- People aren't just cooking anymore -- they're cooking, texting, talking on the phone, watching TH-cam and uploading photos of the awesome meal they just made. Designer Paolo Cardini questions the efficiency of our multitasking world and makes the case for -- gasp -- "monotasking." His charming 3D-printed smartphone covers just might help.

multitasking and monotasking are not the only options. Nontasking is my favorite.
That was funny man 😆
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
That was good
😂still funny
I tried to multitask while listening to this TED Talk and I missed half of it and had to re-watch it. Lesson learned. Haha.
Michelle Murray Before reading your comment I was thinking that I am the only one who had to suffer this.
But it's not !
Always the same((
this short talk brings up valid points.
life is much more pleasurable and enjoyable when you monotask.
its better to do one task really well than to do multiple tasks poorly.
no.
@@eduardocarvalhonascimento1502noooo
... meanwhile, I'm commenting this w my left hand, doodling w my right hand, listening to him w my ears, chewing w my teeth, reading my science book w my eyes, and bouncing a ball w my feet. This is not a joke, and I'm kinda dissapointed in myself lmfao
dang you seem like an anime character
@@discarded1669 Hi there, this was 3 years ago and I found out I just have adhd so uh.. that's awkward.
On another Ted talk statistics on how much information we learn, manage & ultimately create w/in 1 hour in modern day were said to be more than what a man could learn, manage & create in his entire lifetime 100 years ago, I am 50 and cannot live a day w/out looking for something new to learn & give me a better understanding of the world we live in.
i love how he talks
the real speaker couldn't make it to the presentation today, so they found this guy on the street and told him to use a funny accent and talk about whatever he wants
Yeah this talk is a bit underwhelming, but it really touches on something deeper. We humans haven't really evolved to operate in this hyperstimulating environment of today and it can literally drive one insane. I've had enormous trouble concentrating because of the amount of things that I have to do and felt crushed under the weight. On the other hand I've also found enormous pleasure and a sense of flow in really concentrating on one task, like improvising music. Don't forget to relax!
"Find your monotask spot whithin the multitasking world"
Short and concise talk, I like it. Good info as well.
Thumbs up if you're watching this on the 4th tab of your brows...
...oh
Well, good idea, but *really* simply talk here. Not much info, stats, I don't know, some new stuff, discoveries on multi tasking vs mono. Yes mono can be good, but explain to us why, a story, not just the pictures of the burned bbq.
I was watching this video while working, and thinking about all due assignments, In a way, I'm multitasking.
mmmm.....slowing down a little still doesn't seem like that bad an idea to me. the worlds non stop these days. i can never have enough peace and quiet.
Multitasking requires you to both understand the tasks you attempt to do in parallell, and for you to be able to plan ahead.
Before I start multitasking or add a new task to my workstream i do a quick analysis of temporal and spatial dependencies, and idle/exclusive focus times.
Example: I read articles while listening to music, start a download of a tv episode, go put on some laundry, make a snack, the download has finished so i watch the episode while eating, get laundry, continue reading.
Nice one👍
l HATE SMARTPHONES !,, HAVE YOU NOTICE PPL DON´T PAY ATTENTION WHEN TALKING TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEEN ?...
Okay, focus when talking to someone in front of you, but the rest of his advice is lunacy. 1. I check email on my phone while waiting for food to cook. Visual, aural, and olfactory clues all alert me to look up from my phone and flip the pancake. When I am done making breakfast all my emails are answered. 2. It would get rather annoying toting a separate compass, notepad, flashlight, GPS, etc. That's what my iPhone is for and I will continue to buy products that help me multitask.
Reading out loud is easy. Reading silently is not. And yes, there are people who can't even read, but that's getting more and more rare. Reading is considered to be a single task, just like walking, when in fact there are no activities what-so-ever that require only 1 skill. Everything you do is a result of millions of on/off neurons, and then, in a sense, everything is multitasking. But that's nitpicking.
honestly, its all about monitoring your behavior and having self control. is it necessary to instagram every moment of your life...no, it's not. is it necessary to surf the web in a conversation? actually, that's just rude (unless your looking something up of course). monotasking, in general, more efficient than multitasking. if you're reading a book and on the phone, you most likely will get lost in one of them. but multitasking is great to save time--studying has many tasks involved
Sorry, this may have been a knee-jerk response to this particular video. I watch a lot of TED talks and it makes sense that a lot of them would share the same general themes (education, sustainability, etc), but not necessarily the same exact idea. The idea in this talk bothered me because if people want to use their iPhone for a single function why not just skip the iPhone and fancy cover and buy a normal phone instead? It's like buying a 20-piece knife set and only using one of the knives.
I disagree with that statement as well. It's far more efficient to balance tasks that can coexist healthily at the same time than to put them one after another. For instance I do satellite TV installations for a living: I can either activate one receiver for 15 minutes or I can set it on its way while I crimp a few cables or fish a line through a wall. It's easy to gain time by multitasking as long as you don't attempt to mingle things that aren't appropriate.
one of the two wasn't done well. If somebody had asked you 10 seconds after the guy said something what he meant by it you wouldn't have been able to tell if you really were thinking about your assignments.
