- All of the hints about Nott's backstory that I could find.
There didn't seem to be any obvious ones in episodes 17-18.
Our little goblin girl has led a very interesting life, and at least a couple of these backstory hints haven't been addressed yet as of episode 19.

My thought exactly! Very clever to wrap it in a veil of not having learnt his character yet.

Not gonna lie when Nott said "I'm the parent, he's my boy," I cried a bit...
That is still my favorite monologue type segment of the series. Nott basically told them they didn't know anything, and to just shut up and listen for once. Caleb is a lost boy, and Nott is there to guide him to becoming great.
That was so emotional. Also, Liam's expression during that scene is great.
Accept now she has gone on to say "you are the second love of my life." So not mother and son anymore...that comment, looking back doesn't properly express their relationship.
@@azurastar3223 uh, you can have a second love without being "in love" with that second person. It still is a parent/child relationship. When a mother gives birth, it is at that moment she has another love of her life. At least that's what my girlfriend says
@@aaronblack7329 Agreed, love is not always romantic. It can be platonic, amongst other things, including motherly. I think Nott was projecting in that scene and throughout, her actual son onto Caleb. But taking everything away, what's actually real is their friendship, which is what I think their love is like. Platonic and Romantic love have differences but there is a large overlap which is why it can be confusing.
Episode 9
She refuses to go in the water

Nott sounds like one constant voice crack
Episode 6 at around the 28 minute mark:
context: the party is talking to a halfling whose house burned down in a gnoll attack, Nott specifically is talking to him at this point, he starts to notice she's a goblin.
Nott: in halfling "I've also been a victim of a horrible attack"
Matt makes him roll persuasion not deception
There was also an episode in which he turns into a halfling girl and says her name is Veth
Matt tried so hard to not give nothing away he froze for a moment only being saved by Travis who threw a joke right then

She also uses the names "Bren" and "Otto". Liam freaked out a bit when she called herself Bren.

Watching this now, after the backstory reveal, is a very different experience. Sam you little shit, "he can change me", "I need his magic to save me", you had this all planned out from the very start
Nott wants Caleb to become powerful and cast a polymorph spell on her to make her a halfling girl permanently. That's my guess.
And he wants to Wish his parents back to life, or to destroy Trent, both, but yeah.
I feel like if he gets to 9th level spells Caleb will go for time stop instead, just because of the whole bend time thing.
Makes sense because Scanlan had true polymorph and Sam made a pretty big deal out of it when he mentioned using it on Trinket. So it makes sense that Sam would still be thinking about the spell.
He was asking for library info on people who've pushed the boundaries, researched whole new magic applications. He's probably looking to find out who made the most progress on safely rewriting the past.

I just had a thought watching the video and reading your comment. I'm wondering if Nott's clan either killed a halfling family or destroyed a town of halflings and she found a small child she decided to take care of out of guilt. She mentions how much she hates her own kind. I' assuming their is some inciting incident that relates to her maternal instincts. Maybe she saw the damage her clan could do and decided to try and do the right thing. However this is all assumptions and hearsay so I wouldn't be surprised if I was totally wrong.
Nice idea,Zachary Snowden.The baby theory is definitely supported by the baby bottles,the ball bearings which might actually be toys,and perhaos the other stuff are to be sold by the baby's current caretaker.That is the mostly likely reason for her wanting to be a hafling,so she can be the baby's new mother.Aww,how sweet
this is my favorite thing about sam. outwardly, a narrow minded person would only see comic relief in him and his characters, but each one has something about them that is so tragic and hits so hard. nott breaks my heart :/

@@owendaulton9316 you probably know it by now, but the atributes on character sheets : Streght, dexterety, wisdom, inteligence, charisma, and constitution, are leveled up from 1 to 20, depending on the number the bonus of that hability will change. With an 10, you're neutral, you have +0 on the habilities that require so atribute.

