I pretty much enjoyed the special myself. I would have liked more interaction with the other Rangers. But having it be starring Billy & Zack plus Minh was good enough. And everyone seemed like they were throwing a happy family reunion when putting things together. Creative limitations aside, Once & Always didn’t go above or below my expectations.
The only "cringe" worthy acting was from Min. Shes still a young actor and alot to learn. But the others? Walter and David were acting their souls out, there was no cringe there

I like how this anniversary of Power rangers showed Robo rita captured other rangers of Past rangers including Disney era ones like Conner mcknight from Dino thunder and Lunar wolf ranger from Wild force🐺🐺.
@@augustusfreeman4032 but super Sentai is facing its own problem too with the popularity decreasing too, with Hasbro taking over power ranger they focus on building the lore around the series and filling up plot hole. I am excited what they are going to do with their power ranger franchise.
I really only have a couple issues with the special that I noticed on rewatch. David Yost's performance might be a bit too subdued, not so bad as to claim he phoned it in, but definitely not great. The other is that the scenes with Minh trying to morph are really, really cringe.

I just wanted to say I really enjoyed Rocky and Kat’s roles in this episode. I know that they’re not everyone’s favorite characters but I’m a huge fan of them and I really liked them in this story. I never have been able to figure out whether or not the intention here was to bring back the simple charm of the original show or whether that was something that just happened based on the budget and the script. That being said, I agree with a lot of what you talked about here. Your analysis is always incredibly well thought out and generally spot on. I wanted to comment on a couple of other things. It brought me so much joy to see David Yost finally getting what I believed he has been wanting since 1994...a heartfelt, emotional, high stakes Billy episode. If I'm honest, David back in the day was very new and just learning his craft and, to me, wasn't ready to take on too much as an actor. I had some really tough conversations with him back then about the direction of Billy and he made it very clear that he wanted to do more. It ripped my heart out. But it just wasn't his time as an actor. I will always feel bad about not being able to explain that to him more clearly, but you have to do what's right for the show and what your bosses tell you to do. That being said, Mr. Yost has grown by leaps and bounds as an actor and IMHO he gave an emotional, heart warming, real performance that he should be very proud of. I was so happy to see that. He's clearly been working hard and it shows. Bravo, David. It was also nice to see Walter and Kat and all the others back.Such great memories. The whole thing about Thuy was a huge risk. At first I felt like it was kind of inappropriate, but it was handled with great care and respect in the end, and I think it worked really well. I wish they would have spent a little money on the episode as a whole to create some cool VFX and go to some great locations. But that's the thing about Power Rangers I guess, especially if we're trying to bring back the early years. I guess it's appropriate for an anniversary show to look like the show did back in 1994. But, what do I know? I'm not sure what's next for the franchise, but hopefully someone has an idea how to refresh it. Again, IMHO, it could stand a new set of eyes. I'm not sure who's running things since the incredibly sad passing of their amazing CEO, but they need to figure it out if they plan to continue on making new eps. Good luck to them. Truly.
I agree. It didn't make me not enjoy the special but it just felt like, come on guys it's been 30 years. There are plenty of actresses who can do a flip AND read a line worth a damn. U didn't need to get a terrible actor just cuz its tradition.

Like you know things are bad when the children they got to act in Stranger Things are actually able to turn out a good performance and make the characters feel real. Ever since Nickleodeon and Saban got the rights to the franchise back in 2010 the franchise feels like it’s been dumbed down for kids to the absolute maximum. Where it genuinely feels like I’m watching something on the lines of Thomas the Tank Engine or Barney the Dinosaur. Everything with the show is now a “moral lesson” where we have to “stop blaming each other” and “stop fighting”and “work together as a team” or “show that friendship is the ultimate weapon” Like I’m just gonna ignore the franchise is even still around at this point. For me Power Rangers ended with RPM. The last genuinely great season of the show
My only 2 real complaints were the CGI on the Megazord (not the individual Zords but the Megazord specifically and while I liked the idea of Minh a freakin lot, I found her mildly annoying. Not the actress, just some of the diologue and actions of the character. The 2nd might come down to the fact that I'm in my early 40s now and have developed a disdain for the youth. Those damn kids and their music. 😅 Lol
Didn't love it but I'd love Sequels where SPD gets started. Maybe link Commander Doggie's family attack and JDF giving Grumm a bigger a threat level as he Brainwash SPA❤ .. Agree Robo Rita's return was handled better than Zedd's return
I expected more from the special TBH, but capturing the Rangers offscreen was a huge WTF for me. This special could have easily been two parts, had other teams in it, developed the time travel angle and had the Rangers interact with their past selves, especially Minh seeing her mom fighting as a Ranger. And what’s up with the morphers now containing the user’s personal memories?

I mean it's definitely news to Billy and Zack, they had no idea about it, and Zack had given his morpher to Adam. It may have been a one off thing, because the energy that killed Trini was used on Minh caused a weird chain reaction.

