      I’m looking forward to your comprehensive review! I’m curious how it stacks up against the Triumph 900 rally pro, which is still king in my mind as the best all around adventure bike.

      That's too bad you missed it, but family first always. I am seriously considering swapping my new gen Tiger 1200 RP for one of these and looking forward toyour opinion. I appreciate your straightforward reviews. Other journos cover the bikes, but they tend to sound more like promos and focus on only the positives / minimize the negatives. The Tiger 1200 is just too big and I can't get the ergos to my liking. I also find that I'm avoiding taking it on fun explorations because it is exhausting to manage in challenging terrain. The Ducati isn't light by any means, but it seems much physically smaller and much more balanced. I feel like it would be a much better fit with my riding preference. My only concern is getting it set up for my long legs and huge feet on slightly longer trips. Sitting on the bike in the showroom felt slightly cramped in the knees, but I think a high seat and pegs lowered 15mm or so would sort it out. But that's an expensive gamble...

      I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on this bike. I've never ridden a dirt bike before but I have a lot of experience on mountain bikes and street motorcycles. I've been wanting to hear your thoughts on how this compares to the Tuareg, Tenere 700, Africa Twin, 890 Adventure, and Multistrada. I'm thinking about getting one of these in the next 2 years to complement my Monster so I can ride dirt roads after riding on highways for several hours

    You did a good job Kase. If you don't mind me saying, Roman needs to fund you for some OR riding gear for the summer. Open face helmet with eye protection is how I mostly road on dirt and technical trails. Wearing a street oriented helmet with the face shield down, is an oven you don't need your head in. lol And there are of course light weight breathable jackets that can keep the dust off yet provide you some protection should you dump the bike. You are TFL's go to guy for dirt bike coverage reviews, might as well dress the part. 🙂

    I’ve test ridden it and it rides nice. The only thing I really dislike is the gearbox. I ride a current Ninja 1000 sx and I thought it’s Achilles heel was the quick shift gear box 1st to 2nd, a bit clunky. The Desert x is absolutely agricultural 1st to 2nd, it just feels metal to metal, violent sometimes, and not something that gives me confidence for longevity. So much so that I think it will fail down the road at some time. ( I hope it doesn’t ) Other than that I think it’s overall nice. Big bike though, makes my Ninja feel tiny.

    Thank you for the best review I have seen for a bike, and especially for this Desert X. I tested it myself, with experience of Africa Twin 1000, Husqvarna701, KTM500EXCF, this DesertX is excellent for sport adventure and touring. Better than Husky901. But 17k price is 3k too much in my opinion : the Tuareg660 at 12k is very close in capabilities and qualities. I could buy the DesertX at 14k but not at 17k.

      110 HP on the Desert-X vs 80 on Tuareg 660 though, that's not nothing.
      But I wonder if the Desert-X will have heat problems? (roasting of the crotch)
      These launch reviews always under-emphasize issues like heat and wind management.

    Looks like a great bike for the experienced rider, what beginner bikes does Ducati make?

    • @ErxEestlane
      @ErxEestlane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't really have any that are "cheap" but for beginners their 800cc Scrambler would be a solid option. For any beginner though, recommend anything low CC (350?) and used. It's more fun to be able to wring the thing out (hence lower cc) while you're learning at legal speeds, and as a beginner you'll likely go through several bikes before you find your preferred styles, so might as well go used and not eat the depreciation. YMMV.

    a top of the line suzuki 1050 costs as much. By the time you get the tech pack etc.. on a KTM 890 - you'll be pretty close. Not a value leader, but not out of the norm. My guess; If it does well, ducati will start raising the price in 10% increments - maybe offering new paint....

    Great Review. Don't worry about going down off-pavement it can happen to most experienced. It's a great looking adventure bike and the performance of Ducati motorcycles are very good. The issues I have with Ducati that would keep me from buying this bike. 1st the dealer network is much smaller than the competition. 2nd Ducati's tend to be thirsty in comparison. 3rd Ducati's maintenance cost. Ask a Ducati rider what the cost of a valve check/adjustment for their Desmodromic Valvetrain is. and last the price compared to its competitors. by engine size its biggest competition is the KTM 890 Adventure ($13,399) or R version ($14,599), The Honda African Twin ($14,499) and the Husqvarna Norden 901($13,999 if you can find one). If you're the adventure rider that wants to spend more time off-road my chose is the 890 Adventure R.

    • @henrietn
      @henrietn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea. People tend to forget about their expensive desmo maintenance. I would reckon between 800-1200 euros for the service. After 3 times...you can buy a small new motorcycle for that money. I got a guzzi v85 and can do the valve maintenance myself. Takes 10 minutes

      Critical thing - tall riders like it while standing up. Sitting down it's a bit tighter and I would prefer it if I had a couple inches less inseam. But then my legs are long enough to flat foot it with my feet a good 18 inches to either side of the bike. Basically every bike feels cramped when I'm sitting, with maybe the exception of the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE, or my KTM 500 EXC-F with the SC Tall XL comfort seat and pegs lowered 20mm.

    Good review Kase!! It’s a very nice bike. A little too expensive for my blood, but really nice for those who are true fans. Heck, I’m a true fan of the KLR650,,,,, hahaha. You could buy about 3 of them for one of these!! Destroy the first one learning, get the next one for skills improvement and the 3rd for a family member or friend to accompany you!! Haha. I know,that’s not realistic either.
    The Tech on the bike is almost getting necessary on the Adventure bikes as the power keeps climbing and is enough to definitely exceed the bikes capabilities in some circumstances. I like the setting options as well.
    The trails are fun and well enough kept you could even take a Ryker Rally on them. The Rally with the rear drive wheel in the middle of the two fronts can be unreasonable on two track, it can be awkward and rough as h*ll with the rear tire on the middle ridge. If you ride offset, then the front end takes a beating. With the Fox remote reservoir shocks, it’s never too bad though. I would fall all over the place on 2. Wheels now due to neurological issues, but still enjoy what I can on the Ryker.
    Stay safe out there Kase and Alex!!

    Nice first impressions. Enjoyed the video. Personally I'm not sure I can take any 'adventure' bike seriously that needs crash bars to prevent catastrophic failure in the event of a drop. The whole point of the bikes to tour long distance across all roads and terrains, which will inevitably involve drops along the way. Think travelling across Africa (this is trying to invoke the spirit of the old Dakar after all), South America etc... I will be interested to see what the common issues/damage is when these are dropped.