Nott asks "WHAT!?!?" and inquires further about it, losing interest only when she realizes Fjord was always a half-orc. (SEASON 2 - EPISODE 11 - TIME 3:04:52)
When Matt reveals that there was no use for dynamite in the small farming village of Feldwin.
Sam seems to signal to Matt that he said too much by briefly touching the back of his neck, after which Matt immediately (but quickly and non-chalantly) corrects that statement to be the OUTSKIRTS of that village. (SEASON 2 - EPISODE 24 - TIME 23:35)

I think it's because her clan doesn't actually come from Felderwin, but from the area around it. Saying that she comes from Felderwin itself hints towards her actual life. It's a super minor thing and I kinda feel like it's a bit of a stretch. Could be a DM slip, but that's a really good catch.
the whole scene where nott is charmed by molly lives rent free in damn my head. “and i need him to be” and “no… no, you can’t” are so chilling.
Knott had a Child with that Halfling man and is a mother THAT'S why she's sending things to that address, to support her child. And because she can't be with her (presumably Halfing) child she has imprinted on Caleb who needs a maternal figure.

AmishRiot it makes a lot of sense. She even asked if he got the package.
Small children like buttons and shiny things. Don’t forget, that there is no Toys‘R‘us in that Lore. Children tend to play with everything and the buttons are the best, Nott could get. Also they are pretty precious, at least her husband could sell them.
Another point is, that Nott is becoming more and more goblin which terrifies her. She’s afraid to forget her past more and more. So yeah, considering all those things, it makes perfect sense.
@AmishRiot well he mentioned that nott was a collector of bits and bobs before she turned into a goblin so it might have just been a throwback to when she was a halfling with the collections.
Fjord has the potential to help Nott in the exact same way as Caleb, being that both of their classes' spell lists include True Polymorph.
could not learn it herself, because of the arcan trickster subclass or do the spell levels not go that far?
Ghobi Echo for arcane tricksters, they only go as far as 1or 2 level 5 spells. Maybe.

Even warlocks cap at 5th level, getting mystic arcanum, and I don't think he'd take True Poly for his 9th level arcanum.

Maybe nott WAS a halfling girl and was cursed to be a goblin, found sanctuary with a goblin tribe but things didn’t go well there, hence why she doesn’t care about them, and fled and got sent to jail where she met Caleb who could possibly break the curse on her.

@@Vandalgrunt Except for the part about going to a tribe but it didn't go well. The last time she was anywhere near a goblin tribe was the moment she was cursed. It didn't go well before she even became a goblin.

I think this is a solid theory. She sent a baby bottle, two bracelets, the brass doorknob and money. (I know she sent other things) The money could be for a supposed parental figure who is taking care of the baby and the rest is for said baby.

It's been really cool see Sam play Nott as I started playing my own Goblin character around the time season 2 started. I've been playing as someone who wants to lift all the goblinoid races up from evil (as a Redemption Paladín, go figure) and is trying to find and restore the old Goblin ways before Magubliyet took over. I've enjoyed seeing Sam play a Goblin PC who seems to hate themselves for being a Goblin (as well as the regret for what happened in Felderwind(sp?)).

Looking back, no doubt that Sam is a master at his craft. Amazing story with so many hints. Great job Sam, Nott/Veth was a badass character to watch.
Sam's acting was incredible and all of the pieces of what made Nott who she was started falling into place.

but I don't think Nott is talking about her gender when she is referring to her body. she is referring to the goblin part. it kinda seems like people are reading it as she not comfortable with her woman-Ness (such eloquent, many wow), but I think she's just talking about being an actual goblin
I don't think they believe Nott wants to be a boy. They are just saying it seems similar to how some trans people feel about their bodies.
This is because Nott is experiencing body dysmorphia.

Trans people suffer from body dysmorphia. The idea of alienation from the body they are in, like it doesn't look how they feel it should look. Nott is experiencing the same thing and so has become loved by people with this condition. They feel represented.
@@lucypeace6132 Matt Mercer has talked about having those feelings too. It's a deep subject that most people don't even want to address. They'd rather just bury the feelings and keep it to themselves, so for Sam (and Nott) to speak semi-openly about it is great. I hope Nott finds somewhere to be happy with who he is. And maybe Nott coming to grips with those feelings will help Caleb through his issues as well.

It's kind of obvious past a first glance, though. The point of the porcelain half-mask and the hood (and the bandages) is to just conceal her when she's out and about and people aren't looking directly at her.

The bit I liked the most from his hints was Nott using a different piece of her real name whenever she was giving a "fake" name. I'm pretty sure Sam used "Veth", "Bran", and "Natto" each separately.
general question, does the DM know everything about the characters? like did he know Nott's true identity at the beginning?
Anyone wonder if not is reincarnated soul who came back as a gnome, who somehow lost the memories of her former life?
