Seeing the destroying angel at the end made me VERY glad for my hard-and-fast rule of "if you don't know it, don't eat it." I have a number of gilled white mushrooms in my yard that my shroom-loving squirrels haven't eaten all week...perhaps that's why. They eat many other types, and other white mushrooms, too. And leave me some in trade for stale cornbread and potato chips.
To clarify, no, I don't trust squirrels to be my cupbearers. I have yet only identified and eaten chicken of the woods on my land, though I have found more than thirty types of mushrooms so far. None so small as these, but then, I apparently haven't been looking closely enough. :)

Adam, considering how simple and specifically adapted the fungi kingdom are do you think they evolved a long time ago and did very very gradual changes after that? I can imagine that there were similar looking mushrooms when dinosaurs walked the Earth
I have a couple of questions for you if you have the time and inclination. I have some reishi that were plug inoculated into mulberry(I'm pretty sure) and they're coming along swimmingly just plopped on the shady side of the house where the rain falls off the roof. I noticed a couple of odd things after harvesting one that had grown around a few stalks of grass. Firstly, that the grass on either side of the fruiting body appeared brown and dead whilst the portion that was encased was still vibrant green and showed every sign of life, and secondly, that when I made small cuts to remove the embedded grass, the fruiting body would secrete a pinkish orange liquid that appeared to polymerize on contact with air as it formed a clear sac like surface that was discernible when probing with a toothpick. I assume this is a concoction used by the fungus for sealing wounds, but my curiosity lies in the fact that it was only secreted from flesh directly adjacent to embedded grass and other similarly cut areas away from grass showed no such response. Do you have any insight on this disparity, why the embedded sections of grass seemed fine, and whether there's any medical relevance to these excreted compounds? I wish I had had the foresight to save a piece exhibiting this to send to you, but that one is already a quart of beautiful tea. I'll try to replicate it with one of the budding fruiting bodies out there and better document it.

I'm in the panhandle of West Virginia very close to Pa. I want to go to haha seriously.
I've been out the last two weekends and been rewarded with a WEALTH of edible fungi (L-O-T-S of Lactarius indigo, Summer Oysters and Smooth Chanterelle this season) as well as many interesting non-edibles. I focused on small mushrooms the past couple seasons, trying to find some of those M. scorodonius/Garlic Mushrooms. No luck there...yet. Thanks for sharing more knowledge with us, Adam. I appreciate you.

The intro made me think about all the non-fruiting fungi we don't even see and are fundamental to ecosystems. Can you make a video about this? Maybe finding the mycelium and teaching how they reproduce and spread their spores. Just an idea.

It was the Destroying Angel that got me into mycology almost 20 years ago. I moved out into a wooded area and they popped up all around. They look so pure and smell so good. They were inviting me to taste them, but I had a very strong hunch that I needed to get a positive identification on them first and I am glad I did. Then I began learning more about fungi
Some of strobilurus secondary metabolites are used as agricultural fungicides. Never heard about medical use.

That last one, instantly recognizable, even though I have never seen it growing, just in field guides and online. Fun video.
I find so many mushrooms that I just can't identify. And I can't always collect them or get a spore print, but I can usually get a photo. But that is not often a sure way to identify a fungus. So I am just used to the fact that there are many strange and beautiful fungi out there that are just part of a fleeting encounter with mysterious organisms that make up our world. We don't have to know absolutely everything. Even if we don't remember a particular encounter, it becomes a part of who we are. And if you look for these little fungi, or tiny plants or insects, you will never be bored. But you will have stains on the knees of your trousers.
Also, do you ever use a hand lens?

i 've noticed that there is always alot of debate between scientists. Just like they can 't agree on how long the Meadow Croft Rock Shelter was lived in by ancient peoples. 16,000 years or 19,000. This place is in PA. The Bering Strait land bridge is the same way.
