So many great memories of playing this game on my first PC my parents got for me. I was so afraid of those characters, yet I played this game during night time and somehow finished it after many months
Ahhh, Heretic!!!! I played it when I was a child in 90's. Veeeery scary (I remember the last boss even today, like I have played it yesterday). I love the Ethereal Crossbow and the Phoenix Rod (one shot = one kill). The Mace empowered mode was awesome, too (guided explosive iron bombs!!!!). Best game in its time in my opinion, better than Doom. Nice revival.
The final boss is D’Sparil, the first of the serpent riders according to the trilogy lore. You can meet him only once at the end of the game, he’s riding a monster serpent in the beginning of the battle

You should take a look at something called Amid Evil. Supposedly it's like Heretic, though it isn't quite released yet. I came here to see what Heretic is like since I've never seen it or played it.

The only reason I hesitate to call it better than Doom or Quake is purely because of how iconic they are; objectively I think it improves and has perfected every single aspect of game design that make these types of games so memorable. Seriously, it's that good.

I used to make my own maps for this, eventually making one great map set in a huge valley, with a haunted house, cathedral and Spanish Galleon and loads of traps. You'd start in the cathedral defending from a huge army of creatures and setting the traps off to help yourself out. Great days. Apparently Phil Spencer (CEO of Microsoft games) really wants someone within Xbox Game Studios to make a new Hexen game. Personally I got bored of all the puzzles slowing down the Hexen gameplay, much preferred Heretic (and then Unreal - the first campaign heavy one before it became 'tournament' - Duke Nukem 3d, Daikatana, Blood, there were so many...
Heretic and Hexen came out about the same time, were very similar games, and more or less a similar setting. I never could tell the two apart. One of the two had a giant bell in an open are near the start of the game which you had to ring. To this day, I hve no idea what it did.

This game was based upon the Doom / Wolfenstein platform and was a real 🏆 winner in my view.... Loved to play this back in the day on my old Acer computer with that big old monitor 😂✅🤎
My friends and I loved and played the shareware version basically on repeat. I don't think it had any sound, for some reason, which made it so eerie and cool. Great atmosphere, playing it on spooky, overcast days in our old study.

Doesn't matter as the WAD file basically contains the whole game, you just need to tell Doomsday where it is. Under the settings tab of your game profile there is a line called "Game data file" just press the "..." and search the WAD file. Hope that helps :)

Riddle me this…I turned 21 while living in Ca (March 1994). However, before living there, I lived in Richmond, Va where I used to play this game on a roommates computer… The release date on Wiki says Dec 1994… Hmmmm…. Did I time travel somehow?
You need the original game files or atleast the .wad file so doomsday can read the data. Then you can start the game through doomsday engine with any updated gfx you might choose.

I miss these games. These mappers were gods, pure creativity. Now they just make a pretty place that you walk through without a thought. Multiplayer maps are still pretty good, but most single player maps focusing on visuals over gameplay is _heresy_ I say
But man, seeing this game makes me think if someone were to make something similar to Elder Scrolls or Might and Magic in this engine or with this look.
So this game or Skyrim? Both are 49$ at the moment and I can't make up my mind. Skyrim seems to have more dungeons, but the visuals and the shooting seem way better in Heretic, although I'm not sure if it will run well on my GTX 970...
