That was awesome. This is why I picked up photography when I couldn't play golf anymore. Just as addictive and one great day or great shot keeps you coming back for more. Here's hoping you have many more days like that Steve.
Your forest friend is back! The magic is there in your face and your shots. I can tell how much you love the owl. Superb photographs. As you say, the best yet. 👍
I always enjoy your fine photography and I am always amazed at the lighting you manage to get on all of your subjects, especially the owls. You are one of my favorite people to watch and your photography skills matched with your personality make for some exciting videos. Keep up the outstanding job!!!
Wow, so many fantastic shots! What a beautiful & cooperative owl. I'm thankful (for both of us) that you didn't "call it day" prematurely. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Great photos from this trip Steve, makes up for some of the trips that you come up empty on, i think it is the photography gods throwing in a good trip to keep you coming back for more
Steve, your video definitely made my day too. Thks for sharing. Sometimes, a photographer is in just the right place at the right time. What a great experience watching and listening to your enthusiasm, as you interact with your owl friend. Great video, man, reinforcing that after bailing on the sunrise light or lack thereof, in this case, your persistence rewarded you and us with this great experience.
Love the excitement of the owl sighting. It's true you see them when you least expect it often times. I was driving home from a shoot and it was darn near dark I spotted a Great Horned Owl in a tree. Good thing I was the only one on the road. I got turned around and off the road to capture some mediocre shots but the fact I spotted it so close to home was cool. Keep up the great videos.
PI Steve , beautiful photos the one i love the most is the one that you don’t see the head of the owl it looks almost like one big wing or some kind of beautiful kite. Fantastic thank you Steve
Another great video Steve. Gotta love it when luck helps you out like that. I'm hoping for luck next week as I head out for a 3 day trip to a provincial park looking for critters and moose.
New to your channel ... I could relate to your feelings when you were heading back to your car with no sightings of an owl... but you reminded me of myself in a way...its almost like intuitively you knew something was going to appear. At that point you were so close to your car but still looking knowing something would appear. Total game changer for the day. Love your channel and photography
SM, that was outstanding-thanks. Re your dodgy mic, no dramas there, I’d be more concerned if I couldn’t see what you see & share what you see. You bring your World to the rest of the World & for that I’m very grateful. You are one of life’s natural presenters & professionals. I could sense your excitement & joy. Keep on keeping on :)
Congrats, great fun. I love my 300mm f/4L IS but am almost always in tight thick forest and can't drive anymore. I need to bus around and find some thinned out areas without humans all over the place. I went with the cleaner 80D over the faster AF 7D II. Going to try and swing a 70-200 2.8 in next couple months. I like the idea of your 100-400 Sigma but with APSC light gathering I think I need 2.8 to improve over my 55-250 5.6 STM. If I swing the 70-200 I'll endeavor to shift medicine regimen so I can get out early.
I know im asking randomly but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@August Chad Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
This was so much fun! Thank you for recording! It must be the best feeling ever to break such a long dry spell like that. Sometimes that happens with nature photography though haha. Keep up the great work with the videos! Cheers from Boston!
No thank you! I am going out to photograph eagles(Golden and Sea eagles) Sunday morning, and your tip in an earlier video regarding WB helped me getting away from 50 shades of blue issue.
Steve - enjoy your owl efforts so much. This bird intrigues me. I live in Northern MN. Your videos motivate me to get out and look for owls. I currently use a D7200 with a 70-300mm VR (FX) version. I like the attributes of that 300mm F4 PF. Usually a budget oriented guy...but what the hell - at 64...time to go for it. Looking forward to some Owl opportunities. I follow you, Steve Perry and Mark Smith- learn so much from you guys. Appreciate the time/effort you/they put into making these. Thank you 👍
This is so cool! There's something special about being out in the middle of nowhere with the creatures and a camera. How do you find locations to shoot? You mentioned the spot where the bighorn sheep are. Do you just know from driving around previous days or do you have other ways of finding wildlife spots?
Hey Steve, really love this episode!! Do you have a website or site to share your D850 settings for birds flying towards you? Not sure if my D800 in AF-C is fast enough for that. Thanks 🙏🏼
That was amazing! iv never seen anything like it, does that normally happen for you to be so close to an owl? In norway big birds like that just fly away. Thanks for sharing :)
I really don’t use teleconverters when photographing flying owls. I need the fastest possible shutter speed and AF so I’d rather just shoot the lens as-is.
holy crap those are wonderful images Steve. i hope to photograph a ggo in thew Tetons before i die. we'll be there a month in the fall with that being our ultimate goal. you're right my friend. being out in the natural world is never a waste of time. yesterday we saw our first snowy. a very rare sight here in west texas. check it out at 500px.com/whisp. all the best.
Thanks! Congrats on seeing the snowy, that bird is a looooong ways from home... I keep hoping one will show up here in Wyoming but so far haven’t heard of anything.
Lovely images of what looks to me to be a Barred Owl. Commentary is good. But sometimes the silence is even better. No insult intended, just wish other you tubers would learn that that silence can be golden and allowsfolks to just enjoy the scene.
Thumbs way up for this one, what a day you had. Excellent shots!!
Thanks!
Damn you are so lucky! In Slovenia we have so shy animals, they hear you and they are gone!
That was awesome. This is why I picked up photography when I couldn't play golf anymore. Just as addictive and one great day or great shot keeps you coming back for more. Here's hoping you have many more days like that Steve.
Haha, yes as a golfer I know exactly what you mean. Thanks!
Thanks again, Steve...........you not only entertain us, but you inspire us as well.
Appreciate it!