Since we have S.P.A. now and Adam is apart of it. Is he a founder? Since Adam and Bridge we're in the Once a Ranger Special I'm sure they talked. Does that means S.P.A. was started because those 2 met? And since Billy was making tech for S.P.A. and in S.P.D. they said that used tech Ethan had designed does that mean Ethan works for Billy?
The Sentinel knight summoned Bridge from the future, so I guess Adam decided to start the organization to help the timeline fall into place, though I do have to wonder what happened to space patrol bravo and charlie in the remaining two years…
They could've gone from SPA straight to SPD in the two years. Primarily because SPD does coincide with traditional U.S. naming conventions for city police departments and SPD initialized if a space police force.
Did we watch the same special? I agree that there was a lot of potential with some of the concepts, but the execution left me shaking my head. I also don't agree that they handled Trini's character tastefully. I'm glad there seem to be a lot of people who enjoyed it, but I just don't get it myself.
Completely agree, the 'squash you flat like your mother' especially hurt me knowing she died in a car accident 😢. I was sad by the end, but it has a chance to be better

This special felt like coming home after a long absense and seeing people I didn't realise I'd missed. Like Power Rangers had found it's heart again. It has a tone I wish we could see in the main series. What I mean is the serious moments were allowed to be serious and the sad moments were allowed to be sad without any jokes to undercut them or the directing trying to move on too quickly. It honestly never occurred to me that since the original five weren't there for Zordon's death and had to hear about it after the fact that some of them would struggle with closure and I applaud the special for making me think about it. It gives extra weight to Billy's words at the start when he says Minh needs closure. It's a shame they didn't use the time portal to give us a Zordon cameo or maybe he could have come to her when she almost died and had an out of body experience. I actually thought they were setting that up when Zack said: "You never met him." Speaking of that Trini montage, I feel like it would've been more impactful, at least to me, if they had ended on the clip from "Food Fight" where Trini says: "Hey Rita, you'll have to try harder than that if you want to beat us!" At first, I thought Aisha and Adam were responsible for bringing Doggie Crugar to Earth but he's been here since the SPD ranger were kids so I don't know what they were doing near Sirius. I suppose they could be responsible for ferrying refugees from all the places the Trubian Empire has conquered and that why there's so many aliens on Earth in 2025.
I liked Once & Always because Billy and Zack were given a chance to shine, alongside Minh. However, having Kat and Rocky here is a mixed bag, and the CGI looks gross. Nothing will ever beat Forever Red.
To be fair, the CGI is a very big improvement from all the previous attempts from the movies (Turbo is an exemption, it uses Sentai Footages), it just needs to get polished.
Zack and Billy were the highlight of the special. As much my thoughts for Kat and Rocky, Rocky has grew on me in this special I felt he was part of the team and not an extra or replacement. Some CGI were good there were few parts were should had been better or let down like the Dino zords. Outside of that I've loved when downloaded on my phone, computer, and USB
its awful, you guys have really low standards. the fights are terrible and have no weight behind the hits and the acting is worst thing ive seen in a long time. theres no way rita took out most of the team and 2 generic goons capturing the other rangers. how did they struggle so much with those 3 and then be able to overpower them in the last fight. only thing i liked was alphas return everything else is awful. I'll never forgive those flat morph sequences, like you're reprising your role as a ranger show more enthusiasm. 3/10
Hey I totally get not liking it but to be fair power scaling in power rangers has never made sense episode to episode since the original show. I do think the morphing sequences were flat but that's because the mighty morphing sequence is super corny (doesn't mean it's not good).
Bro its Power Rangers? Where you expectimg a shakespearian master piece? MMPR is bottom of the barrel garbage and this show easily destroys anything from mighty morphing. I really liked Minh. She's just like all of us (who doesn't wanna grab a morpher and smack down bad guys), and her flaws were extremely understandable for someone of her age and in her position. I think the tone was set perfectly to feel like this is the same show as the og, while not being completely stuck in the 90s.
I’m not a huge fan of Minh (as much as I wanna be), and I honestly don’t buy her endgame as a hero. While I don’t agree with her actions, I can get behind her motivations. Like you said, she fits the story very well, and her feelings (loss, vengeance, excited over possibly being a superhero just like Mom) make perfect sense. I’m not even saying that Minh shouldn’t be a Ranger (part of the point of this special was the focus on the next generation, and MMPR was always passing the baton of power). I just feel like Minh turning into Mighty Morphin Yellow for just one random act of heroism after about 40 minutes of self-centeredness out of a whole hour wasn’t truly earned. (I know that other Rangers got their powers for so much less, but still.)
Before i start watching this video im gana say i loved this special it was great it had a very great message and granted child avtor wasnt that great. but was justin great? I definitely want to see more of Charlie Kersh/Minh Kwan, and I think Hasbro has the budget and time to pull off Power Rangers Hexagon, and put Minh front and center.
Why not their own series? Power Rangers is capable of creating their own rangers that are original from the Sentai. Lightspeed Rescue and Jungle Fury did so, and now Cosmic Fury.

Just watched it. Is it good? No. It is not. It is bland. It never reaches honest emotions. The CGI is unnecessary, they shouldve used practical effects for the zords at least. I dont understand how it turned out so bland. They could have just looked at what worked in Forever Red and go from there. For a better product, go watch Countdown to Destruction and Forever Red. I rewatched them right after the anniversary special and it truly shows how much the previous writers cared about how the scripts come before manofactured nostalgia.
I think the POV here should be treated more like it the series is trying to be less on the Sentai formula and more on creating its own thing. Notice that there is less emphasis on weapons, the "calling my final attack" and the usual "pose after the monster blows up" thing almost never existes here. So if most part of the nostalgia are those things, yeah, better stick to the in-series specials.
Can anyone break down the jacked up time line of this special? How is Tommy green again when he was white when Trini, Jason, and Zack left the show? Maybe I am just thinking too much into this, but I hate it when big plot holes aren't addressed.
Did you see the crossover in Ninja Star? Tommy has a master morpher that lets him use any of his previous ranger forms, including Green. That's also when JJ (his and Kat's son) was first mentioned, not including the comics.
LOL there is no "jacked up timeline". Tommy has access to all of his power-sets. "Dimensions in Danger" special shows him defaulting as the Green Ranger, unless he has to access arsenal/abilities from his other power-sets.

