Only 3 active abilities is a huge red flag for me
I wish we got to see something a bit later into the story so we had more abilities and stuff unlocked, to see how it plays
I feel like everyone here is remembering DA:I with rose colored lenses. It had a TON of scuff and chunk that this preview doesn't seem to. We're only getting a snippet of the stort as well, and only 3 recurring characters out of likely quite a few.
The combat looks fine, just a more refined and involved version of what we had in Inquisition. Dodge mechanics and combat actions with aiming is new to that, but otherwise it's good.
Style-wise, why are y'all obsessing over grit? NONE of the other dragon ages were gritty, they were just high-fantasy. Why would any of the stylization change to dark and gritty now?
All in all, I feel like it's a good step forward for Bioware in gameplay, and a return to form in narrative. I'm looking forward to the game. Y'all with "DOA" mindsets can stew in your pessimistic misery.
I would argue DAO is very much Dark Fantasy and not High Fantasy, but the evolution of the series since DA2 onwards has been High Fantasy, which as much as I prefer Dark Fantasy and that grittiness, I think it was inevitable to appeal to a wider audience, so I get it.
But I think going after people who enjoy DAO is just as bad as the people ripping this game to shreds for not being a carbon copy of DAO. It's all just preference, and with newer games and franchises coming out, and the evolution of gaming, people are going to come and go from franchises
@@NewDengsagreed DAO is definitely dark fantasy with the blight etc but 2 and inquisition are much more high fantasy which veilguard will probably be as well. I love origins but also thought the gameplay reveal was really good.
@@ashleywalker8111 Exactly this, this isn't a sudden change, it's just such a big one
It's obvious they're trying to go after the newer generation. The fortnite crowd. God, it looks so cookie cutter. It's like they don't want to rock the boat too hard in any direction, and it all just feels... tranquil. The Templars clearly got a hold of this series and sucked the soul out of it.
It's a far cry from Origins, but I think it has potential, it's definitely a pure ARPG not a CRPG
Honestly, I see this style as really similiar to the one they used in Inquisition (combat and graphics, the way that our character moves seems really similar, at least to me)
I kinda agree, I think the combat is more of an evolution of Inquisitions. It's not my favourite, but I don't think it's going to be a game breaker for me.
The graphics again is personal choice, I prefer more gritty or 'older' graphics than more animated, but with how games and the industry are evolving, I can't stay I'm surprised they changed things up.
Still going to buy and stream this day 1 and do like 50 playthroughs as I'm a sucker for Dragon Age regardless haha
Open your eyes. It's closer to Fortnite.
This looks a lot less like fortnite than the companion trailer did
it looks like garbage, terrible voice acting, bad lip sync, horrendous art style, varric with black hair and no chest hair, all voices sound more or less the same bland and without any emotion passion or soul in it, the demons look childisch as hell as if the game is made for 6+, the combat is nothing but an epileptic lightshow, and i doubt the writing will be any better on the story. how is this the same as Inquisition?
@@NewDengsI liked the graphics in Inquisition. I think that it looks amazing till this day. I just wish that the graphics would look more like Inquisition so visible pores etc. Maybe they are still gonna work on it a little bit. If not there are always modders.
Each dragon age game has had a different combat style so I'm not really bothered by this game having a different one to Inquisition's. As for not being able to control companions, I'll admit I'm not as concerned about it as others might be due to the fact I mainly play as my character during combat and you can still command companions to use their abilities like in the previous games. What I'm bummed out about is not having three companions to role with. As for the arkham style combat, I think it might be because we're seeing a rogue character, I think a mage and a warrior will play differently especially in the warrior's case, probably a lot less dodging. I'm not too surprised by their being a parry mechanic since Inquisition had a blocking and parrying mechanic for the warriors.
The 2 things I'm most hung up on is only having 2 companions and not being able to control them, as I just loved bouncing between them just to change up the gameplay while still keeping my MC as the class I want them to be in canon. While I don't like the combat, I think it's something that will grow on me the more I actually play it, as opposed to seeing it.
I was actually talking to someone and I said I'm not sure how that Arkham style style is going to work with a Warrior or Mage, and I can't imagine the core gameplay will be vastly different between the classes, hopefully this is something we'll get to see at some point before release
"Each dragon age game has had a different combat style" Yeah thats not a great thing. But keep paying for medicore shit please!
