Almost 2,000 Years Old! - The Oldest Coin EVER Found Metal Detecting in America!

- Anyone that metal detects remembers the oldest coin they’ve found. They’ll remember exactly where they found it too, almost within inches of where the hole they dug was. I remember finding my first old coin way back when I first started detecting. It was an 1898 Indian head cent and you could have seen the hair standing up on my arms from a football field away. Throughout the years I would go on to break my record for oldest coin over and over again. Each time I did I would stare proudly at my new record holder and think to myself, “this is gonna be a tough one to beat”.
Well fast forward to today and we’re back detecting a new section of our incredibly old Hammered Cob field. A field that has already broken the all-time record for oldest coin, not only for me, but for every single one of us! But today…, oh man today! Not only were old coin found all over this section, but one of us digs up a coin so old that even the earliest settlers would have stared at it in amazement! Hold on to your hats as we shatter a record that may never be beaten, as we start roamin’ around our most amazing field ever!

I love seeing Charley have such an amazing start to 2024! For those who haven't met him, he's one of the kindest, most generous people you could hope to meet. Huge congrats to him on that insanely old coin! I hope to pop back into one of the livestream chats again soon. 🙂
Charlie the CHAMPION!!!!
Congrats Charlie!
You guys (Lynn too) are ALL lucky to have such a great group of friends, that's what makes the channel.
Good job guys. I think your ID is great. I know of at least 5 folks including me who have found 3rd century Roman coins in the US, all on the East Coast. One group was from a SC plantation that burned by 1800. The guy apparently was a coin collector and the liberty ships of WWII brought back ballast sand from Italy and North Africa, and where the sand was dispersed, Roman and other coins have been found. You guys had a great outing.
good knowledge Wiley!
I like your thinking but I could see that being more likely if we were closer to the Jersey shore. We’re hunting 60 miles from the closest beach. I really think the earliest settlers from England (Quakers escaping religious persecution) brought them here and just lost it.
Few years back I dug a Roman coin near Chattanooga TN. About 6 inches deep. In the woods on a steep incline. Didn't look at it close until I got home. Kind of freaked out as it resembled a very rare Roman coin only 2 known to exist. Contacted a friend who is head of archeology at UT Chattanooga, he put me in touch with department at UT Knoxville as they have a Roman collection. UTK Put me in touch with Oxford who has the only 2 that exist. Mine was one year off(older) Without digging out my paperwork can't recall who was on mine but I think dated 221 ad. Apparently there is a strange trail of Roman coins being found from Texas , Oklahoma, Kelso TN, (mine Chattanooga ) and a couple in N east TN near Bristol. Strange stuff!
What did you do with it?
Apparently pretty common coin in Europe. It's in a display box in the den . I will see if I can find the notes and give a better idea of what it was..
Nice to see Musket ball Matt back. Love all the fantastic finds from this field. Thanks for sharing with us.
Good to be back with the guys
Looks like a 3rd or 4th century barbarous radiate roman coin. Stunning
Dude. You comment what they found then it's right there for everyone else to see and you ruin the video for them
Thank you for the info.
wow, fantastic Roman coin. I call that type 'The guy with the spikey hair'. He was the worlds first punk rocker!
I live and detect in South Eastern Iowa. I dug 2 roman coins at the same site about a year apart. One of them was set in a small pin/brooch. The site was a popular outdoor recreation area in the late 1800s, so I believe they would have been "repurposed" as jewlery sometime around that period. Not sure how common that was, but thats my theory on how they got to Iowa! Congratulations, fellas! Keep up the great content!
Congratulations on the Roman coins I found one in Illinois. I wish we could share pictures of the coins.
Awesome Roman coin Charlie! Absolutely from the 4th century, that's when they used the spiky crown on the emperor. Just to say, my oldest coin here in PA is also Roman, 3rd century. It was in a buried cache of old European coins, about 20 all in a small area.
Charlie knocked my slippers off with that find! 🎉 Everyone did great, Congrats ya’ll!!!!
Great episode this week for sure. Congratulations to C.R.H.
aka Harley Charlie.
He yet again knocks it out of the park..
Great hunt! Good to see Lynn the antiquarian Queen on the scene.
I found a 350BC Greek Phillip 2nd hammered coin up in New Hampshire, so yes they do pop up from time to time. Great find.
Wow what a great and unusual find in the US. Charlie is just killing it. I dont think I could leave that field. The nipple button was anothe terrific find.
Congratulations to Charlie on that Roman coin!!