I get it’s an anniversary special, but I don’t like Cat and Rocky using Mighty Morphing powers just because. Imo, they should have just used the Zeo Powers
I grappled with this question, but this video is making me want to ask it: why is it that Billy's trying to resurrect him now? Was it something he's been trying to do ever since he found out about the sacrifice, or did something more recent happen that made him pursue this? Does this process retcon how Zedd returned? That aside, I love how this special made the team feel more human than the first three seasons.
It’s more than possible that Billy’s been working on this for the last twenty four years. It’s just he also had to start a company, build the new Command Center, repair two sets of Zords, more than likely aid Tommy in making the Dino Thunder powers, make Tommy’s Master Morpher and possibly ones for Kat and Adam, and all this while juggling having a wife off planet. He’s got a lot on his plate.
My guess is it’s a number of factors. Given he used to live on Aquitar, which is implied in “Graduation Blues” to be some backwater planet given the unfamiliarity of the Hydro Contaminators to the Machine Empire, news may have taken a while to reach him. Something else to note; Zordon’s tube isn’t just glass. What it is depends on what the writers want since he was originally in a time warp with that being his way to communicate with Earth but then he was just staying in it for shits and giggles by Turbo I guess? I think they imply the one on the episode is supposed to be the original from “Countdown to Destruction” (which was both shattered and inside the Dark Fortress which humanity scrapped and used the blueprints to create Terra Venture but whatever) so it can’t have been easy to reassemble correctly. Alpha 5’s non-existence since “Passing the Torch” and the fact that he doesn’t exist here implies that he died; presumably on Eltar during Turbo’s finale so Billy was basically building it blind far as I can tell. One last thing to consider; resurrecting Zordon is a priority but Cranston Tech exists as… I want to say a humanitarian company for lack of a better term? They make tech to make lives better so he clearly has many priorities.
The thing that makes this movie really dumb is the fact that a few things are left unanswered,how did the power coins get remade when zordon and ninjor were canonically the ones who made the original power coins and Rita and Zedd destroyed them? There's also the fact that Billy has been under water with the aqua rangers for over twenty six yrs (yes I actually looked up the air date of countdown to destruction) and thus wouldn't know about Rita or Zedd being changed back or even zordons death since zordon died in space far away from earth because of trakeena and the other bad guys ,there's also the fact that Rita and Zedd's evil energy was purified which is why Rita became the mystic mother. There is also the fact that there no way in hades Billy could pinpoint zordons energy and reconstruct it because a) he wouldn't know zordon died and b) it's been 26yrs since zordons death which means that the energy that once was zordon has likely passed beyond earth or any nearby planets orbit for Billy to try to reconstruct it. There also the fact that the red space ranger smashed I repeat smashed zordons tube aboard a space ship so again there's no way Billy could reconstruct zordons tube because it was made of an unclassified material. This dude is basically trying to retconn everything Saban Disney and Hasbro has done. Period.
OK I feel like you missed a few seasons, because the original team was shown years ago restored, though not much explanation. Jason was in forever red, black ranger Adam got his power back with mystic knight, then mega force mentor brought back the entire team with his powers. Plus cosmic fury implied the guardians were involved, so there are a couple of explanation, as for Billy, he could had found out in between the years, it's not like aqua wouldn't be out of reach, plus the special said he goes in bewteen earth amd aqua

I have a lot of feelings, most of them being, this is exactly what I wanted. Billy and Zach finally getting some proper closure and seeimg them on screen again was amazing. Minh was amazing as a teenager with attitude. Without her this woildnt work. Also Hot take I really am happy that Steve Cardenas and Catherine Sutherland were in this over Amy Jo and ASJ.
@@pilot8220 If its in reaction to the hot take, Kat and Rocky are really underrated IMO and for this story they work way better than Kim and Jason would. Jason as a character is very bullheaded and leaderly which i think would force other characters to the background, and Kat IMO works better in this story since she has that personal connection to Tommy who gets taken. I find it weird that those two didnt just use their Zeo suits, but overall I think they work really well. They are also just a joy to see on screen again, especially Steve Cardenas, guy is obviously having a great time and its really nice. ASJ and Amy Jo both get a lot of spotlight already so its nice to see Steve Cardenas and Catherine Sutherland get the recognition they deserve
I agree with you 100%. As much as I would have liked to see all the gang together for the first time, it was overdue to unite certain characters and reunite the Stone Canyon trio.
I enjoyed it.. the only thing I really didn't like that ruined it a bit for me is that they cgi'd the zord vs monster fight.. felt it would have been alot better if they went old school with costume fighting instead.
What if during Karone’s trial to get the Lost Galaxy Pink powers, she WASN’T hallucinating, but a manifestation of the Astronema energy able to actually PROJECT how it appeared before?
I think it's funny how they actually made a direct reference to the 2017 movie, and most people missed it. The tagline for the advertising for the 2017 movie was, "Together they are more." In this, Robo Rita quips to her minions, "Together they are more... Power for me!" So if anyone watched this, and wondered why she said that line the way she did... Yeah... 2017 movie advertising.
For a reunion event, it would've been nice to get all the original rangers back together again, but seeing Billy and Zach again after so long was good enough. I found Minh to be an AGGRESSIVELY irritating character throughout. Her dialogue is very stiff and akward even by Power Rangers standards, her behavior is illogical at best and irritating at worst and she really doesnt get much better over the course of the film. The CGI Megazord looks cheap and the battle with Snizzard is very anticlimactic. I do like the in universe explanation for Robo-Rita ala Venjix in Beast Morphers, but the overly serious tone clashes with the goofiness of the premise. This movie is a solid 6/10. They tried to do the hyper serious transition from a kids show thing from Digimon Tri, but didn't take enough risks.