Even if I think of this as not a dragon age game at all, to me, it looks generic. The enemy designs are bland and boring, those glowing branches just look out of place even within the styles as if they were just placed there to indicate ‘yes this is an enemy shoot it’. The overall style doesn’t even feel like a ‘style’ to me, it looks like an amalgamation of stuff that’s considered popular, graphic novels, Fortnite a bit of anime, like that pride demon looks like something straight out of a generic isekai to me. I don’t know, I’m rambling, everything in this 20 minute video just looks slightly comical to me, considering the weight of the situation they are in nothing feels impactful, urgent or like anyone’s taking it too seriously…
I don’t mind the combat, it looks better than inquisition and I wasn’t expecting this game to be tactical in any way at all, I prefer full turn based or full action, and this at least appears to have found a better balance than inquisition. Again though, the combat just looks serviceable, it doesn’t look like the kind of combat that’s so deep you’ll spend multiple playthroughs learning every class because it’s so fun, it just looks fine… I hope I’m wrong tbh, if the combat is actually fun and engaging and the classes feel different enough it could save the whole game for me…
I think what would have helped more is if we saw some later game stuff that helped dial in that sense of dread or urgency about the world being in danger. Seeing really early game stuff is cool, but it does still leave a lot of questions it seems for people
@@NewDengs yeah definitely this is just the set up, you could be right, I hope you are XD I’m still gunna play the game and I’m still hoping that it will be good enough to make all these things not matter
Honestly, Bioware could release Anthem 2, call it Dragon Age 5 and I'd still buy it because I'm such a DA fan haha
So here’s my verdict, getting a look at the gameplay, the combat feels like it’s going the inquisition route only it feels more refined and sort of evolved.
Sure theirs lots of bright colours for a mature game…but inquisition had ALOT of bright and garish colors yet no one cared back then.
The tone also feels very akin to inquisition also which I’m also pleased about. In all honesty I would prefer the dark grittier tone but I knew from the moment the title font was released months ago as a bright purple I knew it wasn’t going back to that.
And yeah I’m kinda bummed about the no control over your party members also, it feels like they’re going the mass effect 2 route with this entry. But nonetheless it’s not going to dampen my overall experience.
All in all I’m very pleased with what we got. I would class this game as “inquisition part 2” in all honesty. I do genuinely feel a little bit sorry for BioWare as I do genuinely think that the backlash was not their intention at all…that being said…whoever approved that trailer a few days ago…oh boyyy, the boss wants to see you in his office 😬😬
I feel like we are on almost the same wavelength, as soon as they pushed the focus to companions my first thought was Mass Effect 2 (granted when I think of 'old school Bioware, I think DAO & ME2).
I feel like the combat and style was going to be a evolution over time as audience have become more accustomed to faster paced and colour stuff. As much as I would love a darker fantasy more tactical style, I think this change was inevitable, especially with the inclusion of EA, which we've seen as the games have progressed.
I'd have preferred completely dark tone, much like a DAO or Witcher, but this looks 1000x better than the companion trailer they first released. I'm not sure why they chose to release that first, I think seeing this first would have stopped a lot of the initial outrage
It's made by EA and I haven't bought a game from EA for over a decade, not going to start now. Having said that it looks serviceable, but showing off only low-level combat is not going to evoke a strong response one way or the other.
I agree, later game combat would have been really beneficial
As I texted you earlier, its a pass for me. I just cannot get behind the art style in a Dragon Age title, nor the over the top combat. Origins did not have over the top animations, and it was gritty and bloody. Here, its too polished and shimmery. If this was Fable, or even something like a new Summoner game, I was completely understand. But, not Dragon Age.
I think the style and combat will be a stickler for a lot of people when it comes to this game
@@NewDengs Remember tactical view? Remember planning out each characters AI when you weren't in control? Remember thinking about progression in characters - gear and stats? Yea...me too..IN ORIGINS!
My biggest gripe above everything is I really wish we could control the companions and it wasn’t using the Mass Effect style
@@NewDengs Mass Effect worked in Mass Effect, not in DA.
I get this
I don't like it at all, I can't lie. The art style gives me Fortnite, especially things like what the main guy was wearing in the gameplay, the dialogue feels like a Marvel movie in both gameplay and trailer, laughing and joking about stuff that should be very serious. The tone is too light, it does not match at all with DA. And the combat looks even more shallow, it looks like another basic "mash attack button, dodge, maybe hit a special move once in a while" for every battle kind of game. Why is every RPG series becoming Genshin? Turning into basic action games? There are already so many games with this same action combat and it's tired, when the series became popular in the first place for RPG tactics with some action and a dark fantasy tone. This is the exact opposite of that. It's repeating the failures of DA2 and Inquisition for me and making them even less interesting. Where is the RPG at this point? It's a colorful hack and slash.
