Mr. Graves is the man for all seasons when it comes to the tenor, the alto too! He produces the sound that so many of us have in our heads but we just can't quite make it come out like he can. He plays with conviction. He sees the road ahead and he can follow it and arrive at the destination in a fashion that we can appreciate. It flows easy and gently...no screams, growls and all the cheap tricks frequently over used to attempt to showcase technical wizardry ,but it isn't enjoyable or listenable. Such a pleasure to find peace with the music listening to the lower register, not tension with over used altissimo. We love him because he speaks for a lot us...you can feel his kind and gentle soul. Thanks to him and his son for sharing his gift to us!
i would think his use of open chamber low baffle with not so large tip opening 97 maybe with 7 star .that ottolink seems to have more projection mid register but harder to hit b flat low. the berg larsen seems to play warmer in the low b flat .I think so many try to impress with tip opening size and reed strength. might explain why the bigger tip opening mouthpieces seem more avaliable online.Mr. Graves is such a master
Listening and watching Mr. Graves gives us very good examples on the technical side (breathing, tone, phrasing, etc.). But more important yet is the concentration and joy of playing. Thanks Mr. Graves!
I was browsing TH-cam to hear versions of this song on sax and I was thinking to myself it would be so awesome if Aubra Graves did a version of this song; and to my amazement you have it uploaded. Its always a pleasure to hear you play and thank you for uploading this.
I agree. players today don't embrace the lower register of the tenor. Everyone wants to sound like coltrane and brecker..Time to bring back hawkins, gordon, webster etc..
While I'm at it I should also add...I mean...I'm a minute and 30 in and I'm like what is it, is it the angle of the camera, the lighting, I mean I just heard this man's soul. East of the sun jazzsaxtenor, it kills me.it kills me. just thought you should know.

Aubra never forgotten

Great music from the Graves family just the best of TH-cam.
Gracias.

Request for 'Round Midnight" Aebersold vol 40 track #2 disk 1
I might be out of line here but I much prefer the tone of the Conn compared to the Mark VII.
Fine!!!
Would you tell us what recording equiptment you use please. Would love to try to reproduce that wonderful reverb and clarity. Thanks
accouswk I think he’s using fairly basic equipment to record. Definitely an sm57 mic
