    Your point about the trunnions being mounted to the cabinet is very important. This is a design that makes for a much better saw. Your videos are always loaded with great, practical content using affordable tools, equipment and good safety information. You are a TH-cam woodworking STAR ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

    Leah, I can not thank you enough for these diy/how-to videos. You are the best teacher in this world of wood and tools that I have ever seen. Your teaching is clear, concise, and no pun intended but, your teaching is educational. I have had some real jerks for wood-shop professors and you my friend could be the Dean at any university or college, trade/tech school, high school or any other. I wish I could meet you in person and learn first hand from you. I am nearing 60 years old and I use your classes (videos) to teach my Sons because I trust you and I understand better now than I ever did in college and high school. Finding your tube has been a godsend and I can't thank you enough.

    Great video for those looking for a table saw. One thing I would add. Research whether the saw can cut dados. Some low end and contractor saws will not take a dado stack. If dados are something you might want to cut on your table saw, this is a big consideration when buying your saw. I know that may be a bit beyond the beginner but it's definitely something to think about. Thanks for the excellent video!

    Good to see a woman! Thanks Leah, I am very new to this at the tender age of 66! And have been working by trial and error using a friends saw up till now which is not always convenient. Just bought my own Bosch gts10cx which I’m delighted with ( check it out) it is portable and it can rip and has an extendable table. I’m a bit apprehensive in using it on my own as I’ve always been in my friends workshop - also need to get a dust extractor and some safety gear which my friend is a little slack with. Pity you could t doa de o on my saw! Thanks Leah.....

    While i worked for the Arkansas Department of Correction I got to see how they make the furniture and noticed the way the wood is cut. The inmates operated the equipment and the staff who worked there showed them how to operate it safely, but there was times when some would get injured while operating it.
    I never was very good at wood working, and didn't try to do much work on the saws, and lathes used for it while in high school, or in the work place. I can't emphasize the safety features enough when explaining how to operate power equipment to others. That was so nice that you mentioned that continually during the video, and hope you have a great weekend.

    Lowe's has a really nice heavy based table saw with side table for $600. I plan to remove the flimsy metal side table top and replace it with mdf. .. then drill a hole through the center so l can mount my router.. so its a 2 for 1 space saver.
    Im saving for one to make stave cuts. Ive never used one before, so this video (and comments) was alot of help. ....thanks!

    I have a saw stop cabinet saw at my shop. great safety features. and i would suggest using ur left hand when ripping a board. use this hand to keep the stock pushed up against the fence. then when you are getting too close you can let go with ur left hand and use this hand as support for ur body when pushing the last bit through the blade. i find this makes the most accurate cut and also can prevent the board from “riding” up the blade

    Your list at the end of the video says to tie back long hair. My brother had long hair, in a ponytail, while using a table saw. His hair was very long and the ponytail swung around and got caught in the blade. Needless to say he lost some hair that day, right down to the scalp. He said he saw that blade coming at him and yanked back for all he was worth. So, TIE IT BACK AND TIE IT UP! He had no idea his hair would reach that blade. Great videos.👍

    Leah, Another great video! My first table saw was a cheaper Craftsman, about $200 and that was 20 years ago. I would add to make sure whatever table saw one picks, make sure it can handle the better after market gizmos. My Craftsman has an odd size miter slot and I have to make my own. I still have that saw, but I'm being encouraged to get a Sawstop. . Having seen a demo on a Sawstop, I learned that a spinning blade that has a safety lock, well the cheaper blades cannot handle the lock and teeth of the blade can fly! We were very lucky no one got hurt. There were some guys right in front of the blade's path. I couldn't imagine how deep a saw tooth could go into a body, but they did a great job into a post 20' away. Not sure it's as safe as any other table saw. Safety is all about the user and following the directions.

    Thank you for this video. I know it is a couple of years old, but I am making my way through your 'playlist' because the way you teach plays well with the way my brain dances. I hope that makes sense. As for saws, space is such an issue. But so is portability and weight (I'm an above knee amputee). I cannot decide if I need a good hybrid saw so that once it is delivered it will forevermore live in the space it drops in, or if a lighter worksite saw on a wheeled stand is the smarter option. Your video has given me a lot to think about- but that's a good thing! Thank you!!

    Many years ago, when I bought my first table saw, I was very naive. I purchased a low-budget saw and was ecstatic. However as time progressed I realized just what a cheap saw really cost me. The saw was never accurate in its' cuts and I didn't know why until years later. I had never even suspected that a 'new' saw would require setting up. I assumed that the blade tilt angle guide and miter gauge were accurate. I assumed that the blade was true to the fence. These, as I found out, were very bad assumptions. It took hours of intense labor to get the saw even close to what is needed for woodworking projects. I still have that saw. I keep it as a reminder that good tools come at a price.

