In particular, the prices of packaged dishes are discounted after a certain amount of time has passed. If you visit a Japanese supermarket after 7 p.m., you'll notice that many dishes are sold at half price. These products have no problems in terms of taste and, of course, hygiene. When visiting Japan, be sure to check out the supermarket closest to your location, as it's cheaper than using a convenience store.
We traveled as a family of 4 plus grandma to Japan in the spring. We went grocery shopping almost everyday since we rented a house and we were SHOCKED at how cheap everything was compared to our home grocery store. Honestly was such a highlight of our trip!
@@missplainjane3905 I found the quality to be really high. We cooked at the house a fair amount but we also got a lot of fresh made food at the local grocery store made that day by chefs at the store. Both the ingredients and the ready to eat meals tasted very fresh and they seemed of high quality.

I LOVE the small grocery portion sizes in Japan. As a household of 2 we get frustrated in the US when we only have bulk produce options/the smaller sizes are more expensive.
I’ve always been under the impression that fresh produce and other things such as meat are more expensive in Japan but after watching your video I realized that is not always the case. Two things: I’m from Ontario, Canada and I can definitely say that I would spend less on groceries in Japan than I do at home for most items and get far better quality, lol. And two, I love how things seem to be sold in smaller packages meant for one or two people which is so perfect as a single person-everything here is geared towards multi buys and large quantities so I end up paying for way more than I actually need. Thank you for sharing this video with us, I love getting in for like this.😊
In Japan's hot and humid climate, plastic bags are essential.
Since there are many unmarried single people, the package will be in small quantities.

There are Bloomberg & Reuters articles about American cattle ranchers losing market share in Japan to Canadian & Australian ranchers, after the US withdrew from TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) trade pact. Japanese consumers usually eat beef imported, because supply for Japanese Wagyu is limited; Japanese Wagyu is a special-occasion treat. Your discovery of Aeon having a cattle farming operation in Tasmania/Australia is interesting, and for me means (probably) that they like to have an integrated business to control & maintain quality standards.

AEON were already buying all their beef from Tasmania when I shopped there in 2005-2006 (i.e. a decade before the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement). My local Jusco had a video on a loop of Tasmanian cows on one of their ranches, and a signed letter from the Premier of Tasmania, translated into Japanese. I believe one of the reasons (at the time anyway) was that unlike European and US beef, Australian beef had no evidence of BSE (mad cow disease) so was one of the few places you could import beef from.
Ausie beef has established itself as not expensive but respectable beef option at this point. Some people will specifically go for them because of the balance of price and quality, like me.

From Seattle, WA and the prices here are insane. If I wanted that sushi platter it would be at least US$70.. I just bought 3 sumo oranges two days ago for US$13. 🤦🏻♀️ The bentos are usually US$12.99 and dont even look as good or fresh! 😩
When I was small, there was Kellogs used to sell both the regular Corn Flakes and Frosted Corn Flakes in Japan. (Guess which the kids liked).

The only reason the prices are so low for Americans is because of the weakness in the yen, from about 100y to the dollar to 150y for $1 in less than 3 yrs. What happens if it goes back to 100y or even 80y, as it was a few years ago 😂😅 PS, this young lady is a valley girl?

I'm Japanese. As in other countries, Japanese supermarkets range from cheap shops to very luxury stores. Even though it's the same product, the price is different. The supermarket in this video is common in Japan. Also, if you value quality, you can't underestimate the street fish stores, butcher shops, vegetable and fruit specialty stores, and tofu shops. Of course, they can't speak English, but they teach them very politely, and of course they are very careful about hygiene. It is not recommended to buy fresh food cheaply in Ameyoko without enough knowledge.

I do think it’s worth mentioning that all the prices you verbally list are BEFORE tax. So… the prices are actually more than what you say. Japan only adds the 10% GST at time of purchase! 😊😊
Do they tax food? Here in Michigan USA there is no tax on food.
Yes, in Japan tax is applied to everything, unless there’s a tax exemption)like tax free shopping for tourists). You can see in the video two prices listed; the cheaper, often larger price on the label and the smaller price. The smaller price often on the right hand side of the label, is the true price, with tax applied.
@@simplyorganizedlife3935 a small correction: foods to take away are taxed 8% in Japan, although it doesn't help us very much. (if eat at restaurant, it's changed 10%.)
Long time I didn’t like japanese supermarkets use lot of plastics but I realized recently, they recycle all. So, it might be not so bad ..

