I saw this at a screening in Pasadena before it was released. It was 90% finished, some music, color correction wasn't done. Execs where in the theater. The audience gasped when he showed his dong. Still one of the best movies I've ever seen. Had to fill out a questiomaire after, gave it 5*'s each question.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that all the main characters are basically morons, but they're so friendly, cheerful, and even innocent despite their seedy profession, that you can't help but love them.
Yeah, I absolutely love this film which I never expected to because of the subject matter, and one of the reasons I love it is because of the characters in how well developed they and realistic in that they’re inherently flawed people. The characters and their arcs are really funny but also tragic in ways.
Given that Eddie was a high school dropout who didn't seem to have any friends and was so mild mannered and polite, I got the sense that he felt more comfortable being around adults rather than kids his age.
That's an interesting thought. Like he surpassed his peers. He gets along with the "big kids" because he's kind of sweet in the beginning. Not much ego and no arrogance. And then he surpassed his peers before the landslide.
He's probably an only child, as there aren't any other kids referenced or seen in his household. Only children often fare better with adults than kids socially
Perhaps the best ensemble cast ever?? Mark Wahlberg at his best, Julianne Moore being superb as always, Burt Reynolds with a great and restrained comeback role, the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman giving a great and realistic character performance, John C Reilly showing his drama chops and then rounded out by some really well-cast performers including Don Cheadle, William H Macy, Heather Graham, and Alfred Molina in a brilliant 5 minute role. It comes pretty damn close to the top of ensemble dramas.
This is cinematic art. The perfect storm of good writing, acting, and direction. It really makes me sad that some of the stars this movie regretted making it.

This movie came out when I was in 10th grade and we would often quote it and treat it as if t was some sort of comedy mostly because of the subject matter, not really understanding the darker subject matter and so forth.....It wasn't until I matured that I realized what an incredibly well made movie this is....I really stand in awe of several facets of this film whenever I view it in its entirety or even just clips of it as I just did....
It came out the year I was born and it’s my pick for the best film of 1997!! Incredibly well made and acted, I noted before in another discussion the two wildly different halves of the film give off a duality between youth and darkness, sort of like Full Metal Jacket in a way, although much more fun and quick-paced!

There was one of those "make a wish" things going on and they had assembled a number of celebrities for the event, and I happened to be there on that day. Of course, the whole thing was at a roped off pavilion with security, but when the cars began rolling in, the celebs would make a frantic run for the building. Burt didn't, he calmly walked over started shaking hands, and talked a bit. The event organizers actually had to send someone out to fetch him. Just thought that was cool as hell when I was 17.
It's funny...Reed is clearly initially threatened by the newer, younger (and better-looking) kid and wants to one-up him in a "This is MY turf kid, you're just a guest here", territorial kind of way, but Eddie comes off as so genuinely easygoing and likable that Reed can't help but take to Eddie by the end of the party...Eddie's dimwitted but "aw shucks" effortless charm has a way of winning people over very easily. Reed at this point just doesn't really have it in him to be a true dick anyway...the way he's acting towards Eddie at first isn't truly the "real" Reed. Obviously a MUCH different vibe than Dirk and Johnny Doe later in the film, where Dirk makes is abundantly clear that he has no interest in giving newcomer Johnny any chance at all, and has become fiercely protective of everything and everyone that he considers "his" (including his odd relationship with Amber...Johnny flirting with her poolside seems to be the last straw, as far as Dirk's concerned). Also worth mentioning is that his sudden "performance issues" likely had him feeling very insecure about maintaining his place at the top of the porn food chain.

The funny thing is, on first viewing it sounds like a rude remark, a deliberate mishearing of Jack's "new kid on the streets" comment to poke fun at what he correctly assumes to be Eddie's pathetic living situation. However, you quickly realize he's not that bright, and he honestly DID misinterpret the comment. Or maybe not, since he then challenges him to name his best lift.

I was aware of it through a friend recommending it years back, but I was like “Oh is this the one about porn??” since that’s all I knew about it so wasn’t expecting much! 😂 Absolutely love it though, one of the very best of films and a knock out of the park for PTA!
Sorta saddening to see people only knowing him from Step Brothers, dude was in some great dramas including this and Magnolia where he gives a really grounded performance! He was also in Scorsese’s Gangs of New York and The Aviator which is great for any actor to have on their resume!
There's never an outdoor shot in the daytime where you don't get that absolutely majestic California sunshine. Not a cloud. The quintessential California 70s dream. And all the 70s trappings to go with it. It's interesting because many of the actual California based movies from that era have an identical atmospheric feel. Perfectly recreated.
I was 17 when this came out. Loved this movie. The entire cast was 🤌🏻 I still watch it to this day. I laugh at myself because even though it’s been a while since I’ve seen it, I still remember the lyrics to the songs when he’s in the studio recording with Reed. 😂

PTA's direction was flawless for me. Superb movie.

