These were a pretty good sled new. The 81 was the last year for the 500 six port FA . That had a better reverse cam driven and a beefed up wide belt hex made only one year. It also had the rubber track off the 6000 lc. That helped top end and cut weight over the cleated tracks. Topped out about 85 on snow 90 mph on hard pack or ice. Now the engines 40 plus years old so ignition components usually need replacing. The days of cheap vintage parts are long gone.
All the Free Air El Tigre’s are collectible now. The older Free Air Zs and EXT racers bring good money restored. Always wondered how this better chassis would be with the 1973 650 EXT 100hp plus triple in it.
I have a 3000 Jag and it will have spark for about 2-3 pulls then it won't at all. Once in a while it will have spark but it's very rare. Let me know if anyone might know
Just spitballing right now but make sure they’re brand new plugs, check the coil wires, take the spark plug caps off and trim the wire back some and put the caps back on, you could do a resistance test on the coil, check the wires that come from the harness and go to the coil, test the stator while you’re in there, check the kill switch wires. Not sure if any of that will help 😅
Yep... thanks for the memories... mine was a 6000 cross country. Ive seen the CDI box go and it would take out the piston. When I think about it , I think the piston goes first then the CDI box goes. But they were thinking the CDI caused the blown pistons. Either way, it was an expensive day. The 5000 was a nice machine.
I have this sled with the same problem! Thank you so much!