I couldn't imagine being the only one detecting a field like that. I am doing a field now that is loaded with relics, but very few coins,
Very nice finds! Congrats Charley! What a find!
THIS WAS AN AWESOME HUNT, CONGRATS TO ALL !!
I always love seeing the impression that’s left in the dirt from the coins!
I love those beautiful old barns. The northeast US has character thats just unmatched anywhere else
You found a piece of the Viking hoard!
Brad did some digging with a guy in Europe who was super knowledgeable on the thousand year old coins .... I bet we have an answer by Quarter After.
The field of a thousand cobs is now the field of a thousand firsts!
Excellent - and God bless those land owners for the invite.
You’re not kidding! More good finds to come
Very cool to find coins that old in our soil. Once at my last house after a heavy rain, I saw a newly exposed stone. I decided to dig it up the rest of the way and saw something round and green right underneath it. Turned out to be a bronze Thrace Maronia which is Greek. Was from about 375BC. Very small but very thick. Crazy to think those Greek and Roman coins are super common overseas. Finding those here are insane. Obviously the person that lived there forever ago collected old coins. Amazing video!
What a great hunt guys thanks for sharing!!!!!
Hi there; I just got told to hop over to see your Roman bronze and what a beauty... its in really good condition and yes I agree it looks like an Antoninianus which was the main coin of the day brought in by Caracalla early in the 3rd century - they started life with quite a high silver content which went steadily down hill so by the time you get to Aurelian you are basically left with a bronze coin which would have been silvered. well done agin; mind blowing!!!!! Maybe the Romans did get over to you!!!! 😂 All the Best QH! 👍
Clem Fandango and I were going to suggest QH consult you for the Roman coin as well lol 🙌🏻
@@TurdFerguson1978Definitely watching HQ at Nos Da tonight
Thank you! While researching it I did read about the silver content slowly decreasing until it was removed completely. Almost as strange as finding it in the US is all the comments I’ve been getting about other detectorsts that have also found Roman coins in the States.
I saw those too - thanks for getting back!Let me know if you ever get over here you can come and see my collection of Roman coins it would be a pleasure to show them!@@QuarterHoarder

Jason.....I'm impressed on how dedicated you are to record all finds at the expense of your detecting time!! It seems as if your group find goodies at a machine gun rate!! Around here, (Seattle) the finds are not always that good and not that many!! Fantastic finds my friend!!

Charlie is finding everything on my Bucket list! Wow! I actually have seen where a couple roman coins were dug here in Charleston, Sc as well. That is what sparked my Interest on finding one! That is so kool! Great Finds! My oldest is a Maravedis but I'm still holding out hope for a Roman! 😊