I just thought it was okay. I personally don’t care about nostalgia, so as a story it just felt flat. Especially when half the original cast that Trini was with is just gone. Minh for some reason is Trini’s daughter yet doesn’t have a close relationship with Jason or Kimberly or even Tommy? I know there are real world reasons why they couldn’t be here, but it feels awkward. And then things that just don’t make sense to me. Now the MMPR is against killing, even though they kill every villain they come across without remorse unless they get away from them. Minh is just unappealing Rita kills a ranger then waits a whole year before doing anything??) even though multiple plots of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was about her severing one power ranger from the group to kill the others?
This is literally how I feel. Minh just felt like a edgy May-Sue character to me. Besides, I wanted to see what it would be like if Rita actually SUCCEEDED in her plan.

When Zack explained to Minh that Zordon was like their father so that she could understand where Billy is coming from and see how similar it is to what she had been trying to do all along, the difference is Billy still moved on with his life and was trying to make things better for other people whereas Minh only really cared about herself and was playing the hero role tangentially. It’s only when she learns this lesson that we get another later scene I like of Minh finally following in her mom’s footsteps and saving Billy. I also think Zack taking on the role of her father to give her that heart to heart about their father (Zordon) was another nice touch
They filmed it long before he passed away. JDF declined to be in it. So it is what it is, unfortunately. This ain't Marvel. PR wasn't about to get any more money than what they got to reshoot anything.
JDF was originally on board when it was about Tommy regaining the Green Ranger powers, I think, but after the screenplay was changed to a 30th anniversary special for the franchise, he said no. Aaron Schoenke, a close friend of his, explained it best.

Loved what you said about Billy messing around with powers he doesn't understand. I like the idea of him putting his intellect to use like this because he can't cope with the loss of Zordon. However, it was a bit disappointing that dude is linked to SO MANY ranger teams including a number of other geniuses capable of utilizing the morpin grid. Would've been better to link up with a number of them to double check his figures before hitting the start butting reviving Rita... That's what made the ending scene at the juice bar a bit alarming. He and Zac were stunned when Minh mentioning the images of her mother that the grid seemed to give her as the coin/morpher allowed the power to flow through her. Billy was like "Well, the grid can make the impossible happen. Maybe I shouldn't give up on bringing Zordon back after all..." DUDE, STOP! Think about it before you try again before you revive King Mondo or Divatox or heck a number of the 1000s of monsters, generals and foot soldiers that were vaporized or cleansed by the Z-Wave!
Such an odd choice to not only make Trini a single mom, but to apparently have had Mingh out of wedlock. She didn't take the father's last name, so she never married, or the father ditched her, or Mingh is a sperm bank baby or an unplanned pregnancy.
@connor98reilly It would also be just as realistic to reveal that Trini was secretly a serial killer without anyone knowing, so that argument is moot. I find it odd because on top of the tragedy of Trini dying in the show they add that she apparently didn't have a happy married life. Given the lack of any photos of the father we can assume that he's not dead and that he's not loved. Since he didn't take Mingh in after Trini's death and isnt even mentioned means that he's a deadbeat dad, adding more tragedy to trini's life. Or that Trini wanted a child but not the hassle of having a husband. That hurts Trini as a character, because it would mean that she's risking her life as a ranger when she should be prioritizing taking care of Mingh. She doesn't have to be a ranger, they could easily find a replacement for her. Trini lucked out that her friends would take care of her. That's why it's an odd choice, because of the character implications and writing problems.

