Rain is rejuvenation, reinvigoration and renewal. It's never depressing. It represents a washing away so that new life and new beginnings may take hold. Its very similar to the wee hours of the morning as they are the hours of anticipation of the day ahead. It's the time of most opportunity, the liminal time. All futures for the day are bottled up on those couple of hours waiting to spring forth. I find those couples of hours almost synonymous with rain so that that may be why you enjoy them.
There is a scene in the 1980's film 'Diva" by Jean-Jaques Beiniex, shot in Paris in the rain, it's one of my favourite scenes from that movie, so relaxing and serene.
Not long ago i found out what this word is and its exacly what discribes me, and its one of the things that made me start photography. This is one of my favorite videos ever
It's exactly this kind of atmosphere that inspires me most to create music, and you are my favorite photographer/filmmaker for this mood, your work is simply stunning. I've also just acquired my Fuji x100V and I'm starting to capture night scenes, it's such an atmosphere, although it will never be perfect than the night atmosphere of Tokyo or Seoul, but I will go to these places to take photos and find inspiration. Rainy days in Tokyo are filled with atmosphere. Even though my camera and myself were soaked, I couldn't help but keep on wandering the streets and looking for just one more interesting shot - which there was no shortage of.
I like that your footage and images manage to maintain the humanity of the city even in the early hours and in the rain. Shops, bars and restaurants look like havens for human connection. The alleyways like small neighbourhoods in themselves filled with impromptu objects placed by residents and workers as though the street is an extension of their home. I started to find some night renditions by some photographers - eg, cough, L.W. - beautiful but dystopic and dehumanising. No smiling, no communication between people, just grim, lonely and anonymous figures dwarfed by neon structures. That’s not my experience of Tokyo or Hong Kong at all. The density and culture tends toward people having tight communities and an accommodative attitude. The cities aren’t perfect and of course there’s loneliness everywhere but they certainly aren’t the hellscapes of pain that some image makers seem to like produce. Just my 2c. Thanks
Thank you. That's an interesting observation. I never actually thought about it in this way. Maybe a part of it is that when I used to do the full neon cyberpunk style, I noticed that the (even) more extreme edits only work with silhouette lighting because otherwise your subject will just look completely alien with those edits. But I also don't think that kind of art style is even trying to be realistic, and usually works best in still images.

But, as you hint at, an individual character, rather than cyphers or types, or a smile or a suggestion of social solidarity would kind of break the spell of those pictures. Even where there is loneliness for some in the city, there’s also the hope of comfort, humour and joy. Being able to evoke all that at the same time is a genuine skill.
I dont see anything wrong with Rain and i think its inspiring to turn it into a cinematic way of watching a city being rained on and being creative…Peaceful to me too.

The reflections on the floors, cars, walls, and some other surfaces acting in some was as a cloudy mirror. Those fogged lights on the vehicles, neon lights and sime light posters, even on certain buildings with the inner light coming out, and the effect of dew or drizzle in front of traffic lights. With all that, which always generate a magical aspect, all the work you do with the selection of the place, moments and the edits make everything even more epic. Thanks again. Its really brings a cozy feeling mood watching this.
Gotta say I enjoy your color grading but I watch a lot of your videos with greyscale turned on too, always been a huge fan of high contrast black and white and your videos are PERFECT for that.
colorgrading reminds me a lot of the movie Watchmen or fightclub. Contrasts and sharpness is really nice too! :) For me - living in sweden, all the people living together in such a big city feels like unreal. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