Thanks! I agree...
Like a kid in a candy store !!! Love the enthusiasm. Very nice images.
What can I say, I get excited!
Great photos from this trip Steve, makes up for some of the trips that you come up empty on, i think it is the photography gods throwing in a good trip to keep you coming back for more
It’s true. Just when it gets frustrating, nature throws an epic day into the mix.
Stunning pictures, as usual, Steve, certainly did make my day!
Thanks!

Thanks so much for the kind words! And thanks for watching...
that owl put on a great display for you, thanks for sharing, it made up for me missing out on that genius level shit...something that i sadly lack.
Yep, we could all use some extra genius level shit...
Congrats, great fun. I love my 300mm f/4L IS but am almost always in tight thick forest and can't drive anymore. How 14 people dislike this. I just found your channel yesterday! Love it.
I know im asking randomly but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account??

@Titus Terrence Instablaster =)
@August Chad Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out now.

Thanks so much you saved my ass!

Thanks! Yep, the dry spells happen all the time. It’s fun breaking them...
Well getting out actually highly increases the chance of taking a photo or two 😄. Nice video as always👍
Thank you sir.
No thank you! I am going out to photograph eagles(Golden and Sea eagles) Sunday morning, and your tip in an earlier video regarding WB helped me getting away from 50 shades of blue issue.
It is interesting how a good image emulates life. It is the bland and blurry “negative space” in between that makes the subject pop.
👍
Just fantastic! 👍👍👍
Man i really enjoy your vlogs keep it up! such a nive photographer and vloger aswell..
Thanks! Glad you enjoy the vlog.
Great Video, your face was a picture when you found the owl. As always a entertainment with a purpose.
Yep, I get excited...
This was the day your winning photograph was taken. Congratulations!
True. Thanks!

That's excellent! Yes, get out there and make some photos. The 300PF is great, you'll love it.
Great video👍🏼👍🏼 where was this shot?
Grand Teton National Park (area), Wyoming
Amazing video, Steve!
Thanks!
Not a bad ay indeed.. Thanks for this inspiring video!
Beautiful pictures, superb!
Thank you!

You mentioned the spot where the bighorn sheep are. Do you just know from driving around previous days or do you have other ways of finding wildlife spots?
I just spend a lot of time out in the field searching.
Gorgeous images!
Thanks!

Yep, it ain’t over til it’s over...
Great video. Can't wait to get up there this year for the first time. What are you shooting the video with, in the car and of the owl?
Check the equipment list in the description of each video. Thanks for watching!
Hey Steve, really love this episode!! Do you have a website or site to share your D850 settings for birds flying towards you? Not sure if my D800 in AF-C is fast enough for that.
Thanks 🙏🏼
Good point, I need to make a quick video about that. Although you can see my general settings for the D850 in a previous video.
love Owls
👍
Owls are such amazing birds. Dig your channel. Question: how many times a week do you nab a pizza from Dornan's? :-D One of the best I've ever had.
👍
Awesome!
Thanks!
Another great video Steve, which camera do you use for vlogging?
Thanks, I use a Lumix G85 or a Canon G7x ii. My equipment is listed in the description of the video, check that out.
D500 and 300pf??
D850 and 300pf👍
That was amazing! iv never seen anything like it, does that normally happen for you to be so close to an owl?
In norway big birds like that just fly away.
Thanks for sharing :)
Well I’d say it’s not normal but sometimes you find a cooperative bird.
Steve Mattheis Pretty cool :)
Superb!
Thanks!
Steve ur vids are awesome but can you try to find some other owl species I don't know cause I live in India
I agree... great grays are great and all but some other species that are harder to find would be great.
I’m always on the lookout for other species but Great grays are my favorite so I focus on them.
Please come to India , will love to travel with you for tigers and other big cats
Yep, that would be excellent!
Life of a hunter I guess 2:48 was not expecting to hear that
Worth carrying a teleconverter for these occasions? Not that it stopped you getting shots!
I really don’t use teleconverters when photographing flying owls. I need the fastest possible shutter speed and AF so I’d rather just shoot the lens as-is.
Great video, thanks especially for all the genius shit 😂😂
Ha! 👍
It looks like he wanted you to stay!
Definitely👍
holy crap those are wonderful images Steve. i hope to photograph a ggo in thew Tetons before i die. we'll be there a month in the fall with that being our ultimate goal. you're right my friend. being out in the natural world is never a waste of time. yesterday we saw our first snowy. a very rare sight here in west texas. check it out at 500px.com/whisp. all the best.
Thanks! Congrats on seeing the snowy, that bird is a looooong ways from home... I keep hoping one will show up here in Wyoming but so far haven’t heard of anything.
Faboulos!!!!
👍
Lovely images of what looks to me to be a Barred Owl. Commentary is good. But sometimes the silence is even better. No insult intended, just wish other you tubers would learn that that silence can be golden and allowsfolks to just enjoy the scene.
Wow grey and barred look very much alike! Had to check! Guess I’m more used to seeing barred that what I expected to see.
Yes, they are similar but great grays are larger and have yellow eyes. They are in the same genus ‘strix’.
It is a very cool owl, and I am jealous of both the sighting and the photos.
