Its the fact that youre so concentrated on making it through the gap that you dull your other senses to the point that anything can catch you off guard. To this day, when I'm focused on doing my work, when my boss or coworker or anyone comes up to me without me knowing their presence, I still jump from my body and enter the afterlife.
I used to prank people so much with this game and 2 weeks ago I was at a friend's house and I convinced him to play this game, at first he thought I would prank him but then I told him that it's so hard I can't beat it so he continues to play it and right in the middle of level 3 he got jumpscared so bad that it scared his siblings as well 😂
When this game first went viral, it was a brilliant example of how to do a jump scare. It wasn't widely known at the time, unlike today's games that completely botch the concept. Here's everything this game did right: 1. There was no indication that it would happen. (it's not classified as a "horror game" anywhere apparent) 2. It was done after establishing the lie that it's a real game. 3. It was done in a part where you have to move your mouse at pixel detail, forcing your undivided attention. Nothing has come even close since.

That's actually quite an effective scare; the game makes you mentally tense up trying to walk the narrow path, then jumpscares you while you're in your tense state!
That's pretty much me but inside I was very scared..... Though I got over it and even played the game on night with no other sounds... That was even worse...
The year was 2004, I scared one of my friends with a similar concept created by the same guy who did the Maze game. *Scream will help you*
My older cousin made me play this at my Nan's house when I was around 6 years old. I vividly remember playing a Bugs Bunny game on my PS1 and him calling me to come see the game he was playing. Absolutely terrified me. To this day, I still associate the maze game with Bugs Bunny. Crazy how stuff like that sticks with you.
This felt like yesterday when I was in high school watching this in my classroom with my friends. Where does time go? :(