198 yen isn't so bad that's 1.33 USD. Apples here are roughly 1-3 USD depending on what kind, sometimes 4 USD. Considering that it's local, it looks better than some American supermarkets that people complain have "plastic fruit," and other harmful stuff out of the country.
12:52 We sadly don't sell anything like that. The most we have are smaller (like four to five pieces at the most) for 11-15 USD.
19:40 That's the average in the USA. it's roughly 1.31 USD, which is common for those brand names. The cheaper ones are Yoplait or store brand. The ones I normally buy are like 1.21
20:22 The yellow yolks compared to the Japanese ones are because of the quality. Yellow is usually lower and you have no idea how they raised the hens. While in Japan, they go through strict guidelines compared to the USA which is why people can eat them raw with no problems compared to the USA. We cut a lot of corners in the USA
The cereal, pads, and toilet paper suck though! I know the USA has a lot of sugary cereal but we have healthy options too more so than granola and corn flakes.

The produce is similar cost to my area of Canada but the snack foods are way cheaper.
Supermarket prices in Greece are pretty much the same. The bigger differences are in meat and fish. Japanese is way cheaper. Even though we share a very different culture around fish. Here we mostly buy freshly caught straight from the fishermen, which is very much expensive, or the most affordable option is buying frozen which I think is still more expensive that the Japanese supermarket prices. The bento food and snacks is ridiculously cheap in Japan. But bottled alcohol...damn it's expensive in there. Everything else (rice, dairy, eggs, hygiene products) are pretty much the same. But I really don't know if the cost of living is similar in both countries to make an actual comparison with the 2023 stats and inflation. In here it feels like the prices went astronomically high. For a family of 4 the cost of groceries went up ~100% from 2019. But monthly income of minimum wage (which the majority of people earn) went up only by 20%.
In the USA that bottle of Woodford is $40 - $14 more expensive here than in Japan!

For that beef, Aeon probably brought the cow farm here in Tasmania and send it to Japan when the cow is ready with a good deal for export/import tax.
Many people who do not know the daily life in Japan are surprised at the amount of plastic used for food products, but if you have a chance, please tell everyone that we try to recycle as much as possible, as garbage is classified into burnable garbage, non-burnable garbage, glass, ceramics, and recyclable garbage, instead of just throwing it all together. If you have a chance, please let everyone know that we try to recycle as much as possible.
When you put out the garbage, you should also wash the containers before putting them out.
Many small packages help prevent overeating.
Also, small packages of rice, etc. are ideal for camping. Solo campbings are very popular in Japan right now, so they are very convenient.

What was the most shocking price to you??
For me it was expensive for little portions plus good luck walking or taking the train back home carrying 1 or 2 tote bags of groceries unless you have a bike, I lived in Kyoto for 1 year.

The bento prices are just insane! Here in Germany, a premade meal at the supermarket with this variety would cost at least 3 times more.

The Aeon you went to is a bit expensive. Aeon stores differ in prices by location.
I use OK Store and Gyomu Super for my groceries which is much cheaper, for the same quality.
Eggs: unlike in Western countries, Japanese mainly eat eggs raw.
Because if this, ALL eggs in Japan are washed in a Hypochlorous acid solution to kill off any salmonella bacteria.

So, my family used to live in Japan for about 6yrs. Those prices are a steal. That wagyu beef you showed for 1495 yen is about $11 dollars. Even the premium fruits are decently priced compared to if you bought them here in the US. The price would go up quite a bit.

As a person of Japanese decent, I appreciate the fact that Japan FINALLY moved away from using the pree sales tax price, so we do not have to calculate anymore. But I have a question, I see that there still fluctuates two prices on the price tag, can someone explain what the other higher price is? Is it still some kind of tax? I thought they changed to rules, so stores had to include all taxes and the price you see is the final total amount? Can someone explain? I don’t live in Japan..

