sea battle, shark shark, tower of doom, and utopia that is awesome. the only thing missing is microsurgeon.
I had a intellivision back in the day my mum loved shark shark ,
Id like to see a sega master system hd flashback and an hd Atari 7800 flashback.
im 17 and I find this kind of stuff to be fascinating kids theses days don't seem to appreciate their gaming console ancestors probably du to listening to the angry video game nerd
The intelevision should,ve be the intelevision flashback instead in terms of design because that flashback version does contain detachable controllers, inlike the original one.
Much respect to the old school
The Family Dollar here has the Sega one and the Coleco Vision
I found these at the dollar general store today for 39.95, but there was only 3 of them and they had all been opened.... so I was shat out of luck... :(
Was my first console. Jesus I'm old . . .
Hi dude nice video dude!
Gamester81 Can the Intellivision Flashback controller work on the Colecovision Flashback or the other way around?
I had a friend that owned a Intellivision and we played this game all the time, Adventure I think, where you played a knight and you could only hold one thing at a time, a key, rope, sword, ect. Is that game on here?
The game you speak of was actually on the Atari 2600 :)
You're right, it is. I swear that I played a game like it with those funny controllers.
Steve Wozniak created a working version of Breakout for Atari, but Atari did not use it. Atari created their own version.
B-17 Bomber
"Watch out for flak!" :)
The fish game and night stalker were fun .
And to think in 2019 that flash back console would be worth $200 brand new.
Insane should have bought one when they where cheap
Yes, even used they cost 2 to 3x more than they were originally new. Demand is super high.
thx might pick one up
Not enough overlays. They need a release with the Activision games on it.
I was wondering, does this work with regular hd tv's? or does it only work for retro tv's or whatever the old tv's are called because I am thinking of getting one.
You can buy a AV to HDMI upscaler, so yes.
I hope they make a snes flashback !
There’s already one which is made by Nintendo
Mattel Electronics Presents: BEEE-SEVENTEEEEN BAWWWWMER!!!
Best Intellivision game is "Sydney Hunter and the Magic Cactus."