But I respect your opinion imma share mine too if you’re interested. I think it paints Trini as quite a strong person. We see this through Mingh who is clearly extremely inspired by her mom. Trini had dedicated her life to being a ranger up until then so it would understandably be difficult to give it up especially since they had little to do until robot Rita came back. When I said realistic I meant relatable. People relate to a character who has lost a parent, even a single parent at that or who grew up in a one parent family. It’s good to give everyone something to relate to. It shows Trini as an incredibly strong person who wasn’t afraid that she might die as a ranger. I think the key is to show that regardless of what happened, Trini was strong, dedicated and inspiring which are traits you can see in Mingh. One final thing, would you not argue Zack should give up his ranger powers then, considering he’s her guardian now and is in the same position Trini was. Otherwise surely he’s risking ruining her life even more? (Just to be clear I think Trini and Zack should have continued to be rangers, just playing devils advocate to your point.) The lack of photos is a little odd but we can just as easily ask "why are there no photos of Trini and Minh together?" or "why are there no photos of Trini after her high school years?" For all we know it's entirely possible Trini was happily married and Minh's father died when she was very young. There's another problem though. In MMPR we met several of Trini's family. Her parents, her uncle and her cousin. Yet Billy states that Minh "doesn't have anybody else." That means that all of Trini's relatives are either dead or estranged from her.
It has it's heart in the right place *BUT* the execution, direction, dialogue, performances (sans Walter Jones) and effects are really *cheesy* , subpar and cheap. Not in an endearing way.... more in a cringy way in our current HD 4K landscape. 👈👈 This is not something that will win over new fans, it just reinforces that Power Rangers is a dated relic of the 90s.
I mean, if you want to make new fans you shouldnt watch a nostaglia bait trip for a show that ended 30 years ago. Its cheesy, its fun, and perfectly captures what made MMPR good
jasons actor had a legal nightmare, JDF said in his last appearance in dimension in danger that that was going to be his last apperance, and in November last year he passed, like it make sense why they weren't there
Adding what was said I honestly wouldn’t worry if Divatox was brought back. She only “defeated” the power rangers because of Goldgoyle and let’s be honest the Turbo rangers weren’t up there with the MMPRs or Zeo rangers.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but you'd think a special meant to celebrate MMPR would have had more effort put into it. Everything from the sets and acting make it look like they had the budget of an episode of the original series. Nobody sounds genuine in the show, Yost especially. For whatever reason he sounds bored and disinterested in every scene, even ones that are supposed to be emotional. The fight choreography both in and out of the suits is poor, not even on the level of the zyuranger fights. Forever Red was a far better tribute for presumably a similar budget.
I like what they did with Trini's death. Minh's rage is certainly understandable. Though the fact she doesn't have a father brings up some questions. I like the pairing of Billy and Zack and I kinda wish that got played into them being a couple. Speaking of which, that one scene where Minh had to rescue that gay couple felt super pandering. It's sad that JDF is no longer with us. We could have potentially had an MMPR/Zeo crossover (the OG MMPR team + Minh along side the Zeos). Maybe JJ will eventually be an onscreen character and maybe even inherit the Master Morpher.
The stupid queer scene was not needed. Why they force that crap is unknown to me. I almost turned it off but it was almost over at that point but it was something I have to not let my child see.
I was a bit stunned that despite Robo Rita literally blabbing to the rangers that she's going to the Dark Dimension to plan her next scheme...the rangers didn't do squat. Yes, I know they had just lost one of their own so going after Rita blasters in hand would've be smart. However, ONE YEAR passed! We've seen Billy concoct devices capable of allowing the team to enter the Dark Dimension before (The Green Candle mini-arc) so why not connect with other rangers and go kill that bot?!
Well, regarding their actors, ASJ wasn't gonna be in it for obvious reasons, AJJ said she wouldn't be in it, and JDF was on board at first, but he later turned it down. The characters? You'll have to watch the special for yourself and find out.

Pretty much covered my feelings. Just wish it had more budget and could have been a mini series.
I really liked the speical, the only thing that was missing was Jen or(Carter) coming back and saying that vengance is not a virtue of a power ranger.
It was a beautiful tribute episode for Thuy Trang.
I pretty much enjoyed the special myself. I would have liked more interaction with the other Rangers. But having it be starring Billy & Zack plus Minh was good enough. And everyone seemed like they were throwing a happy family reunion when putting things together. Creative limitations aside, Once & Always didn’t go above or below my expectations.
The rewatch value on this is crazy high, at least in my opossum 🥰

@@augustusfreeman4032 but super Sentai is facing its own problem too with the popularity decreasing too, with Hasbro taking over power ranger they focus on building the lore around the series and filling up plot hole. I am excited what they are going to do with their power ranger franchise.
Super Sentai does also make 10 year anniversary specials for their series. I can see different series of PR getting the same treatment.

I really only have a couple issues with the special that I noticed on rewatch. David Yost's performance might be a bit too subdued, not so bad as to claim he phoned it in, but definitely not great. The other is that the scenes with Minh trying to morph are really, really cringe.

I just wanted to say I really enjoyed Rocky and Kat’s roles in this episode. I know that they’re not everyone’s favorite characters but I’m a huge fan of them and I really liked them in this story. I never have been able to figure out whether or not the intention here was to bring back the simple charm of the original show or whether that was something that just happened based on the budget and the script. That being said, I agree with a lot of what you talked about here. Your analysis is always incredibly well thought out and generally spot on. I wanted to comment on a couple of other things. It brought me so much joy to see David Yost finally getting what I believed he has been wanting since 1994...a heartfelt, emotional, high stakes Billy episode. If I'm honest, David back in the day was very new and just learning his craft and, to me, wasn't ready to take on too much as an actor. I had some really tough conversations with him back then about the direction of Billy and he made it very clear that he wanted to do more. It ripped my heart out. But it just wasn't his time as an actor. I will always feel bad about not being able to explain that to him more clearly, but you have to do what's right for the show and what your bosses tell you to do. That being said, Mr. Yost has grown by leaps and bounds as an actor and IMHO he gave an emotional, heart warming, real performance that he should be very proud of. I was so happy to see that. He's clearly been working hard and it shows. Bravo, David. It was also nice to see Walter and Kat and all the others back.Such great memories. The whole thing about Thuy was a huge risk. At first I felt like it was kind of inappropriate, but it was handled with great care and respect in the end, and I think it worked really well. I wish they would have spent a little money on the episode as a whole to create some cool VFX and go to some great locations. But that's the thing about Power Rangers I guess, especially if we're trying to bring back the early years. I guess it's appropriate for an anniversary show to look like the show did back in 1994. But, what do I know? I'm not sure what's next for the franchise, but hopefully someone has an idea how to refresh it. Again, IMHO, it could stand a new set of eyes. I'm not sure who's running things since the incredibly sad passing of their amazing CEO, but they need to figure it out if they plan to continue on making new eps. Good luck to them. Truly.