Test it out actively instead of retroactively thinking it was like that. You'll be surprised how bad your work ends up to be. Example: Watch the weather forecast, memorise all information and write a short story at the same time. Either the text or your recollection of the forcast will be bad
Multitasking as in "walking and breathing" yeah no doubt we can do that but nobody can write a speech on his favorite food and at the same time listen to and understand a simple physics problem formulated in text.
We have one word processor up there and anything you attempt will end up a) badly done and b) done more slowly.
Every conscious thought (= locomotion doesn't count) blocks all others. You either do them in sequence or you interrupt one for the other which is still in sequence.
It is very very very hard to focus on one thing, i always find that i dont have enough time to enjoy myself and have fun due to work and school, so i multi task, i have like 6 windows opened with music, games, twitter, reddit, google..... if only i didnt need the function of sleep i could have time for everything...
This guy can't be serious... Let's not be organized and efficient, let's just put our blinders back on! Just because our levels of connectivity can outpace us at times doesn't mean we should relapse on our progress. Instead of slowing down people should be focused on learning how to keep up, be organized, and properly schedule their tasks.
Multitasking is B-S. Your mind is rapidly skipping from one thing to another and all that does is generate stress and more potential for errors. Anyone who does anything exceedingly well is doing only one thing at a time. A pro tennis player does not multitask and in fact neither do you. Who would want to play tennis with someone who is multitasking?
> to say "multitasking can be done with easy stuff," is implying it's producing better results…
No it is not. It's implying that it produces no worse or negligibly worse results.
> I'm just asking for mina to challenge the idea of what is "easy" and test it. Is it worth it?
Like I've explained in some other commend, I do that all the time, by eating and talking or eating and watching YT. And those two have noticeable time benefits.
I prefer to anti-task. It's where I am so hopelessly inefficient that the task at hand implodes into an anti-task which smashes into another task. Both are eliminated from existence and I proceed to go back to doing nothing with my life.
i personaly multitask a lot.. but things where i know something will fail i wont multitask.. for e.g. your lame stupid e.g. cooking, phone sms mail and fb ... who would do that.. and if i phone while cooking i wont fail both and i wont try sms'ing cus its plain stupid...
Eh I usually take Ted Talks quite seriously. But this one?! *yawns* There's not even a central idea on which he builds his points upon. I mean the title says more than what he does in the 3-min span. More real-life productivity related examples would be much easier to relate to or be taken more seriously.
I'm watching 2 videos at the same time, this being one of them.
Why should he explain to us something we know already? Are people really that stupid these days? All he does is give us a reminder of the downsides of multitasking, things that everyone with half a brain should be aware of, no stats required.
well it would be a great tak if he'd have shown some numbers.... where are we to know if he's not just simply wrong? what if multitasking and the practice thereof is healthier or smth?
he just says "let's monotask period"... dunno, that's just my take on it.
Oh, in regards to mono-tasking I believe Dr. John Medina has done some research in this matter and discusses it in his book "Brain Rules." It looks like he also has a pretty cool website. brainrules (dot) net/attention
a fine talk, i like its concise aspect.
however, this is somewhat just a reiteration of "less is more", and his premise for why we should "forget multitasking" is not very strong and not infallible.
It may be that this is not a scientific finding, or a revolutionary theory, nor even a life-saving concept, neither a deeper understanding of any philosophical question; but...
nah! no but this time!
4th tab? I think that tab already has kids and grandsons, I don't know for sure, I lost contact with 4th tab some 20 or 30 tabs ago. Must send postcard in Christmas... ops time to Ctrl+T again, gotta go
Its surely down to practice, I can bbq for 100+ people without any problems... i can juggle many things efficiently, because i work hard and efficiently... its done to efficiency not simply mono/multi tasking.
I came for Multi Tasking, this guy is talking about Moolty Tasking !!! nothing here for me bye ! *Flies Away*
There's something to say for the barbecue that's awesome in that jpeg that everyone 'saw' yet you're stuck with, in reality, shitty burnt food. I like the simplicity and depth of this idea.
I fail to see the point of this mans idea/invention. If I want to perform a single task, I will do so. I don't need half my screen real estate obfuscated to control myself.
same, i mean he does have a point, he's just not sold it very well, someone on an earlier ted talk did a much better job of this, and it was part of a talk, not a whole talk
But ww think if we can not be multitasker in this world,we will way way behind ans we would not be useful according to todays world
Dat 'hidden' Apple ad, tho...
But I am watching this video and working on this model and the model looks fine so I am using this time to do two things well now I am commenting but you know what I mean
3: no, only 2% (two porcent) of the people are supertaskers
16: the speaker current project is about a series of front covers
Cute gimmick. I think his point has a lot of merit, but was expecting the talk to be a little more substantial than just a plug for a smartphone covers.
