  • In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll talk more about the cost of living in Italy. In the last episode on this subject, we spoke about Italian cell phone and internet costs. In this episode, I'll go over some prices you might be able to expect and I will also talk about some background information regarding utility bills in Italy, rent in Italy, and the cost of food in Italy. For the individuals thinking about living in Italy, it's worthwhile considering what life in Italy can cost before making the move to Italy.

    It also varies if you consider Northern Italian prices vs. Southern Italian ones: life in Milan and Veneto costs generally more than life in Naples or Palermo. In general, the more you go South, the more life is cheaper

    I'm glad you are feeling better :) BTW, somehow I have an impression that some products are more expensive in little local stores, but on the other hand, people are so used to buy there, they still don't want to switch to lidl or esselunga... My neighbour (80 y.o.) said she would never cheat on her favorite bakery cause that was the place her mom was buying bread for years ... I like these big stores. That helps to save a bit while your budget is limited and other fees can be high.

      I was just thinking the same thing. Whenever people say Italy is expensive for Americans to visit, I always shake my head and reply, “It’s not more expensive than California.” I just bought ground beef for $7 per pound. That’s $15.40 per kilo as well. 🤷‍♂️

    • @k.johnson1256
      @k.johnson1256 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      (I understand it’s expensive for Italians but if you’re an expat American from California for example, it would seem cheaper, especially the rental prices. A tiny *studio* apartment just in Sacramento is $1,100 per month.)

    you can drink faucet water in Italy and feel good the same, but Italians yes do buy bottled waters.. for safety probably. Take advantage of going out as soon as you can, and always keep distancing about that..

    The prices of food vary a lot according to the location not much in terms of ”latitude" but much more in terms of dimension of the city or town, because this affects the number and dimension of shops and supermarket, even in shopping malls, and this affects the costs of transport of the food and other goods. In little towns you usually pay less for housing, but you pay more for food and goods.

    Really informative info! I cut my expenditure in Milan by a third after mortgaging a property Vs renting. The rent here is like London but the assets are surprisingly cheap (relative to London)! I was paying €1600p/m for a 2 bedroom in the centre, my mortage is now around €600p/m

    I'm glad to see you up and about. Why don't you put the podcasts on Patreon for your members? I don't think you can compare the food in the US with Europe. There's so much crap used in and on the food in the US. It's not as much as where you grow the food, although, that does make a difference. It's the variety of the vegetable. For example, the type of carrots raised in the States is sweeter than the ones over here. Baking potatoes are a huge thing for me. For some reason, they don't have Russet potatoes over here. We get gas and electric bills once a year, and they tell you how much to pay each month. I'm so glad you mentioned heat. I will need autonomous heating. From what you said, the subway in Stuttgart is more expensive than the bus system in Südtirol. Rent also seems less expensive.

    Scrivo in italiano, perché son scarso con l'inglese. Visto che hai deciso di vivere in Veneto, non so se tu l'abbia fatto finora, ma ci sono un sacco di libri (anche in inglese) sulla storia della SERENISSIMA (la Repubblica di Venezia), storia che è durata circa 1000 anni, che ti possono dare una visione del perché il Veneto è fatto così e del perché ci son leoni alati un poco dappertutto. Spero ti sia utile come suggerimento. Grazie per aver scelto il Veneto e l'Italia in generale, Buona Vita.

      @@sohaibalvi4410 🤔 well that depends on what you’re interested in and also the rules for that area for this weekend... for example even though Veneto is yellow it’s a restricted yellow and no travel in our out other than for necessary travel... probably the best choice is somewhere close to home