I’d say 9 is a bit too young given the subject matter and material haha, but I agree it’s a great film! I watched it during Lockdown in 2020 on Netflix, my friend had strongly recommended it years back, and all I knew was that it was “the film about porn”, but it far exceeded my expectations as one of the best films I’ve seen! I must have watched it damn near 100 or so times!
Oh my god, THAT scene, Jesus I was literally anxious the whole time and knew things were going to go really bad, I was freaking shouting for them to get the f**k outta there, and shouting when Todd was going all stupid with the botched deal and the attempted robbery! Not to mention when Rahad Jackson was playing Russian Roulette and they were shouting at him to stop!
It’s funny most of my generation only really know him from Step Brothers when the dude was in some great dramas a decade beforehand (including being in three Best Picture nominees in a year, the only actor to do so, along with a Supporting Actor nomination).
Love how they worked Star Wars into it. And in a funny way. Does he really look like Han Solo? 😂 I saw Star Wars about 4 times in the theater in its original run as well. Would have been even more except I was young so my parents had to take me and they were getting sick of it.

Every character is someone who feels like they need to accomplish something in life and has fallen into a profession that could destroy them. they are all charming and vulnerable in their own ways and Anderson makes you root for them
This is easily his best performance, literally nails Eddie/Dirk’s naivety and innocence which morphs into narcissism and addiction which sends him tumbling down. Did you know Leo and even future PTA collaborator Joaquin Phoenix were originally approached to play Dirk? Leo declined since he was doing Titanic but recommended Mark for the role, and Joaquin didn’t feel comfortable with the role of playing a porn actor. Seriously, while Leo and Joaquin are great actors, I don’t think they would have been quite the right fit like Marky Mark was in terms of being that character!

This movie had one of those endings where i quietly say to myself "What the fuck..." boogie nights is one of those movies you can only make once in a certain place and time.
I remember the ending where he whips it out, I was totally taken aback since I thought they wouldn’t show it to keep up the mythos. I found it hilarious when PTA was talking about showing it he compared it to the shark in Jaws in how they didn’t really show a lot of it at all and only revealed it at the end!!! Definitely the right way to go about it!! 🤣

How could you not understand it was dark. I was the same age as you when I saw it and knew it was dark and it was going to be dark to be true to porn.

Burt hated this movie. It put the nail in the coffin of him ever getting back with Momma Gump or getting any tangible roles ever again.

I watched it during Lockdown in 2020 on Netflix, my friend had strongly recommended it years back, and all I knew was that it was “the film about porn”, but it far exceeded my expectations as one of the best films I’ve seen! I must have watched it damn near 100 or so times!
Oh my god, THAT scene, Jesus I was literally anxious the whole time and knew things were going to go really bad, I was freaking shouting for them to get the f**k outta there, and shouting when Todd was going all stupid with the botched deal and the attempted robbery! Not to mention when Rahad Jackson was playing Russian Roulette and they were shouting at him to stop!
That drug deal scene is one of the greatest scenes in any movie

John C Reilly is magic.
It’s funny most of my generation only really know him from Step Brothers when the dude was in some great dramas a decade beforehand (including being in three Best Picture nominees in a year, the only actor to do so, along with a Supporting Actor nomination).
One of the best movie and soundtrack too.

I saw Star Wars about 4 times in the theater in its original run as well. Would have been even more except I was young so my parents had to take me and they were getting sick of it.

Great memories, my Dad saw Star Wars at the drive-in in Adelaide, Australia in the summer of ‘77 when he was nine!

Every character is someone who feels like they need to accomplish something in life and has fallen into a profession that could destroy them. they are all charming and vulnerable in their own ways and Anderson makes you root for them
Same Wahlberg as in The Departed. A really good actor
This is easily his best performance, literally nails Eddie/Dirk’s naivety and innocence which morphs into narcissism and addiction which sends him tumbling down.
Did you know Leo and even future PTA collaborator Joaquin Phoenix were originally approached to play Dirk? Leo declined since he was doing Titanic but recommended Mark for the role, and Joaquin didn’t feel comfortable with the role of playing a porn actor.
Seriously, while Leo and Joaquin are great actors, I don’t think they would have been quite the right fit like Marky Mark was in terms of being that character!
He’s the same in every movie , very limited range. Limited actor.

I really like this scene with Reed and Dirk shooting the bull about Star Wars and getting into the pissing contest on weight lifting. I really like the other scene where Reed recites the Sugar Tree poem for Dirk.

This movie had one of those endings where i quietly say to myself "What the fuck..." boogie nights is one of those movies you can only make once in a certain place and time.
I remember the ending where he whips it out, I was totally taken aback since I thought they wouldn’t show it to keep up the mythos.
I found it hilarious when PTA was talking about showing it he compared it to the shark in Jaws in how they didn’t really show a lot of it at all and only revealed it at the end!!! Definitely the right way to go about it!! 🤣

I had a shirt like the one Eddie is wearing got it used from the goodwill. I remember being so glad I found it. Now it would make you look like a super hero wanabee.
It looks so 70’s haha, it’s funny looking at old photos of my Dad from the time and he had similar shirts and haircuts!

I’m a sucker for 70’s nostalgia that my parents experienced full-on as kids growing up then (they were 9 or so in 1977 when the movie starts in the midst of disco and Star Wars, would have been an amazing time to live in!!)