I wish we saw some later gameplay, with more abilities to see the combat more in depth
RPGs aren't defined by their combat system.
@@mindeyethemasterscreen2712 It's a huge part of it. DA:O was largely popular for the RPG tactics in combat specifically but this, there are 3 skills, you don't control your party and it's just hack and slash. If it plays like a basic action game, that's a massive part of the RPG gone. Not to mention that the tone of the story is also vastly different on top of it. This only reads as DA to people that started with Inquisition.
Combat looks shallow and not very punchy like dragons dogma. Yeah, that game is pretty clunky but at least when you hit something it felt like a hit. Inquisition had this problem too with the lackluster attack animations
Dragons Dogma 2 is the exact vibe I got too, I think I mentioned it in the video
@@NewDengs i think the combat could use more weight or if they're going more flashy like dmc5, then the attacks need to look waay better. Its still early so maybe it'll improve? I have low hopes though. That reveal trailer did more harm then good
I want to see how the warrior and mage play in this style
Still not sold one way or the other right now. Although the voice over narrator or very annoying, I hope they remove it. Does not seem to know what is happening and just complains. And the voice is just grating. 😂
It's a good thing your my best friend haha
@@NewDengs someone has to be 😜
I need to see how the mages play!
Me too!
The backgrounds is only for dialogue reactivity and passive damage buffs against other factions, it's nothing like the origins of DA:O sadly.
Yeah sadly I read about this, would have been nice to have a faction based origin to jump into the story, I'm intrigued as to why a new main character (who I assume is a nobody at the start) would care about trying to stop Solas all of a sudden
@@NewDengs As I wild guess based on the other trailer I would guess the Venatori are looking for you for some reason, Harding and Varric happen to be there and join the fight/brawl since you have a common enemy (or they also get recognized by the venatori) and you go from there.
I hope is something better than that but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
@@Kross415 I just hope it's a better reason than 'I'm courageous and want to help save the world' etc
I think the backgrounds will also affect that for me from an immersive level, for example I could definitely see a Grey Warden wanting to help, whereas a Crow, I'm not so sure of
@@NewDengs That's what I mean't by the venatori looking for you, if they are looking for you the reason has to be conected with the whole story and since the backgrounds are not ''origins'' the reason is probably the same for everyone and the background only adds some flavor,
But yeah I hope they come up with cool stuff that also makes sense and it doesn't feel cheap.
Me too, I hope we get a little more info
It’s too arcade-like for me, reminds me of what’s out from mobile games. It’s not for me. The demons look like they were produced by a Vegas promoter from the 2000s. This game lacks gravity to me in tone. A pride demon is a perversion and is a horror to behold, not an entity that would fit right in at a Pixar cartoon.
You're not the first person to use the term 'Arcade-like' that I've spoken to
Dead on arrival. It's a pass for true DA fans.
Not a fan of what you saw then?
I’m a fan, and I’m playing
Quit with that whole true fan garbage. Either you like it or you don't and move on with your life
@@andrewg9107 I’m going to throw this out there, I’ve seen pretty ripping people who like this apart for not being ‘true fans’ and I’ve seen ‘super’ fans telling people that there not a fan of Dragon Age, only DAO
Sadly there’s seems to be this divide whereas in reality we’re all DA fans, some people just don’t like the evolution of Dragon Age
Sadly I think the Gatekeeping is happening from both sides
The game reminds me alot about the combat from The Mass Effect(1-3) Series I personally think is a great choice then they already begun to change the gameplay with the strategic from DA:Origens.
It's 100% Mass Effect inspired
What?! How do we know Harding!? 4:05. She's the cool as hell scout who fed us info throughout some of the nastiest places in Inquisition. Not mad atcha, though, you'd have recognized her if they didn't corrupt the game visuals and stuck with the sleek, original style.
This sounds like you got the impression I don’t recognise Scout Harding?
So what ever happened to Dreadwolf
Renamed
Yep exactly this
Looks like the best DA game yet!! Day one buy!
Get that pre order in!
gonna preorder this!!
Hell yeah!
Its EA. Dont preorder. Never buy into hype.
@@selej the EA part always terrifies me, no matter the franchise 😂
