For all these people say she is not mild Intellectual Disabled she had probably rehearse the speech over and over again for many days and she would had more IQ test for special Olympics. She is a great and inspiration and advocate for people with disability. I have a mild intellectual disability.
Some days I tell my husband "don't even bother talking to me, I won't make sense and I won't understand". Then somedays I can do my advocating and even do a video. I might have to delete it when I speak gibberish and not realize it or have a sezure, but typically, if it's a good day, then I can do my talking.. Kindness has flown out the window on Social Media. We still are affected by what is said about us and I highly doubt anyone would appreciate something being said about them - they are embarrassed about.
My first job was at a corner store and Loretta would come in at least 3 times a week and stay for a few hours and just chat to us and the guests coming in. She is one of the smartest most beautiful and straight forward souls you would ever have the pleasure of learning from.
Loretta moved me. Right now I am going through this with my son. My son has a learning disability and behavioural issues. In America, they treated my son like he couldn't learn and they put him on a IEP that made no sense. Now he is 9 in the Caribbean functioning great. He achieved an 83 in school. I always tell him he can do it. And I tell him that nobody will feel sorry for him. And he has to get up and go.
This is awesome. I have cerebral palsy with dysarthria which is a speech impediment and that's my real disability. I was born in 1973 and I was one of the first people to participate in inclusionary learning in my school district. All my high school classes were college track and today I have a Master's from Dartmouth College. It's incredible how your mom really advocated for you like my mom advocated for me. I wish every parent could do what your mom did. I've worked with people who have intellectual disabilities for 15 years. The job is a good match. My needs are their needs and their needs are my needs. I agree that if we don't have healthcare, we don't have Anything.
I'm in the same boat. My kid tested right above at the end of 7th grade. At the end of 7th grade he tested intellectual disabled. I was hurt! Because I felt I pushed him too hard .
I've had a mid intellectual Disability since I was little. Basically I understand some things but, some other stuff is hard. But at least I have my family and friends. Just be who you are. And don't give up on your own dreams. Because God made everyone special, don't be afraid of who you are. Have a great night guys. Also I'm 22 years.
I have a Mild intellectual disability aswell! I’ll be 22 in September. I also am leagally blind in my left eye do to a rare disorder called Congenital Nystagmus which till this day can’t be cured. I do however have a highshool diploma & I work as a sales associate at a retail store.
@@alexanderburton6256 twin zees your amazing my friend stay safe and well. I’m almost done with my first book and I’m very excited about it. Just believe in yourself and you’ll go far.
Well said Loretta! I have been bullied all my life for being slow, unable to comprehend, and gullible! And when bullies see that I am slow and have the physical attraction that beats thier'? They are able to beat me out of the friends and jobs I long for! It must stop! Love is the key! I just hope others can see that before resorting to the violent way of the bully.
+marie19872 I am autistic too but I don't have intellectual disability. I watched this video because I want to learn more about people with intellectual disabilities
I have high functioning autism, and I have symptoms of being slow at learning motor skills, I don't even know how to ride a bike lol, don't know if that counts though.
I cry every time I watch this video!!! 😭. Thank you so much, Miss. Claiborne!!! You have truly inspired me!!! I also have a mild intellectual disability. You are my inspiration and my hero!!! God bless you!!! 🙏🏽❤️😊😊
God Bless You !! My daughter was just diagnosed with a Mild Intellectual Disability .I was afraid what [people will say or think or do .You have put my mind at ease .Bless you and thank you so very much !
I have the same thing, at first I thought it was a curse and wouldn't tell no one, because of shame and embarrassment. However now I try to embrace it. Blessing to you and your daughter 💜😊
I'm so proud of you Loretta for being fearless. I work with students with intellectual disabilities & I hope to instill in them to be fearless & never give up.
Honestly what this woman is saying this is the truth was going on all my life I was denied for everything well at least she try harder that shows you that no one care about disabled people not even to school
She came to my school 2 years ago so now I'm really inspired by her. She also let me watch her movie and it was really sad. I even got to give her a high five so I feel special now lol.
mwhpaluch You’re confused actually. Borderline personality disorder and borderline intellectual disability are not the same thing. BPD is a disorder categorized by having multiple personalities regardless of IQ. Borderline Intellectual Disability is defined as ones IQ being around 70-85 range.
@@alexschmidt2895 borderline personality disorder doesn't mean you have multiple personalities, that's dissociative identity disorder. bpd involves unstable emotions, relationships, and sense of self, which sounds similar to "multiple personalities" but isn't exactly the same

Yes that is very true. Autonomy, responsibility and expectations is the Tribeca of barrier to support. You pretty much have to sell your soul to the government.
This is so inspirational! My son has intelectual disability and auditory processing disability and add! They’re telling me next year he should be in special school next year for high school.instead of being at a regular high school with special edd classes! Idk what to do
Best of luck to your son. And depending on where he's at on the intellectual disability spectrum, make sure he will get a high school diploma from that school, and not a certificate of completion. Colleges don't accept those. I had an intellectual diagnosis during school too. I had to make sure I kept up with all the regents and my classes in order to get a regents diploma, and not a IEP diploma (what they used to give in NYC back in 2008 ) They wanted me to get the IEP diploma. They made it their business to only sign me up for RCTs. In NYC back then passing RCTs was enough to get an IEP diploma, but taking regents and scoring a certain percentage you would get a regular diploma, and a higher percentage on five regents you'll get a regents diploma.
awesome story and having a learning difference myself I herd that I would never go to college but I am in college studying to become an early childhood teacher I want to work with children who have autism and other special need

I applaud this woman and her courageousness to speak up for the intellectual disability community. However, I am also skeptical about Special Olympics, which has done a poor job of integrating individuals with intellectual disabilities into mainstream society and also that it has created negative stereotypes of individuals with disabilities---often infantilizing them or pitying them.
I have a friend who was in special olympics and he loves it. They treated him well. Now he works as a bar back. People need exercise and sometimes intellectually disabled people can’t handle the strict rules of mainstream competitive sports.
