If I lived there I'd leave the kitchen open all day and only hide it while sleeping. But I think it's good you can close it because it makes the area feel calmer for sleeping. It might also block noises from the fridge a little bit ;)

On a day to day basis, a person living there would let the kitchen and the bed exposed all the time. It's not practical to fold and unfold everything all the time. I study on my bed, use the kitchen all the time to make coffee. And I actually think the apartment looks prettier and cozier with the bed and the kitchen exposed.

    • @Langenbacher

I had a studio with a foldable bed and I speak from experience that you are spot on! It's a hassle and also: those hinges will go sooner or later. On days when you are busy or sick you can't be bothered with "aesthetic appearances".

As people have said, when it's all closed up it feels like a waiting room. Some contrast colour to all the light wood would be nice somewhere, maybe an open vertical shelving segment, which would break it all up just a little bit

I'm not a fan when the whole main room is closed up, it feels too cold to me, personally I like it more with the kitchen open and I really like how the kitchen is recessed to make it feel separate, and the storage is so well thought out. The bathroom is a bit dark for my liking but I really appreciate that it's basically sound proof from the rest of the apartment, using a bathroom in such a small place can be a bit embarrassing if other people are around when you have stomach issues like I do lol all tiny apartments should have sound proof bathrooms

from this design inspires me that what makes a home as a home is the sense of "living-elements" like kitchen and bed, if all are hidden is just a spacial area with no temperature.

Nice job guys. I particularly liked the concrete floor and mirrored splashback as well as the appropriate choice of fittings / spec. for the space. I'd agree however with the earlier comment regarding the choice of dark tiles in the bathroom, just a personal preference I suppose. I thought the built in elements were nicely detailed and overall it looks like a well-considered bit of design. Cracking views too!

The places themselves are always so beautiful and I love hearing from the designers and how they made each design choice. I love all the hidden storage, and the idea of retrofitting and redoing preexisting apartments instead of just building something new. It's such a great touch how the architects kept some of the tiles from the original apartment and pulled that into other design choices. I feel like I have learned so much from your videos! I know that marine plywood is terribly 'on trend' but I'm not sure it 100% works here. Combined with the exposed concrete the space looks quite cold and sparse. I do like it, but it feels more like an exhibition space than a home. I guess if the space was dressed with different furnishings, art etc. it would feel completely different. Pull down beds I'm not a fan of, but I can see why you'd want it occasionally. However, the bed will likely spend most of it's time down, so as a designer, I think you have to start with that in mind and design around it.
The concertina kitchen door also looks like it needs some work :) it looks awkward to close, wobbly and not stiff enough? It could probably benefit from being engineered and fabricated with a different backing material/structure and some floor/ceiling guide rails. It looks like its just made from ply linked with hinges?
Sounds like I'm being super negative...I quite like the space, but with any small space, the devil is in the detail and the level of craftsmanship. Looks like they have gotten the space to about 90%. A few more touches and I reckon they're on to a winner.

    • @terrybaby6146

MEPR: "Combined with the exposed concrete the space looks quite cold and sparse."
I am not a designer, so I suppose the aesthetics (for want of a better word) escape me. However, I like it because it seems sleek and pared back, and extremely streamlined.
I also like the lack of clutter like "decorator items" such as pointless cushions.
      Everyone has different tastes,thankfully.
I would, however, like the bed to be automated.

Lovely space. I think I would have liked to have the kitchen as always exposed. The concertina doors are a bit of an eyesore and look to prevent the dish washer from opening completely. They also block a portion of the light coming from the side window and prevent the owner from using that area of the wall space. Great job though!

Never Too Small! This channel is valuable because it gives us the opportunity to witness how the role of functional and aesthetic priorities helps inhabitants and the designers they work with to form paradigms that in turn, inform design. If you've ever structurally renovated spaces - with your own mind and hands from the ground up - you'll find that at a certain point, a space and its limitations will guide you. Still, some problems require a trek into the inconceivable.
The most useful tools to those who are actually in it: paradigms. Loose principles/thoughts/ways of thinking that inspire us to solve problems in new and interesting ways while staying true to the non-linear qualities a true designer juggles alongside objective factors. This channel offers said paradigms direct, raw and fresh from the minds of experienced homeowners and designers. We're lucky to live in a time where so many are free and willing to share their insights on these matters, and the medium to do it is so readily accessed. From this one video, I have noted at least two very interesting thoughts I may end up using later on.
It is a double-edged thing though - as we can see in the comments. I find it more than a little predictable and boring to see personal taste comments framed as "rules" or "standards" when it's obvious this channel is about custom spaces that are not designed for anyone other than those who live in them. If it were possible to democratize design to a point where it satisfied everyone, there would be no more design, and everyone would have long since been lobotomized. Watching HGTV, painting a few rooms of your McMansion and curating posts you deem as "minimal" on pinterest and instagram isn't at all related - in any way, shape or form - to design thinking.
Try engaging in additive conversation rather than making tired, vague assertions with no intention of considering a response. Your personal taste versus this or any creative work in any medium is as pointless and devoid of context as a pickup line on some random person at a bar who you've targeted merely on aesthetics.
If you're truly interested in design, then eliminate themes of personal approval vs disapproval, as the world is more nuanced than a social media button implies. These fundamental shifts in thinking will help one to develop empathy and perception, and in turn, design sensibility. (Assuming you really do want to be a part of the conversation that is art and design, otherwise, curate onward.)

Very well designed. Love the hidden bed, but the only change I would have made there is, I would have incorporated a table at the bottom of the bed, instead of the free standing table taking up room. I would also have a couch that opened up to a bed for anyone who may want to stay.
The idea of light colors and skylights is great, with his ceilings, it seems so much bigger then it is, plus, the kitchen looks so nice, that I doubt I'd ever close it up, unless I were going away.
The bathroom is very cool, and given a lot of thought. The balcony makes for a good thought of space, along with the windows.
Honestly. I could live in this space and be happy, esp with the Bay nearby.
