First look at the DeHavilland Canada DHC4 Caribou in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • We take the De Havilland DHC-4 Caribou for a first test flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking off in truly awful conditions at Boonville, then switching to a nice sunny day for a touch-and-go, followed by some radio navigation over to Ukiah. Wonderful aircraft!
    NOTE - Apologies for saying the aircraft is free during the video - of course it's not free - but it costs far less than many other aircraft in the simulator!

    I was stationed at Vinh Long Army Airfield in 1968 and 1969 as a member of the 1st Air Cavalry. We had a 3,000 foot runway and used to watch the Caribou pilots take off after they dropped their load. They would get off the ground at half the runway length, level off at 20 feet, clean up the gear and flaps, build airspeed, then stand the thing on the tail until they ran out of airspeed around 2000 '. It was standard practice to avoid ground fire.

    If one was a Vietnam Veteran "dull as dishwater" wouldn't be a term used. These are 'sacred' to those who flew in them and stir emotions, just as the Huey does. They were a great aircraft in military service and it was a sad day for veterans here in Australia when they went to museums or the scrapyard, although I believe at least one is still flying here as a heritage aircraft. I don't think anything has yet replaced the Caribou for fixed wing battlefield operations, due to it's amazing short field and off strip abilities. Thanks for your demo of this wonderful aircraft, and thanks to Asobo for including it. There may never again be the likes of the Caribou (the Buffalo was a derivative).

      I don't. Do you know why? I will enlighten you a little bit here. When Asobo release halfbaked addons, I mean half good....okish....you know....think....Serious 3rd party developers will not make those addons themselves because obviously too much of the market is already filled. Instead of having a good developer deliver us a study level dhc-4 caribou we have to settle with this...this dull flying on rails half ass half good product that you will get tired of in a week. Who would you rather have making addons.....asobo or milviz/pmdg etc? Ohhh, i think i know your answer....you prefer asobo addons.

    p.s. turns out you CAN reverse the propeller pitch. Use the 0-100 axis on the throttles, and set neutral to 50 in the sensitivity settings :) Also - it's NOT FREE. I mis-spoke towards the end of the video.

      You can also set a button to reverse thrust, or pull back on the actual handle in the sim which will force it into reverse. Its a pain though and doesn't seem to work that well. My problem is that little garmen just won't work.

      I thought that the "free" plug was a strange comment. Perhaps it's free to prolific producers of sim review videos?

    Hi Jonathan. I’m kinda like you when it comes to MSFS. Watching my computer flying a computer is not really my thing. I love the Caribou. Keep flying using VOR’s and NDB’s. Glad that the GPS unit is out of the main views. There is still something that is puzzling me. The instrument under the IVSI and to the left of the de-icing panel as a needle that I have no idea where it’s pointing to. I did some test flight changing VOR frequencies on VOR 1 and 2, NDB 1 and 2, but it doesn’t seem to affect it. Maybe you can help on that one. Tks.

    I love this sort of aircraft, but I think I should have watched this review ( and those to come from others ) before spending £12.49 on it. The lack of an autopilot is puzzling to say the least, and I can't really believe that the real-world aircraft lacks one. Just a rudimentary heading and altitude hold provided on a tablet would have been better than nothing - even Ant's Tiger Moth has that. The rest of the cockpit is good, and reminds me of the Aerosoft Catalina with all the glass around and above you. More functionality would have been welcome, such as opening windows, but I can live with that. Outside, it looks okay, though the dents and bumps are over done on the rear fuselage, and the textures aren't very sharp. I hope the modding community can gain access to the Caribou's innards, because while there is plenty to like about it, there's also plenty to wish for. 7/10 from me.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest, Ant's tiger moth shouldn't have had an autopilot. Remember there's always the AI pilot. I actually side with the developers on this one - if an aircraft had no autopilot, it shouldn't be there in the game. And no, the DHC4 didn't have an autopilot :)
      You do realise you can modify the config file of aircraft to add an invisible autopilot? :)

    • @paulkirkland3263
      @paulkirkland3263 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonbeckett I must say I am surprised the Caribou had no autopilot in real life - I would have thought they were a necessity for such an aircraft. How very odd. I was pleased Ant added the tablet 'autopilot' - it makes long distance flying in the Tiger Moth a bit easier for flight simmers, even if fictional.
      No, I wasn't aware that there is a config tweak to add autopilot functions - I will go and look that up. Thanks for the info!

    I mean half good....okish....you know....think....Serious 3rd party developers will not make those addons themselves because obviously too much of the market is already filled. Instead of having a good developer deliver us a study level dhc-4 caribou we have to settle with this...this dull flying on rails half ass half good product that you will get tired of in a week. Who would you rather have making addons.....asobo or milviz/pmdg etc? Asobo ATR so called expert level. What a load of crap that was. Milviz cancelled their plans for making an ATR because Asobo/Hans Hartmann spewed it out in record time making that so called expert level ATR. Lmao. Here is also what I see microsoft/asobo are doing wrong in the long run. Sure they can make a ton of money making half good addons and lots of people will buy it cause they have a casual approach to flightsim. They prefer to flood the market with "crap" so only they will dominate the market. What do you think of the fenix a320? Why would microsoft hire inibuilds to make another half good addon a320? They want to have the market flooding us with "crap" and hurt the good craftsmen who actually knows what they do. I dislike microsoft asobo a lot for this reason alone. They have time to make shit addons but no time to give us season textures or a good ATC in the sim. Go figure. Wake up dude.
