    There's actually a ratcheting tool called a power jack for the last pieces against the wall that butts them up tight so you can nail them...but unless you do a lot of wood floors it's kinda pricey.

    Interesting. Because when I read through instructions of almost every manufacturer, what they say is that 15.5 gauge nails or staples for solid hardwood flooring (3/4 inch), 18 gauge for engineered with 1/2 to 5/8 inches thickness and 20 gage staples for 5/16 and 3/8 engineered flooring. If the flooring has a HDF core, then floating or glue down only. But what do I know, I am not a contractor. I just do DIY projects here and there.

    the builder of my house installed this factory finished hardwood flooring and it is so soft, that rolling a computer chair around leaves tracks in the floor :( dropping anything really leaves dents in the floor...im pretty sure she got it from lumber liquidators, and my dad always talked bad about that place to begin with. not to mention these guys made some kind of mistake or lack of care in the subfloor so everything squeaks, creaks , booms, and cracks when you walk around. it really is something for a brand new house built last year

    • @garnhamr
      @garnhamr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's floating floors for you (not the softness though obviously). Best flooring is glued down Luxury vinyl tile, Karndean being the best looking in my opinion.

I just bought a condo in Annapolis, Maryland and I'm using all the techniques you demonstrated and applying them on fixing all the holes, scratches and attempted patchwork done by the previous owners. If the opportunity should arise, could you show the process of moving an already installed cable outlet on one side of the room, fishing it through the ceiling and down the other side of the room and the best way to cut holes and patching the ceilings?     Hi some questions so far;
    1. With engineered hardwood is it not a requirement/ good idea to leave some expansion space between the wall and the first row?
    2. You did not remove the trims or baseboard is is that okay because it’s engineered hardwood or is that just a choice to make no matter what material is used?
    3. I also noticed no paper or underlignment under the wood pieces, is this not required because it’s engineered hardwood?
    4. What the difference between the groove and tongues?
    5. What should be prepared prior to starting the project? Should this be opened to acclimate it days before?

    • @joshbrienen5133
      @joshbrienen5133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Engineered doesn't require as much contraction space, and it's mostly long ways.
      There is no baseboard in this video.
      Hardwood on good osb means no underlayment, unless it's second story, then use it for soundproofing.
      Tongue sticks out. Tongue goes into groove for tight fit.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In houses where you have conditioned space above and beneath the floor it is not needed. instead of glue I would just nail the board contrary to the joist. let the hardwood carry the load. Cheers!

    • @ericratynski

      Gluing solid hardwood is tough because of expansion and contraction. The bond of the glue will loosen causing squeaks. Solid hardwood is nail down only. Most manufacturers warranty calls for it.

    How many mm is the wood layer on top of the plywood? What is the average length of the board? How fine is the wood or is it full of knots?

    Thank you for the very informative tutorial. From the USA, I clicked on the link, clicked Decorner, but all they seem to have is vinyl. Can you please inform how to get directly to the engineered hardwood flooring? None of those search terms get me anywhere.

    My engineered floor is one year old and I have staples popping through in one joint. Do you know how I can reset those staples without damaging the top grove of the corresponding plank? I am guessing this is caused by the settling of the new home over the past year and the floor joisting is drying and shifting.

    You didn't go over that first row. Did you just lay it down and nail it down? Does it matter if you have concrete underneath?

    How did you move the vent location closer? Not sure what you did with the tin you snipped to size. Was the ducting just loose enough that you could move it over closer and attach the grille to it?

    Hey Jeff, I’m going to be installing bamboo flooring in my house over the next few months between work. Would the install be just with Brad nails into the tongue onto the subfloor or would I need to glue it down as well? I’m in northern Alberta so we get anything between -50c in extreme conditions to +35-40c.

    great video. I have 2 questions, 1. when you use st Pneumatic Brad Nailer to stable your first piece, how you avoid Thermal expansion and contraction for rest pieces? 2. why there is no spacer to put on at the beginning of the layout?

      engineered flooring does not require as much expansion room. 1/4" gap on the long side is plenty the wood usually grows in the same direction as the grain!

    OK... now I want the engineered hardwood for the non-wet areas.... But I have several quandaries...
    1) My house is so small that I am afraid that putting the hardwood in the LR, hall, and bedrooms, and then the SPC vinyl planks in the kitchen and bath will make the house look even smaller.... or goofy... mostly the kitchen to living room.... Plus the transition from thicker wood in LR to thinner vinyl planks in kitchen.
    2) How do I put the engineered hardwood in my concrete slab on grade home? I am assuming that I have to put a sub-floor over the concrete?
    3) How do I decide which way to run the planks.... (I should probably shoot a short video to illustrate) If I go with the hallway direction, it runs across the long axis of the LR/kitchen.... If I run it on the long axis of the LR/kitchen, it runs cross-ways of the hall... which I think would likely look "odd".

      long way down the hall using a construction adhesive. I would not be afraid to use it in the kitchen. It is not actually a wet area. Cheers!

      @ClayAutery 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks... I think I have decided to do the engineered wood everywhere BUT the bath and utility room, where I will use the SPC. That is assuming I can get "buy-in" from my lovely bride.
      LOL! OUR kitchen is frequently a "wet area"... something liquid is always getting spilled. BUT, I think if I do MY job properly on the install, I can keep the spills up and prevent spoiling the wood.
      Again, thanks so much!
