BMW 230i Coupe Review

  • I recently spent about a week and a half with the BMW 230i Coupe, and during that time I really got the chance to know the 230i and I came away happier with the little four-cylinder version of the 2 Series than with the full-on M240i variant. Why? Because it brings BMW back to basics. Or at least as much as possible.
    The BMW 230i Coupe is the entry-level 2 Series in the United States, packing a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It makes a healthy 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque which is plenty for the little 2 Series.
    It packs nowhere near the grunt of the M240i’s B58 turbocharged straight-six, nor does it make anywhere near as good a noise, but the little four-pot “B48” is a little firecracker of a motor. All of its power is in the low-to-mid rev-range, which makes it super accessible, and it’s paired-as always-perfectly with the eight-speed ZF automatic.
    Would I prefer a manual? Of course but manuals aren’t available anymore. So is it still worth buying the BMW 230i Coupe? Let's find out!

      230i m sport. 240i is pretty pricey and most roads you can’t really ring it out. 230i is plenty fast, cheaper by $10k, still dynamic driving and better gas mileage.

      230i in base trim without added performance options for less than $40k. Best deal from BMW.

    I liked your review especially because I’m an owner of this car. I got the base 230i with just the convenience package. It’s a fun little sporty coupe that get excellent gas mileage for a very reasonable price. I think it’s the best value car from BMW, assuming you don’t need the extra space. You nailed this review. Good job!

    I’m a seventy year old who is two miles from HWY 74 here is Palm Desert, Ca. One of the greatest roads in Cali. I just took delivery on my 23 230i. It’s my playground. Tomorrow I’m driving around the Salton Sea bc I’ve never done it before and there’s nobody out there. Yes, I have a SUV for road trips, but I’m in heaven with this machine that gets great mileage with great performance. Not in jail….yet.

    I'm 43 live in the UK and have had the old 230i from new for 5 years, it's been great as a second family car with one kid now aged 4. It was a bit tight in the front passenger seat with a rear-facing baby car seat in the back but since he's been sat in larger kids seats facing forward there is plenty of room. The boot is also a good shape for slotting in a large folding buggy or now a small bike. So it's fine as a smaller family daily but not so great for overnight trips away with lots of baby/toddler stuff.

    Came across a 230i drive yesterday that was available and put a deposit on it. Should arrive end of the month. I thought hard about the M240, but your statement about where you lived sealed it that I made the right choice. Living in NW Indiana, right outside of Chicago, our road are nothing but flat and boring. I feel the 230 will be perfect for what I will use it for.

    I am considering the 2023 230i with M Sport pkg as the only major option . This Blue/tan is my first choice (possibly 2nd choice white pearl ). So far the "short list" is down to this and a 2023 VW GTI S or 40th )... I had the previous Gen 2 series with the B48, really great little car. I saved about $10K opting for the 4 cylinder, now looking back on it, the resale for the B58 is about $10K higher so I would now opt for the B58 even though, it's not necessary.

    It’s going to be difficult to give objective opinions about handling dynamic if you are just driving on public roads. Wish he could have taken it to the track. RWD 4cyl vs AWD 6cyl will behave notably different at the track. There is a 300lb weight difference between them, and you can’t really exploit the AWD system unless you are really pushing it or see what 300lb off the nose feels like. At 9/10s the cars are drastically different. TheTopher did a much better track review if anyone wants to check it out. Would be nice if reviewers would actually compare cars to other cars in similar price bracket instead of stating the obvious “ the B58 is better than the B48”. Well no shit Sherlock.

    • @bmwblog
      @bmwblog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ShowMeWhatINeedToKnow
      @ShowMeWhatINeedToKnow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hate track reviews -- zero value to me. Nobody tracks their cars -- maybe one tenth of one percent of buyers, if that. It's more important how the car handles and feels on the street. Furthermore, a good track car and a street car are two different things.
