    Great, simple illustration of the difference between inter and intraframe compression. Also, the practical demonstration of the difference in editing performance is pretty dramatic! Great video.

    I've been transcoding to prores since starting out on FCP7 and this video describes why in such a way I never could.

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally understandable. ProRes has been a dream codec since the earlier versions of FCP. It took a bit of researching to understand what was going on under the hood. thanks for watching.

    Thanks for this tutorial.
    I have a question which I am sure many of the viewers might be having. You did not check the Maximum Render Quality and Maximum Bit Depth boxes.
    When do we really use them? What do they exactly do? There is a lot of confusion about these two in general.
    Rule of thumb being you get better quality when you tick them.
    Can you help. Thanks.

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah... good question. Maximum bit depth deals with Raw footage or footage that is 32-bit. If the footage isn't raw, it's typically 8-bit or 10-bit. Maximum render is a high-quality resize operation that should be used when outputting to a different frame size from your sequence. It can reduce aliasing (jagged edges) when resizing images but is of no use when outputting to the same frame size.

    Re: the space... isn't there a way to make proxies closer to the original video file's size (or smaller) without losing any of the quality? Pro Res is GIGANTIC. Can you do another video using a less-huge file type, but still getting the same vibe? I did this a few years ago but I don't remember the format I used for the proxies. Editing was a breeze and the files were like less than half the size of the original clips. Thanks!

    Question - I just received a show that was originally cut on FCP7, and on an old Mac, so the codec isn't supported on my new 2022 Premiere & Mac. I'm transcoding to ProRes 422 HQ, but the old timeline (now in Premiere) keeps linking to the old NG codec clips - leaving me with only audio. Do I need to delete the original clips, or just create a new folder with all the new transcoded clips and direct the linking to that? Not sure of the workflow steps. Thanks. 🙏🏽

    I just purchased a M2 Mac mini 16GB. What I find strange is any mp4 (h.264) footage I add to the timeline it is a breeze to edit. scrubs through it no problem in 1/1 Quality. For a test I encoded some mp4s to Apple proRes HQ 422 in Adobe media Encoder. When I add these .mxf files to my timeline and try and scrub through them, to my surprise it is really slow and glitchy compared with the original MP4 files. Any idea why this would be? Thanks.

  • @JacksonvilleRealEstate
    @JacksonvilleRealEstate 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! One question though. Is the rendering time impacted when exporting or rendering the intermediate (mezzanine) video back to H.264?

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With computers getting faster and faster, this video is becoming a bit less relevant. The software and hardware keeps getting better at handling h.264 files. Once rendered to ProRes, it seems to speed the process up rendering to other formats such as h.264.

    • @chinfat

      That is the propriety Premiere method. I use that on occasion. The old-school method is better if you are going to send clips and your edit to different software (such as effects, CGI, sound mixing, and coloring software) The proprietary method is great, only is you are completely finishing your project within Premiere Pro. My next 2 episodes, E12 & E13, I show proprietary and old-school methods of Proxy workflow.

    Since transcoded footage is like 10 times larger in size, are they safe to deleted when a project is finished. ?And if edits need to be made and the project file is revisited, we can relink them to the smaller H264 originals?

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They could be discarded. Yes. I haven't thought of that before. But yeah, you could relink them to the original h.264 files as long as they have the same name and timecode.

    Is there a way to do this and encode the footage into an uncompressed type at like a really low resolution? For my purposes exporting time is fine waiting for a bit, so if it's possible to work with an uncompressed low quality version and then replace the video file with the compressed one right before exporting the file so I can keep drive space down, that would be ideal

    Learning about Transcoding from your video really helped a lot! I am wondering, is it possible to use ProRes 422 Proxy, as I find myself having big ass files from using ProRes 422, will I get the same smoothness from playbacks?

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. But keep in mind that ProRes Proxy does not maintain the full resolution. It will say that the resolution is the same size, but it is duplicated pixels.

    This may be an obvious question but after doing the cut, if I still have to color using Lumetri, then I do so after linking up the original footage correct? Then, still have to just deal w any lag all over again correct?

      Those are older options that refers to the rendering of effects, like gaussian blur. Since a lot of the effects have been re-programmed to use GPU or CPU, check-marking those boxes have become more and more unnecessary. In fact, here is a good article on the subject: larryjordan.com/articles/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-when-to-use-maximum-render-quality/

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really just depends on how robust your system is. If it can't handle the footage, transcoding or creating proxies may be necessary.

  • @missioncreekstyle3814
    @missioncreekstyle3814 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One other cool thing. Once you transcode footage to ProRes, you can use it to output faster via smart rendering.

    • @chinfat
      @chinfat  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is smart rendering an option? Or are you saying Premiere/Media Encoder exports out faster cause it's ProRes. Just curious.

    • @missioncreekstyle3814
      @missioncreekstyle3814 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chinfat Yeah, ProRes is smart rendering capable, so if you keep a ProRes pipeline throughout the editing process (preview files set to ProRes, as well), the export is much faster. It's because you are only copying the media, you are not encoding it. You just have to check the box to use previews when exporting, and it's very fast. It's one of the main reasons I transcode.
