Thank you for sharing your ideas with the rest of us. Just over 3 yrs back, Doctor said cancer, was told "maybe 90 days". I entered into chemo and radiation treatments, absolutly the worst time in my 60 years of life. Long story short, I beat stage 3 lung cancer, yep, cancer is gone! I'm still recovering from the chemo and rad as it beat me up pertty bad. Can't go back to my job yet so I turned to my little 12X16 ft woodshop, great therapy. Since starting, I've done a couple craft shows and feel I did very well. I buy as little wood as possible but sometimes you do have to, LOL. Most all my projects are made from recycled, used, repurposed, it's amazing what you can do. I've been at this about 2yrs now and have yet to use any pallet wood but have been wanting to for some time now. Thank you again.im still breathing, so I'm still sawing, LOL.......

Ah, Leah, you had me at FREE! I've done similar things, but with wood that I bought at a sawmill as rough-cut. It's amazing what a thickness planer can do. Love seeing something ugly and ratty looking turn into some beautifully grained wood. I can smell the sawdust now.

Good stuff Leah, my dad always brought home pallets and packing crates so we had wood to play with and nothing got wasted, once it was too small for jobs we used it in the bbq.
350munro I pick up discarded pallets too and make my saw horses out of them. I get free saw horses that I use for a lot of projects around the house.

Daniel Fairless you can pick up a jack plane pretty reasonable at a yard sale or flea market. Mine is about 30 years old to me. And it was old when I bought it for a couple bucks. Sharpen the blade like Leah did the chisel and make sure the sole (bottom) of the plane is flat. There are some that have grooved bottoms. The high part is what needs to be flat on those. Get a second blade ease the corners and you have a scrub plane. There’s a bit of a learning curve on setting the depth of the blade and reading direction of grain
I think Ms Leah did a video on hand planes. She also has one on handsaws. I learned on a western saw, but I like a Japanese saw as it cuts on the pull stroke and is easier for me to control. I think you can pick one up for about $20-30 that you can put different blades in for soft or hardwood. A corded circular saw should be cheap this time of year with a couple of jigs and different teeth count blades, you can cut almost everything a table saw can. Don’t buy cheaply made blades

Paul Sellers comes to mind for one. Community colleges offer woodworking courses as well. There are many good resources at your local library. Good luck.

The culled lumber pile is where I always go to first, as well. So many of our farm projects have been done with HD culled lumber at 70% off and free wood from Craigslist. Raised beds, chicken coops, nest boxes... small wood projects, and so on. Thanks for sharing this tip.

Excellent advice, Leah. I love shopping for bargains. I usually start with the clearance racks throughout the big box stores. Recently scored new shower doors for $12.44. Went to buy splash guards for my shower and they were $19.98 each! Needless to say I didn't buy the splash guards. LoL. Thanks for the tip on lumber.

Give me your phone number. I'll text her. She should let you buy a thickness planer. But if my pleading doesn't work there is plan B. Work with what you have for now and make something that is sellable at fleamarkets. Earn some extra money that way, and put this extra money in a special place until you have saved up enough for a planer. Plan C. Find a friend who has a planer, Ask to use it but tell him you'll buy a set of blades for it or pay for sharpening, everybody wins.I know it is frustrating, good luck.

In our area there is a cabinet manufacturing plant. They get culls/seconds/rejects that a local flea market sells when they are available. A while back I got some 1/2", 4 x 6 cabinet grade plywood for about $7 or $8 a sheet. I went by today and all they had was 3/4" 4x8 sheets for $15.00 a sheet. So check your area for salvage lumber resellers. Thanks for all of your great ideas Leah.

I️ work Construction and making friends with superintendents and carpenters in new neighborhoods is a good way to score free lumber. The scraps they throw away is amazing. Just ask before you take.

Way before your son was born, I worked at a hardwood company. I was able to cover an addition wall on a rental with mahogany. When mahogany was shipped to the company for grading and drying, it was covered in mahogany. We usually just burned it in barrels to keep warm in the winter at work. I used hand planes since back then I had limited tools, a corded drill and a corded circular saw. Bought my first jack plane at a flea market and fell in the hole with old Tools. The offcuts from dry kilning were also free. A lot of the furniture factories give wood offcuts for free or very low price especially in winter around here. And then there are pallets. Books have been written, videos and instructables have been made on what to build with pallets. The nails aren’t as bad to remove as they were ten years ago. Also, one can try construction sites as they tend to throw out a lot of pine. And even though I own and keep buying a lot of woodworking books, I would suggest Jacob Abbott’s books from the 1800’s free on line! www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/2136 Even the beginners books assume one knows or has access to someone who knows how to use hand tools from that era.

You are right in that there are many great sources for free wood out there...the offcuts, the construction sites, and the pallets that you mentioned. Another good source is when people are throwing out old cabinets and old furniture...it is usually hard wood.
seejanedrill So true Ms Leah! Here there’s discarded furniture all the time and couches and chairs often have poplar frames. And those old cabinets may have very tight grained pine or maple. Trees don’t get time to grow like that anymore
Great tip! I do the same thing in the plant department. I go right for the half dead plants. A couple weeks of TLC and they're good to go. I'll have to try getting to the home store early for miss cuts.