Ever since Nickleodeon and Saban got the rights to the franchise back in 2010 the franchise feels like it’s been dumbed down for kids to the absolute maximum. Where it genuinely feels like I’m watching something on the lines of Thomas the Tank Engine or Barney the Dinosaur.
Everything with the show is now a “moral lesson” where we have to “stop blaming each other” and “stop fighting”and “work together as a team” or “show that friendship is the ultimate weapon”
Like I’m just gonna ignore the franchise is even still around at this point.
For me Power Rangers ended with RPM. The last genuinely great season of the show

My only 2 real complaints were the CGI on the Megazord (not the individual Zords but the Megazord specifically and while I liked the idea of Minh a freakin lot, I found her mildly annoying. Not the actress, just some of the diologue and actions of the character. The 2nd might come down to the fact that I'm in my early 40s now and have developed a disdain for the youth. Those damn kids and their music. 😅 Lol

I expected more from the special TBH, but capturing the Rangers offscreen was a huge WTF for me. This special could have easily been two parts, had other teams in it, developed the time travel angle and had the Rangers interact with their past selves, especially Minh seeing her mom fighting as a Ranger.
And what’s up with the morphers now containing the user’s personal memories?

The Sentinel knight summoned Bridge from the future, so I guess Adam decided to start the organization to help the timeline fall into place, though I do have to wonder what happened to space patrol bravo and charlie in the remaining two years…
They could've gone from SPA straight to SPD in the two years. Primarily because SPD does coincide with traditional U.S. naming conventions for city police departments and SPD initialized if a space police force.

Did we watch the same special? I agree that there was a lot of potential with some of the concepts, but the execution left me shaking my head. I also don't agree that they handled Trini's character tastefully. I'm glad there seem to be a lot of people who enjoyed it, but I just don't get it myself.

This special felt like coming home after a long absense and seeing people I didn't realise I'd missed. Like Power Rangers had found it's heart again. It has a tone I wish we could see in the main series. What I mean is the serious moments were allowed to be serious and the sad moments were allowed to be sad without any jokes to undercut them or the directing trying to move on too quickly.
It honestly never occurred to me that since the original five weren't there for Zordon's death and had to hear about it after the fact that some of them would struggle with closure and I applaud the special for making me think about it. It gives extra weight to Billy's words at the start when he says Minh needs closure.
It's a shame they didn't use the time portal to give us a Zordon cameo or maybe he could have come to her when she almost died and had an out of body experience. I actually thought they were setting that up when Zack said: "You never met him." Speaking of that Trini montage, I feel like it would've been more impactful, at least to me, if they had ended on the clip from "Food Fight" where Trini says: "Hey Rita, you'll have to try harder than that if you want to beat us!"
At first, I thought Aisha and Adam were responsible for bringing Doggie Crugar to Earth but he's been here since the SPD ranger were kids so I don't know what they were doing near Sirius. I suppose they could be responsible for ferrying refugees from all the places the Trubian Empire has conquered and that why there's so many aliens on Earth in 2025.

To be fair, the CGI is a very big improvement from all the previous attempts from the movies (Turbo is an exemption, it uses Sentai Footages), it just needs to get polished.
Zack and Billy were the highlight of the special. As much my thoughts for Kat and Rocky, Rocky has grew on me in this special I felt he was part of the team and not an extra or replacement. Some CGI were good there were few parts were should had been better or let down like the Dino zords. Outside of that I've loved when downloaded on my phone, computer, and USB

its awful, you guys have really low standards. the fights are terrible and have no weight behind the hits and the acting is worst thing ive seen in a long time. theres no way rita took out most of the team and 2 generic goons capturing the other rangers. how did they struggle so much with those 3 and then be able to overpower them in the last fight. only thing i liked was alphas return everything else is awful. I'll never forgive those flat morph sequences, like you're reprising your role as a ranger show more enthusiasm. 3/10
Hey I totally get not liking it but to be fair power scaling in power rangers has never made sense episode to episode since the original show. I do think the morphing sequences were flat but that's because the mighty morphing sequence is super corny (doesn't mean it's not good).

I really liked Minh. She's just like all of us (who doesn't wanna grab a morpher and smack down bad guys), and her flaws were extremely understandable for someone of her age and in her position. I think the tone was set perfectly to feel like this is the same show as the og, while not being completely stuck in the 90s.

I’m not a huge fan of Minh (as much as I wanna be), and I honestly don’t buy her endgame as a hero. While I don’t agree with her actions, I can get behind her motivations. Like you said, she fits the story very well, and her feelings (loss, vengeance, excited over possibly being a superhero just like Mom) make perfect sense. I’m not even saying that Minh shouldn’t be a Ranger (part of the point of this special was the focus on the next generation, and MMPR was always passing the baton of power). I just feel like Minh turning into Mighty Morphin Yellow for just one random act of heroism after about 40 minutes of self-centeredness out of a whole hour wasn’t truly earned. (I know that other Rangers got their powers for so much less, but still.)

Just watched it. Is it good? No. It is not. It is bland. It never reaches honest emotions. The CGI is unnecessary, they shouldve used practical effects for the zords at least. I dont understand how it turned out so bland. They could have just looked at what worked in Forever Red and go from there. For a better product, go watch Countdown to Destruction and Forever Red. I rewatched them right after the anniversary special and it truly shows how much the previous writers cared about how the scripts come before manofactured nostalgia.
They can't afford those kinds of effects in the studio
I think the POV here should be treated more like it the series is trying to be less on the Sentai formula and more on creating its own thing. Notice that there is less emphasis on weapons, the "calling my final attack" and the usual "pose after the monster blows up" thing almost never existes here. So if most part of the nostalgia are those things, yeah, better stick to the in-series specials.

Did you see the crossover in Ninja Star? Tommy has a master morpher that lets him use any of his previous ranger forms, including Green. That's also when JJ (his and Kat's son) was first mentioned, not including the comics.
LOL there is no "jacked up timeline". Tommy has access to all of his power-sets. "Dimensions in Danger" special shows him defaulting as the Green Ranger, unless he has to access arsenal/abilities from his other power-sets.

