    I've had my CX-5 11 years - it's still going strong! It get serviced regularly and I've never had a minutes problem with it. I haven't been true 4 x4 driving but I've been off road a few times and the car gives me a good secure feeling because a normal 2WD would have let me down.

    I bought the CX-5 touring and have put 17,000 miles on it. I have had none of the mentioned transmission problems. I was actually surprised at how smooth it shifts. The only problem I have ever had with it was the driver seat and it's not really a problem but more of a mystery. 3 times I have found my seat fully reclined when I opened the door. I have no idea how or why it has happened. Tried to recreate it with the seat belt but no luck.

      I think you may be right. 3 years and 77,000 miles later and still very odd things happen. Developed a problem after my Mazda was borrowed to give a stranded motorist a jump start. I'd shut engine off, control panel lights and radio would stay on. Would have to restart and shut down several times. Then computers went wonky. Check engine light came on. Went to mechanic for computer code read out. Was getting code for failing transmission. Power locks/windows quit working. When mechanic looked at engine he found the top was off my battery but water level still good. Top was replaced and all problems were over. Have not had a problem since. I think my Mazda was trying to get my attention?

    I have a 2014 FWD sport 6AT and I love it. I haven't noticed any transmission not wanting to shift or shifting too early. I strictly drive in "D" mode. I would recommend CX5 to anyone who have been staying away from CUV/SUV because of poor mpg's.

    I've watched dozens of these reviews and everyone loves the transmission, quick and solid all the time. And the ones I've test drove with over 3000 miles on them were great as well. I would have to say this particular car is having a trans problem and needs to be looked at.

      Funnily enough, while I was test driving the car I accidentally put it in 'manual' mode (basically allowing me to change gears manually despite it being auto). At first, I thought the transmission was horrible until I realized it was in the wrong mode. As soon as I switched over to automatic I found myself happily driving it.

      Who hired this guy to test drive cars? It's pretty clear he didn't want to like this vehicle from the get-go.
      I agree with you, engine and tranny are Mazda strong points. If I wanted excess power I'd buy a Cayenne.

    I appreciate this review. Have been wavering on the CX-5. Not test driven yet. Curious why in the reviews of SUVs, there isn't a standard visual measure of cargo space, say, how many standard paper grocery bags fit. Or how many standard size suitcases can be fit/stacked in. Or, once a standard stroller is in, how much space is left over. Or it would've been great to see a shot of the stuff your family packed in the back for this weekend road trip! A visual like this would help just as much as, or more than, the cu. ft. number. With the angle of the rear door different on each vehicle, it's very confusing just how much space there is. If we all lived in an area where we could easily test drive all the cars we want to, it would be different. But I would guess there are lot of people scouring TH-cam for help choosing which cars to narrow down to, who would appreciate this addition to a review. Especially when it's a comparison review. Just a suggestion, but it sure could be helpful. Thanks!

    i have the same gripe with my 2014 cx5 grand touring, transmission hunts for high gear at all time. it rides in 4th gear in town at 20mph. this wouldn't be an issue if it was willing to downshift quickly, but unless you sink the pedal to the floor it doesn't want to do it. so i avoid this issue by keeping in tiptronic mode. In the end - small price to pay for otherwise a pretty great car that's fun to drive.

    • @baddriversofmontana8811
      @baddriversofmontana8811 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking to get the exact same model soon. How do you keep it in "tiptronic mode"? If that's really the only issue you have with it, it sounds like a great car. Do you have any other issues? Would you recommend it? (buying used, 50K miles, so does it "wear out" at all?)

  • @bigred1120

    I have a 2014 touring AWD CX5. I think it is the best car I've ever owned. The lane changing sensors are sensitive, but it doesn't bother me. Transmissions hasn't been an issue, generally, but it doesn't seem as smooth as it was now that I have nearly 100k miles on it. The only minor things I don't like about my CX5 are the Bose sound system surprisingly sucks, especially the rear speakers. Wind noise is really loud with the sunroof open at high speeds. I assume that is pretty common with most sunroofs though. I don't know this is my first car that had one.

    I prefer a transmission that doesn't downshift at every slight increase in throttle. Especially these days with lots of gear ratios in automatic transmissions, I find it frustrating when the transmission is busy shifting all the time when I'm just trying to gain a little speed. I like the fact that the 6-speed in this Mazda tends to hold the gear a bit longer instead of shifting right away.

  • @alexsiul1142
    @alexsiul1142 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    the transmission thing has always been there for saving fuel in any Mazda vehicles, especially skyactiv models.
    you just have to put it in full manual mode and shift by yourself sometimes and it become relatively quick in the class

    I also have the 2014 cx5 with the 2.5 liter engine. I have had no problems with the transmisson. I think it is a great car and have had it for six months. Lots of pep too. The leading consumer mag. rates it very high.

    You ARE too close to the vehicle behind you, it's telling you that you're cutting off the other drivers. You should wait to see the other car in your center-mounted rearview mirror before changing to be courteous. Try the SMITH driving system.
    I have no transmission issues in my mazda 6. The automatic to me drives like how I would pilot a manual - leaving it in gear as long as possible and changing down or up as little as needed to get adequate power. I love the fact it doesn't buzz and clank down too many gears just to pass someone. For example, in a manual I might shift from 5th down to 4th to pass another driver with plenty of power, while many conventional automatics will over-downshift to 2nd or 3rd unnecessarily. This mazda transmission won't overdownshift unless you floor it, which is very appropriate.