Awesome hunt hope to find some nice finds like you guys this year God Bless and happy dirt fishin…Virgil
I collect roman coins. You have a "denari" The back side will have horses pulling a chariot and rider.
A Roman coin in New Jersey? The Templars must have taken a holiday from Oak Island and dropped it! What a crazy field...
You started me thinking: What would the (TV) reaction be if Gary found one tenth of the items found in these fields by the Quarter Hoarder Team?
@@granddad-mv5ef on TV, Gary would probably feign a heart attack. In real life he has found some pretty awesome stuff...
Yes it is magical how these guys find nd so many of the rarest coins that no one else finds ….ever
Congratulations to all especially Charlie who out Oak Island the Oak Island boys.
@@jeffkowalski3107 you can't be happy for them? That says a lot more about you than anything else...
Amazing Charlie goes over to england where lots of roimans and hammered are comes back is on your channel and they start showing up here in US W O W
The place was incredible yet again with so many more great coins and relics, but Charley's Roman coin is Epic!!
Lynn is a pleasant addition to the show. Nice to hear a woman's perspective.
Wow! What a awesome hunt with those copper largies, the nipple button, congrats to Matt finding the seated half dime and of course congrats to Charley on the hammered coin that blows my mind. Stay warm quarter hoarder crew.
Keep Swingin 💪💪
8:06 heck yeah Charlie!!!! My daughter found a roman coin on the floor at her work 2 years ago
Wow great finds! Looks like Gallienus maybe, the hair seems to match
I soon as I saw Charlie’s coin I knew it was Roman. Colonialist came from England and England is full of Roman coins, I dig them every year over there. Some Roman coins can be silver with a crust built upon it. Congratulations
That is a very very old coin wow WOW
Jason CRH has a new meaning now, Charlie "Roman" Harley!
Pretty unbelievable find. Not sure if an encore is even remotely possible. Congratulations Charlie! Wonder if you are required to send that coin off to the British Museum??? HAHAHA. Thanks for sharing!!!
How's it going everyone. Charlie What The Roman Coin? Congrats Big Time, Charlie. Matt Congrats on the Seated Half Dime Beautiful and the Virginia Copper excellent Finds. Can't forget about the Knee Buckle awesome. Jason Love the Buttons you found. Excellent Hunt there. Congrats to everyone and all the Coppers. Take Care
Nice. I found a Silver Greek Drachma in an old trunk I pulled from a dump in NC. It's 2000 years old and has the Athenian Owl on one side. The trunk had belonged to an archeologist I figured out.
Awesome find it's definitely a Roman 3rd century coin called a radiate named after the spiky crown.ive quite a few but none has good has yours .
Very nice, I can't wait to get my legend back from repair and do some south jersey detecting.
Awesome can't wait to watch it with My girlfriend Turd Ferguson later.
I love finding milled silver coins over here in the UK Matts Half Dime is awesome. 😊.
After Finding a Roman coin in the US, it’s time to go home lol.
Very nice.
An awesome day in the cold weather.
Wow.. You guys are still killing it at the cob field...When will it end? Hopefully not soon....👍
Good advice about the signal stopping quickly and being more likely to be a button or coin.
And congratulations to Charley!!! Oddly, I found a 100 BC bronze Greek coin minted in Alexandria, Egypt during the Ptolemy reign right in my hometown of Rochester, NY. Probably a similar story about how it got here. Was a foot down with a clay marble right next to it.
Seems to be a 3rd century Roman Antoninianus (2 Denarii) coin. It may have been the pocket piece of a collector, but there is another possible explanation, too.
In the late 16th and all over the 17th century Spain faced a very high inflation and a severe shortage of small coins. They used everything that barely resembled a coin, including tokens and many Roman coins wich were a common find while plowing the fields. Some of them made it to America, usually old bronze or copper coins wich in the 17th century often were counterstamped multiple times to mark them as Maravedis coins.
I Concur with your 2nd conclusion . And especially with the gold and silver Roman's have been used since their conception to date around the globe. 2:40
Wait until you find a solidus of Vespasian!
there is some great knowledge coming out of this video I am learning more and more!!! Thank you for the Spanish theory! 👍🙏
The field that keeps giving us episodes! May your next be just as giving. Do you and the crew GPS pin the finds? It might be interesting to see if they form a pattern or concentration of finds to pinpoint where to hammer. I'm not disputing y'all's intuition, patience and skills at what it takes to get each and every episode out to us but long story short, I was just curious 🧐.
Wowzers Charile What A Find! Could not Have happened to a more deserving Fella!
I would Love to Know the History Behind that Coin ! Maybe Columbus was late to the Party Lol
Killer day!