I grappled with this question, but this video is making me want to ask it: why is it that Billy's trying to resurrect him now? Was it something he's been trying to do ever since he found out about the sacrifice, or did something more recent happen that made him pursue this? Does this process retcon how Zedd returned?
That aside, I love how this special made the team feel more human than the first three seasons.
It’s more than possible that Billy’s been working on this for the last twenty four years. It’s just he also had to start a company, build the new Command Center, repair two sets of Zords, more than likely aid Tommy in making the Dino Thunder powers, make Tommy’s Master Morpher and possibly ones for Kat and Adam, and all this while juggling having a wife off planet. He’s got a lot on his plate.

My guess is it’s a number of factors. Given he used to live on Aquitar, which is implied in “Graduation Blues” to be some backwater planet given the unfamiliarity of the Hydro Contaminators to the Machine Empire, news may have taken a while to reach him. Something else to note; Zordon’s tube isn’t just glass. What it is depends on what the writers want since he was originally in a time warp with that being his way to communicate with Earth but then he was just staying in it for shits and giggles by Turbo I guess? I think they imply the one on the episode is supposed to be the original from “Countdown to Destruction” (which was both shattered and inside the Dark Fortress which humanity scrapped and used the blueprints to create Terra Venture but whatever) so it can’t have been easy to reassemble correctly. Alpha 5’s non-existence since “Passing the Torch” and the fact that he doesn’t exist here implies that he died; presumably on Eltar during Turbo’s finale so Billy was basically building it blind far as I can tell. One last thing to consider; resurrecting Zordon is a priority but Cranston Tech exists as… I want to say a humanitarian company for lack of a better term? They make tech to make lives better so he clearly has many priorities.
Billy got Moxxie from Helluva Boss, he can just ask Moxxie to ask Stolas if they could bring back Zordon.
The thing that makes this movie really dumb is the fact that a few things are left unanswered,how did the power coins get remade when zordon and ninjor were canonically the ones who made the original power coins and Rita and Zedd destroyed them? There's also the fact that Billy has been under water with the aqua rangers for over twenty six yrs (yes I actually looked up the air date of countdown to destruction) and thus wouldn't know about Rita or Zedd being changed back or even zordons death since zordon died in space far away from earth because of trakeena and the other bad guys ,there's also the fact that Rita and Zedd's evil energy was purified which is why Rita became the mystic mother. There is also the fact that there no way in hades Billy could pinpoint zordons energy and reconstruct it because a) he wouldn't know zordon died and b) it's been 26yrs since zordons death which means that the energy that once was zordon has likely passed beyond earth or any nearby planets orbit for Billy to try to reconstruct it. There also the fact that the red space ranger smashed I repeat smashed zordons tube aboard a space ship so again there's no way Billy could reconstruct zordons tube because it was made of an unclassified material. This dude is basically trying to retconn everything Saban Disney and Hasbro has done. Period.
OK I feel like you missed a few seasons, because the original team was shown years ago restored, though not much explanation. Jason was in forever red, black ranger Adam got his power back with mystic knight, then mega force mentor brought back the entire team with his powers. Plus cosmic fury implied the guardians were involved, so there are a couple of explanation, as for Billy, he could had found out in between the years, it's not like aqua wouldn't be out of reach, plus the special said he goes in bewteen earth amd aqua

I have a lot of feelings, most of them being, this is exactly what I wanted. Billy and Zach finally getting some proper closure and seeimg them on screen again was amazing. Minh was amazing as a teenager with attitude. Without her this woildnt work. Also Hot take I really am happy that Steve Cardenas and Catherine Sutherland were in this over Amy Jo and ASJ.

Jason as a character is very bullheaded and leaderly which i think would force other characters to the background, and Kat IMO works better in this story since she has that personal connection to Tommy who gets taken.
I find it weird that those two didnt just use their Zeo suits, but overall I think they work really well. They are also just a joy to see on screen again, especially Steve Cardenas, guy is obviously having a great time and its really nice.
ASJ and Amy Jo both get a lot of spotlight already so its nice to see Steve Cardenas and Catherine Sutherland get the recognition they deserve

I think it's funny how they actually made a direct reference to the 2017 movie, and most people missed it.
The tagline for the advertising for the 2017 movie was, "Together they are more."
In this, Robo Rita quips to her minions, "Together they are more... Power for me!" So if anyone watched this, and wondered why she said that line the way she did... Yeah... 2017 movie advertising.

For a reunion event, it would've been nice to get all the original rangers back together again, but seeing Billy and Zach again after so long was good enough.
I found Minh to be an AGGRESSIVELY irritating character throughout. Her dialogue is very stiff and akward even by Power Rangers standards, her behavior is illogical at best and irritating at worst and she really doesnt get much better over the course of the film. The CGI Megazord looks cheap and the battle with Snizzard is very anticlimactic.
I do like the in universe explanation for Robo-Rita ala Venjix in Beast Morphers, but the overly serious tone clashes with the goofiness of the premise.
This movie is a solid 6/10. They tried to do the hyper serious transition from a kids show thing from Digimon Tri, but didn't take enough risks.
It was terrible an insult to Thuy Trang and JDF.
Honestly it could be the best thing since sliced bread. I don't care anymore. If I can skip the Batman then this project isn't even on my radar.