While I am Australian I can’t really comment on the tax arrangement between Australia and Japan for exporting beef… but I can tell you that Japan or Aeon has selected the best part of Australia to rear the cattle/cows. Tasmania is known as Australia’s bread basket because of the superior quality of all farmed goods. 😊 xox A Melburnian
i looked it up, a place called Robbins Island (northwestern tip) have been breeding waygu exclusive since the early 90's. Theres an entire story on their website about their breeding process, genetics and marbling scores.
the prices are quite similar to british grocery stores here, you can find 20 slices of bread for 70p (127yen) and 1L milk for £1.45 (263yen)

Yeah no this makes me want to move to Japan. America's prices are crazy just add like 8-10 onto anything right now. Whole milk is about 6 dollars now and diapers are about 55$ for 120. It's nuts (oh this is in Washington state)
You pay more in fruit and veggies but make up for it in other items. I checked on the Waygu beef, and my local grocery store in Lancaster, PA sells a .12 pound (54.43 grams) strip steak for $26.40.

How long did it take you to figure out the price difference going from the dollar to the yen?
Pre-made sushi locally in Phoenix purchased at a Kroger store cost $14.99 for 12 nigiri. But the quality of the fish and shrimp tends to vary along with how the rice is seasoned.
There is a small sushi set of six pieces for $10.99.
im going to Japan for 1 month and I have a bit of a tight budget but I swear I will eat sushi every day on every meal bc a super lame amount of sushi in my country costs the same as those premium platters x_x
At Sushiro, Hama Sushi, and Kura Sushi, prices per meal range from $8 to $12 (salmon or tuna).

Just going by the 2 chicken breast alone as an example. 633yen works out around £3.48 which isn’t horrendous compared to the U.K. I checked 2 stores I regularly shop at here and they average out at £2.60 for 2 chicken breasts.
Difference is the size, I’d be more than happy to pay that for those size chicken breast

Alcohol and cigarettes are taxed to extreme levels in Australia, for example Jonnie Walker Green you looked at was JPY 4,980 and in Australia try JPY 8,700 ! Unfortunately you can't buy sushi / fish packs in supermarkets to compare and couldn't help but notice no electronic security tags on the high end meats which is commonplace here in larger supermarkets. Great informative video .
I worked for a Japanese company (In Australia) for 30 years and our company owns Rangers Valley Beef which is in New South Wales (Australia) and export beef to Japan, it’s VERY expensive to buy also here in Australia and they only sell it at a few places in Queensland where I live……..

I live in Australia and I’m shocked how cheap the eggs are in Japan. Our currency is pretty much on parity (AUD 1 = JPY 100) and the free range eggs I buy are $13-16 for a dozen. Our fish/seafood is also more expensive, but our beef is cheaper. Excluding the fancy fruit and bentos, I think everything else is pretty similar.
Wow.. I have never paid that much for eggs in Australia. Supermarket eggs are about $5.50 a dozen.

4580 yen is $30.42 in USD for seafood. For beef steak 1773 yen is $11.78 USD. I can't believe that was for 1 steak just over an ounce 😮. The chicken prices were so much better.
The yogurt is insanely cheap in Japan. The coconut yogurt here is easily triple the cost. I live in San Diego California.
If you and ur husband like shrimp. I would buy that little shrimp and fry it up with scrambled egg. It's quite yummy! It's a Chinese dish.

With the exception of dairy, potatoes and beer everything seems to be 30% cheaper than here (🇩🇪). Seafood and the premade bento boxes are INSANELY cheap 😳 .. With those prices I probably would stop cooking myself .. Alcohol is about the same, too

I would say everything looks comparable or cheaper than the US when I do 100Y to 1 USD in my head, and then with the current low yen rates everything seems quite cheap. The quality of the items looks much higher though. Some things, like mushrooms, seem much cheaper, but fruits are a bit more expensive, nothing crazy though.
Milk is much much more than the US
AEON supermarket's price differs wildly from area to area. This place is really expensive. My neighborhood AEON is like 20-40% off from this.

This video is great! I love the variety of fresh food, especially seafood. We should also take into consideration the median salary in our respective countries. In the US it’s $89,000 while in Japan it’s $45,000.
Our groceries are double if not triple price right now compared to Japan if anything is a little more is the produce but everything else is cheaper in Japan then the USA