    I so disagree about the transmission, Just tested a 2015 touring for 30 miles today, great ramp to highway 70mph time, like others said I tried just pressing down gas pedal to make it shift If you want to pass DUH real simple
    so fun to drive and Steering is so direct a feel, sweeet...I also think the Seats are very comfortable and adjustable, especially compared to my 2014 Subaru Forester turbo...
    Infotainment center Is good enough for me, go check out the standard one in the Forester and you will LOVE this one
    This car is so steady on the highway, not like the more truckish forester

    We have a AWD SUV also (different brand) but we don't hardly ever drive in snow or offroad. In WA state it doesn't snow much. . I have owned GTI and MINI Cooper S and they were practical but the rear seats didn't have much leg room. Small wagons like Mazda 3 probably don't have much rear passenger room either. Cubic feet wise CX5 beats most wagons probably. AWD would have been just extra spending for no real good use for me. And AWD gets less mpg.

    What is the market share of Mazda vehicles in US ? to my surprise compared to the number of Honda CRV , Rav 4 and Other SUV's I spot during my daily 2 hours commute on free way. I hardly spot Mazda's let alone CX5's. Why is so ? any thoughts I do like the car but just skeptical why majority of people don't prefer this vehicle.

  • @columw6582
    @columw6582 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love the concept of the Mazda5, but not the execution. The idea of a smaller minivan (with the all-important sliding doors), a 4-cyl and a manual with three rows is amazing. My wife's (a 2008 model) has been less than stellar however. From suspension issues, to an alternator that went in the first 6 months, to a jerky throttle and grinding gears. I can't recommend it.

  • @davidtaylor5007
    @davidtaylor5007 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    13K miles in a 2014 FWD CX-5 2,5l and its been the most comfortable car! Three--five people in the car for 2000 miles-each trips with air conditioning and averaging better than 35mpg. Great seats, headroom...I don't know how they can do it seeing as my 1986 2.4l 4Runner never did much above 29mpg or my 2000 Tacoma 2WD didn't any better. If this Mazda is as trouble-free for 10 years as my Toyotas I'll be a Mazda convert!

    • @davidtaylor5007
      @davidtaylor5007 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      SuperDagod1 I haven't heard of any problems with Mazda transmissions. I got the FWD for its simplicity and I'm not in the snow very much. I liked the Subaru's but the CVT was new and unproven. A friend who got a Nissan Murano with CVT 2 years before had it go out and it wasn't covered! The CX-5 is honestly roomier on the inside than it looks from the outside. Fold the rear seats down and you have enough room to sleep with a bike and a couple boxes of camping stuff. Very comfortable for four on long trips and (my FWD) 38+ mpg hwy is just great. I think I'm right at 13K miles now with a cumulative mpg of 29.9. Ask other owners what they think when you see them at the grocery store or whatever. Go to a dealer and take one for a drive. Lots of great cars in this class, and I'm new to Mazda, but I've been really been pleased so far.

    • @SuperDagod1
      @SuperDagod1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Taylor
      I'm mainly worried about the tranny. I want it to last 200K. I don't want to keep putting money into a vehicle for 15 years. I don't think the top mpg is 38. I think it's like 33 maybe, do you just do well on conservation. I'm kinda torn between the rav 4 and the cx-5. Both sound pretty reliable. Ive done a lot of reading and more reading about it.

    • @davidtaylor5007
      @davidtaylor5007 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      SuperDagod1 Looking at the dealer info...the window-sheet...it says 25-city 32-hwy. I think on long hwy trips I average 33-35 but its done 39.08 on a tank...maybe that was some low-alcohol fuel? I'm soft on acceleration and may do 60 in a 55 but I try to drive smoothly. I like the RAV4 too and was considering a used 6-cyl because I heard they were zippy and could tow alot. I didn't test drive the others Kia Sportage, Mazda Foester, Toyota RAV4 and had doddled-on about a decision long enough that when I took the CX-5 for a ride it just really felt nice/firm/sporty. If I can find a way to email my mileage log to you I will.

    I disagree about the transmission as well. I have the 2015 Mazda 6 GT (might be an issues on the 2014's), and for a midsize 4 door car, it pulls it very well. You would think there is a V6 under the hood. Even with winter auto start and city driving it uses 9.4L per 100km. Very impressive considered the amount of idling I did. Highly recommend the Skyactiv engine family.

    Auto journalists should be required to read the owner's manual before reporting on the car. Case in point: if this guy would have read the owner's manual, he'd know that this vehicle is equipped with a "kickdown switch" in the gas pedal. The operation of the kickdown switch is clearly explained in the owner's manual. If he had read this, he would have understood how it works and why it feels the way it does.

    what can you say about the 2.0L engine CX-5?

    • @lynnmckenney1987
      @lynnmckenney1987 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dan Russel Rayman Everything I've been reading says it's "adequate" to move the car, but pretty underpowered in general.
      Currently looking at 2013 cx5, but it appears they only offer the 2.0l until 2014.
      I'll have to test drive it and see for myself....but that ford 1.6l and 2.0l eco boosts really seem to be calling my name.

      @itsboria6784 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can assure you that the 2.0L engine is more then enough even for a family this is not a sports car. It does the job as it needs todo. 155hp is plenty.

    health issues, for example. What if a person, that still drives on the pavement road, can't get in and out of the lower vehicle without pain? And this person doesn't actually care about awd.

    • @OMGWTFLOLSMH
      @OMGWTFLOLSMH 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SuperDagod1 - You must have have had some very bad transmission issues when you were a child. ALL you have commented on is your fear of transmission issues. Drive like a normal person, change the fluid every 100k and you shouldn't have any issues. And if by fluke you do, go buy a used one at a wreckers for a $1k. Who can predict if a new model is going to have transmission issues 7 years down the road? Meteorologists can't even figure out if it's going to rain tomorrow.

    • @SuperDagod1