    Good intro, Leah. I have a comment regarding a statement in the first minute. These contractor saws are great for ripping. They are too small for effective crosscut due to lack of support. It can be done if you have a lot of outboard support.. but still leaves a (big) bit to be desired.

    Leah,
    One thing I noticed is that you used your push stick close to the fence, which is less safe. You want to use the push stick closer to the blade to avoid binding the back of the cut piece against the back of the blade. By pushing closer to the blade you get a more consistent cut (because you are keeping the infeed side against the fence) and a safer cut.

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That has not been my experience with narrow rip cuts.

    • @SublimeSimplicity
      @SublimeSimplicity 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ignore the saw blade. Just think about pushing a long board forward, along the fence. If you push it forward near the fence, the opposite (front) end of the board will want to tip away from the fence. The more it tips away, the more that forward push wants to tip it more. The further away from the fence you push forward, the board wants to tip towards the fence.

    • @bobd5119
      @bobd5119 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To avoid drift, use RipStrate (Still availabe?) or those wheels that push the board toward the fence. They're persnickety, but they help on my radial arm saw.
      Also, MicroJig's Grr-Gripper looks like a nice item. I bought two on sale. Now I need a table saw for them!

    I have a dewalt table saw. Step 1) I throw away the 'fence knob' and kept the sliding part. I use a square to square up the fence before I rip. Also, if I have to rip a 4x8 23/32 plywood I have the dewalt metal saw horses, which so happen to fit a 2x4 on it's side which makes nice to put a work bench. I then attach a cut to height as same as the table, and have another 5 foot or so of 2x4 that makes an extended table. Didn't say it's practical, but for the site it just folds up and I toss it in the back of the truck. I don't use it often but as you know, manhandling a 4x8 23/32 is HEAVY and doing it by yourself you need a extension table, or another person.

    Great information! I would add that you should check the fence for rigidness, I purchased a benchtop style saw and the fence is hard to align straight and I've had some kickback. I have to measure front and back as I align the fence, very time consuming and frustrating. Had I spent a little more on a better saw I would not be dealing with this issue.

    Here's the thing, Leah ... I gotta tell you, I have never before gone to a woodworker's "swag" shop, but I went to yours. I like your items, but I was looking for a water bottle type container. I think such a product would be a great seller for you. You can do it!
    Based upon past experiences in buying such bottles for my sons sports teams, I gotta tell you a few tips:
    - Be careful about the metal ones, cuz some aren't healthy.
    - Insulated is a plus.
    - The bigger the diameter, the more better, cuz of stability.
    - Easy to clean is important to me (not so much to kids 😉).
    If you decide to go with such a product, I hope that these tips helped.

    Hi Leah! Hugh! What will they think of next! This is the first time I've heard of a hybred table saw, interesting. Over here in Thailand I have my eye on a Jet table saw when I hopefully get to set up my next hobby wood shop!

    Hi Leah
    great video as always. Question what is a trunyon and why do l want it mounted on the frame?

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cabinet mounted trunnions help to absorb and reduce vibration. In addition, when adjustments are needed they are easier to adjust than table mounted trunnions.

    I sooooo wish were my aunty and I lived next door lol. If I had a teacher like you, I'd have to keep a cot to sleep on in my garage because I would almost live in there.

    I have a Craftsman 10 inch table saw that I inherited from my dad. I have built kitchen cabinets, a kingsize bed and used it to install 1600 square feet of laminate flooring. I have a Diablo blade on it. The rpms have slowed down considerably. Is there any way to repair the motor?

    Would you still use the guard if you're ripping a thicker board like a 2x4? Or just the riving knife?

    I was given an old portable saw that was mounted on a frame. When I called Skilsaw they said they don’t make that model anymore. I can’t even get an operation manual for it. I guess I’ll be looking for a new one eventually.

    Just the information I was looking for, delivered in detail and in pleasant tone. I hope you have similar primers for other tools as well!
    Actually it took me quite a while to remember who you remind me of, The Matrix Oracle, I had to ensure from IMDB that the actor was not you ;)

    Great video. I know you didn't talk about vendors but it is a shame that you did not mention the sawstop brand. Just because of the safety features for newbies.

      Interestingly, I reached out to Sawstop prior to the making of this video and they did not respond.

    leah, i just happened across your tutorial and heard you say 'never use a mitre guage and fence together, i am a new one at using a table saw. a question, have you ever counted the so called instructors on u-tube use a fence and mitre gauge together.! they also say they have used a table saw for many years in building many items. roy (australia)

    You must have been trained by a stinkin' excellent carpenter: @ 6:41 to use your finger holding the fence as you rip as a safety in using a table saw. Well done!

    Hi Leah, love your vids. I have limited space. Is one of the portables good enough if all I'm ever going to use it for is to rip 1x's and 2x's?