Good video! ALSO, if you want a discount on paint at big-box stores, ask for "OPPPS" paint! Thats paint that was mixed for a customer but was the wrong shade! Great for projects, spare room, garage, shed etc...

I've learned some many home improvement knowledge from you. The video about making perfectly straight cuts with a circular saw is my favorite; I botched a lot of projects until I learned that trick:-)
Many of us CAN'T "do this" because we don't have a workshop, we don't have a table saw, and we don't have a planer.
But we still love you.
There may be some in your future, you never know🙂.
I don't have a planer either. But I have a router and made a jig so I can use it for planing. There is always more than one way to do things. You don't have to have a table saw to cut tongue and groove off of wood. A circular saw will work. Again, make a jig if you have to. There are videos on how to do this and a simple search should give you a lot of options that will hopefully help for your specific situation.
Leah - just watching this for the first time. This is great for you, but how about the rest of us who don't have your Pro-level commercial-grade power tools? How about showing the same process with a hand-held electric planer and a skill saw? These are items more of us would be likely to have on hand...
I also shop for those pieces at the big box hardware stores...AND..I also check out my local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store for items, as well. I feel good when I shop at the Re-Store as not only do I get a bargain, but the money is used to house people.

WOW, what Home Depot did you go to for free lumber? When I was in the states I was a Home Depot junkie, even spent part of my weekends there just looking at new stuff. One thing I noticed was they didn't give away ANYTHING, even the ben of lumber that was 50% off, had 2X4s so badly warped and twisted, good only for fire wood. Free wood at Home Depot on what planet! Hee-Hee!
Great video as usual Leah! Any advice, maybe a FAQ section for r commend3d beginner woodworking tools? Such as which table saw and such? I️ go to the store and look and have no idea. I️ don’t wanna Buy the absolute cheapest as I’m sure I’ll need to upgrade later. Table saw, miter saw? What would be your beginners kit to building a garage wood working area?? Thanks!
You have brought up a great idea for a future video (the beginner's guide to building a garage wood working area). As for table saws, I really like mine. It's a hybrid, and definitely not as expensive as a full-on cabinet style saw, but is more of a "mid-range" table saw. I put a link in the description to the saw on Amazon, so you can check it out. But you can probably find it cheaper than the Amazon price if you hunt around a bit.
A track saw can be used to cut up recycled wood, especially old furniture that has been discarded. Some of this wood is not immediately suitable for a table saw, for example it doesn't have a straight edge to run along the fence, or it is warped. Cutting it up with a track saw can work well and make it table saw ready. I've used a lot of excellent hardwood from cabinet doors that used to be $2 at local recycling places. Also hardwood flooring cast-offs, especially if it is unfinished can be used.
Nearly everything I build has at least some recycled wood. Often that wood is better quality than the new lumber used today. I picked up a very large pine entertainment center ("free" sign on curb) and will have gotten 20 drawers from it when I finish my current project. It used a lot of 5/8" pine. I left the finish on the drawers. I've been spoiled by how good this was.

I was going to add that there are some track saws that aren't so expensive, you can use your circular saw and they sell you the track and a base. Eurekazone is a solid one, you can buy a track, base and couple of clamps. It's pretty DIY and you have to study it for a while to figure it out, but definitely more affordable than the European designed brands.
Also, I wanted to thank you for these videos. When I'm down in the dumps, a couple of your videos cheer me up.

And I agree with other posts, was hoping for more details about where you find this discount wood.
Plus a quality table saw and thickness planer are not cheap. If you can afford those, you can afford to buy some decent wood too.
This is a home improvement channel. I show people how to use tools. Therefore, I need to have tools. But there is nothing wrong with being thrifty and looking for bargains.
I'm fine with the idea of saving money and getting deals. I'm just saying that this video did not meet my expectations. It didn't give much info on how to find these deals. And the equipment required makes this for a certain niche person, unless there are handy other alternatives for those of us who don't own a planar.

I am using a table saw to make the cut. But you could also use a circular saw

Hundreds I'm sure. I am an un -ordinary person , I think. I pinch pennies. I don't spend hundreds on worthless cable tv, large bass boats, country club, the best cell phone, the best car, restaurants, etc. Find a friend who owns a planer and share.

Hi, I don't agree with you. You got the wood for free but you invested 10k in machines to make the wood usable. I don't have thikness planner and not a table saw ( I will buy one but not a planner)

This video is not particularly bad, but I expected a bit more from the title.
A 70% discount is pretty good. Many businesses will let you have pallet wood for free. Yes free. That's even better. Now if you can get someone to pay you to take away wood that would be the ultimate. Good luck.
I agree with every point. I have made 2 trips to my local HD this week and no free or cheap wood. I live in a housing development of 100 homes and I have found hard and soft woods as well as good quality ply.
You might try this strategy in your towns neighborhoods. Also flooring companies (ask first) have given me access to high quality hardwood cutoffs.
Sorry I wasn't clear. People in our city neighborhoods are allowed to put pieces of furniture and demolition wood at the curb. The city will at some point come by and pick it up. If you see a house being remodeled go up and ask the foreman if you can have any tear out pieces. Usually the construction company is not allowed to put this on the curb, They have to take to a landfill. Hope that helps.