When Zack explained to Minh that Zordon was like their father so that she could understand where Billy is coming from and see how similar it is to what she had been trying to do all along, the difference is Billy still moved on with his life and was trying to make things better for other people whereas Minh only really cared about herself and was playing the hero role tangentially. It’s only when she learns this lesson that we get another later scene I like of Minh finally following in her mom’s footsteps and saving Billy. I also think Zack taking on the role of her father to give her that heart to heart about their father (Zordon) was another nice touch

They filmed it long before he passed away. JDF declined to be in it. So it is what it is, unfortunately. This ain't Marvel. PR wasn't about to get any more money than what they got to reshoot anything.
JDF was originally on board when it was about Tommy regaining the Green Ranger powers, I think, but after the screenplay was changed to a 30th anniversary special for the franchise, he said no. Aaron Schoenke, a close friend of his, explained it best.

Loved what you said about Billy messing around with powers he doesn't understand. I like the idea of him putting his intellect to use like this because he can't cope with the loss of Zordon. However, it was a bit disappointing that dude is linked to SO MANY ranger teams including a number of other geniuses capable of utilizing the morpin grid. Would've been better to link up with a number of them to double check his figures before hitting the start butting reviving Rita...
That's what made the ending scene at the juice bar a bit alarming. He and Zac were stunned when Minh mentioning the images of her mother that the grid seemed to give her as the coin/morpher allowed the power to flow through her. Billy was like "Well, the grid can make the impossible happen. Maybe I shouldn't give up on bringing Zordon back after all..."
DUDE, STOP! Think about it before you try again before you revive King Mondo or Divatox or heck a number of the 1000s of monsters, generals and foot soldiers that were vaporized or cleansed by the Z-Wave!

I find it odd because on top of the tragedy of Trini dying in the show they add that she apparently didn't have a happy married life. Given the lack of any photos of the father we can assume that he's not dead and that he's not loved. Since he didn't take Mingh in after Trini's death and isnt even mentioned means that he's a deadbeat dad, adding more tragedy to trini's life. Or that Trini wanted a child but not the hassle of having a husband. That hurts Trini as a character, because it would mean that she's risking her life as a ranger when she should be prioritizing taking care of Mingh. She doesn't have to be a ranger, they could easily find a replacement for her. Trini lucked out that her friends would take care of her.
That's why it's an odd choice, because of the character implications and writing problems.

I think it paints Trini as quite a strong person. We see this through Mingh who is clearly extremely inspired by her mom. Trini had dedicated her life to being a ranger up until then so it would understandably be difficult to give it up especially since they had little to do until robot Rita came back. When I said realistic I meant relatable. People relate to a character who has lost a parent, even a single parent at that or who grew up in a one parent family. It’s good to give everyone something to relate to. It shows Trini as an incredibly strong person who wasn’t afraid that she might die as a ranger. I think the key is to show that regardless of what happened, Trini was strong, dedicated and inspiring which are traits you can see in Mingh.
One final thing, would you not argue Zack should give up his ranger powers then, considering he’s her guardian now and is in the same position Trini was. Otherwise surely he’s risking ruining her life even more? (Just to be clear I think Trini and Zack should have continued to be rangers, just playing devils advocate to your point.)

Some women choose not to take their spouse's surname. The lack of photos is a little odd but we can just as easily ask "why are there no photos of Trini and Minh together?" or "why are there no photos of Trini after her high school years?" For all we know it's entirely possible Trini was happily married and Minh's father died when she was very young.
There's another problem though. In MMPR we met several of Trini's family. Her parents, her uncle and her cousin. Yet Billy states that Minh "doesn't have anybody else." That means that all of Trini's relatives are either dead or estranged from her.

It has it's heart in the right place *BUT* the execution, direction, dialogue, performances (sans Walter Jones) and effects are really *cheesy* , subpar and cheap. Not in an endearing way.... more in a cringy way in our current HD 4K landscape. 👈👈 This is not something that will win over new fans, it just reinforces that Power Rangers is a dated relic of the 90s.
I mean, if you want to make new fans you shouldnt watch a nostaglia bait trip for a show that ended 30 years ago.

jasons actor had a legal nightmare, JDF said in his last appearance in dimension in danger that that was going to be his last apperance, and in November last year he passed, like it make sense why they weren't there

Maybe I'm alone in this, but you'd think a special meant to celebrate MMPR would have had more effort put into it. Everything from the sets and acting make it look like they had the budget of an episode of the original series. Nobody sounds genuine in the show, Yost especially. For whatever reason he sounds bored and disinterested in every scene, even ones that are supposed to be emotional.
The fight choreography both in and out of the suits is poor, not even on the level of the zyuranger fights.
Forever Red was a far better tribute for presumably a similar budget.

I like what they did with Trini's death. Minh's rage is certainly understandable. Though the fact she doesn't have a father brings up some questions. I like the pairing of Billy and Zack and I kinda wish that got played into them being a couple. Speaking of which, that one scene where Minh had to rescue that gay couple felt super pandering.
It's sad that JDF is no longer with us. We could have potentially had an MMPR/Zeo crossover (the OG MMPR team + Minh along side the Zeos). Maybe JJ will eventually be an onscreen character and maybe even inherit the Master Morpher.
I definitely would want to see Minh and JJ together sometime.

I was a bit stunned that despite Robo Rita literally blabbing to the rangers that she's going to the Dark Dimension to plan her next scheme...the rangers didn't do squat. Yes, I know they had just lost one of their own so going after Rita blasters in hand would've be smart.
However, ONE YEAR passed! We've seen Billy concoct devices capable of allowing the team to enter the Dark Dimension before (The Green Candle mini-arc) so why not connect with other rangers and go kill that bot?!