But some one did something for TED saying that multitasking was a good thing. And the "concentration problem" as you call it is probably what happened to my ADHD.
This was great! 😀
One idiot, who cannot concentrate on more simple things at once, burns some chicken then he tells people everybody is doing it wrong.
Ahhh, yes. Ted dot com. Where the people will give a standing ovation to the opening of a drawer. Andy Warhol, eat your heart out!
Stop, you're making me depressed... lol More autodesk inventor tutorials and random Stanford lectures for me thank you very much...
Wow.. made a mildly disapproving comment on this video and i'm already been called dumb, fat and ugly. Stay classy commenters :)
i usually multitask if something at hand is boring. For example when listening to a boring speech I cant help but start fiddling with my phone. I think multitasking is a result of doing boring things. If Bill Gates comes now and talks to you about u fulfilling certain conditions b4 he can give you a million dollars, your brain will immediately love it and push everything else aside, your friends, phone, etc and channel all energies to whatever it is you got to do. Another example is watching an interesting movie or eating an amazing meal. Bcoz u love it and u like it your brain will force you not to do anything else.
Very good video, it have some interesting views on our coulture... But there is also an ad for his 3D-printed smartphone cover :D
If only more people focused on one task, there may be less accidents and incidents as they're in the current moment and concentrating. Stops me making mistakes and find I can focus truly on my family time.
I agree with you in your example. In a case like that, it's definitely appropriate and intelligent to focus on a few tasks. But I don't know how much Paolo was refering to that sort of case. He meant people who DO mingle things that aren't appropriate. There is definitely a lot of that happening, and in some cases, people should try focusing instead of multitasking.
There is good multitasking, but there is bad multitasking. Tweeting is not necessary when you're preparing a finicky dish :)
clicked like, understood the jist of the video, looked at the dislike bar... went back to my computer game.
Hmm... Italian fellow. Huge 'stache. Brown hair. I dunno. Seems familiar to me for some reason.
There was a talk about this just like a week ago that was much better, no need to recycle ideas
He said a lot in a short time with a great deal to consider in managing the mindset of multitasking.
That's nothing I am watching this while making a 3D model and while checking my emails on my phone
It seems like TED's standards continue to decrease and a lot of the same ideas get repeated.
Will someone tell The Onion that their latest talk got uploaded to the wrong channel? Please!
lame
Why would I need to memorise the whole weather forecast? I'm only interested in one place…
good idea
though not applicable to our everyday life, since we are multitaskers by nature
why not just get an old phone you can still do that. I still have my 6 year old samsung.
I think it's focusing on what you're doing instead of driving yourself to distraction.
Not going to lie, this is stupid. I get the point but don't waste TED time with it.
My guess is that if he'd been a New Yorker, the talk would have taken 90 seconds.
the chicken says cluck, the duck says quack, the farmer loves all the animals....
what a load of crap
here is what you think is true,, but actually, the opposite is true
APPLUASE
Back in 16th century, people couldn't read text in their heads. Those few who could, were usually praised for having godlike powers. Now, everyone who can read, can read without reading outloud. This is why I feel that multitasking is also going to be a natural part of us, and that we're going to laugh looking back at 21st century and our inability to do multiple tasks at the same time.
That talk would have been perfect if he rode offstage on a penny farthing.
why is the biggest rock? the question of why is more interesting than what.
The video should've been titled "Some iPhone covers I made"
Hmm watching this whilst playing a flash game seems a bit ironic.
Wait what did he say?? I was distracted by that killer mustache
I get what he's saying, but still... why is this a TedTalk? :P
Going for monotasking is quite bit difficult for today's generation..as they got used to it....they are not able to go Monotasking which is kind of a difficult process to just focuss on a single work....
this is one of the best..it really hit me.
Hah, these Onion parodies are getting better.
Oh, wait...
Forget monotasking, try nonotasking!
Less than 1% of TED talks are actually worth watching...
Yeah, an argument to support his opinion would be great.
Oh my ! His accent...
I'm italian and I hate it now (as I've "multitasked" myself into "monotasking" it in the long run , PRACTICING...)
Luckily, it's just a two minute "propaganda" for a piece of plastic...
Hey , don't stare at me : TED TALKS !!! XD
LOL ! X)
PROCRASTINASTING is my fave.
All the dislikes comes from disgruntled multitaskers.
It was all going well... until he unveiled the product.
Not unless the situation is texting and driving...
Tell Yoshi I said hi!
Oh, and kick Bowser's @SS!!
so you're telling me doing one thing instead of 7 things at once will ensure quality of results and perhaps even enjoyment of the moment.
.
I DID NOT EXPECT THAT ! THIS SHIT IS REVOLUTIONARY ! SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A FUCKING MEDAL.
.
...
I can't tell if this is the real ted, or onion,,
Yeah I like this idea 💡
Lol 😆 개꿀
Oops. Accidentally clicked on an Onion Talks.
Forget multi-tasking, try moustache-tasking.
ok this is just absurd. Why is this on TED?!
