  • Join me as I take a first look at the CEM40 iOptron mount. This mount will serve as a lighter, but fully capable imaging setup that will work in solo and in support of my Astro-Physics MACH1 GTO. If you want to take a hands-on-look at the CEM40 virtually, this video is for you. A quick look at the RASA 8' and the Astro-Physics 92mm Stowaway imaging system on the CEM40.
    Thanks for watching and have a great day!

    Your video inspired me to buy a CEM40 and now I saw it in my TH-cam analytics pointing to my video on the CEM40 using it with a Celestron C8 and an ASIAIR Pro. 🙏😇

      Very nice Gowri. Let me know how it works out for you. I really like this mount. Just a little learning curve on the hand controller/software interface. But it has been a rock solid performer. Enjoy! Hope we get some clear skies soon. Take care. Thank you for watching.

    Hi, Thanks for the video. Now that you have had it for a while, what are your thoughts on it? (looking to go away from my EQ5 to something else)

    • @jeffballphoto
      @jeffballphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank for watching. The CEM40 hasn’t let me down yet. I have used it with the AP92 and RASA now for several projects. I leave it setup without weights and simply carry it out for quick sessions. It takes about 15 minutes to take everything out and get rough alignment. The only question now is how long will it perform? But it is a fantastic mount for the money and the weight. Works beautifully with ASI AIR and ASI AIR PRO. I may throw my AP130 on it just for fun. I think a 102 refractor and lightly configured 8” Short tube is kind of the upper limit for imaging. I am pretty conservative. Good luck and clear skies.

    Jeff, thanks for the unboxing!
    I was wondering how the CEM40 operated. I've got my old NEQ6 and I can see this would be quite a nice change-up in weight and overall ergonomics. At 15lbs that's a big weight savings for lugging something to and from a site!
    If I was using one alot in the field I think I'd have to replace the allen bolts you have to install/deinstall with thumb knobs if possible. Whenever I see some of those type choices engineers make I always wonder if they ever consider testing for regular setup assembly because I'd get annoyed with having to fiddle with an allen wrench in the dark! I'd probably paint that allen wrench with some glow in the dark paint to spot it if I dropped it! Same with the bolt heads! :)
    BTW, is that tripod tray on upside-down or is it intended to be a 'cup' rather than a shelf?

    • @jeffballphoto
      @jeffballphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I had the tray on correctly. LOL. I will check. I agree with the mount head bolts. I will check into an alternative that will fit the base and have a wider finger tightening grip. I will update the channel as I build some experience. As I get older, even the Mach1GTO is getting heavy for me. I really hope this mount fits into my imaging program. Thanks again and take care.

    Hi Jeff. Thanks for sharing it. I will be getting one soon. Can you please sure your thoughts on how easy to use the azimuth and latitude knobs when doing the polar alignment? I am going to use Asiair pro for the PA and it has been a pain with other mounts with poor knobs. Thank you.

    • @jeffballphoto
      @jeffballphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Andrew. I use ASI AIR Pro for PA. Could the knobs be better? Yes. They aren’t as nice as my APMach1. The could be bigger. You just have to find the sweet spot of loosening to get freedom of movement while minimizing drift when re-tightening. I have been doing it with gloves in the cold and wished for larger azimuth knobs. You will use the supplied Allen wrench on the declination for more torque. I have no trouble achieving good PA with the knobs, but they could be better. The system is impressive for its size and transport convenience. I am using it almost exclusively this winter. Thanks for watching and enjoy the mount.

      Got it. Thank you. I have an EQ6-R Pro reserved as well but my main concern is weight. If I feel an AZ GTI is a drag then the EQ6 is definitely heavy. Btw. Where did you put your Asiair Pro?

    • @jeffballphoto

      @@aww100100 I put the Pro on the tripod legs.

    • @aww100100

      Thanks. Am I right to say that if we are using Asiair pro, we aren’t using the ipolar, AccuAlign and Go2Nova all these features? Thanks.

    • @jeffballphoto
      @jeffballphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aww100100 I use the hand controller to set the zero position and the initial GoTO. After that, I use the ASIAIR for goto and plate solving. I have a visual polar scope for initial sighting of Polaris. I then use polar alignment on ASI AIR. I have also used a raspberry Pi and Stellarmate to control and align scope.

    Do You think this mount is large enough for astrophotography with my 6- inch f/7 Astro-Physics refractor & guide scope or my C-11 SCT or a 9.25 inch Celestron EdgeHD SCT?

    • @jeffballphoto
      @jeffballphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Michael. Hope all is well. No I don’t think this mount would be sufficient for the moment arm of that AP f7 or either of the heavier SCT’s. I am pretty conservative. The mount is perfect for the 92mm AP. It works for the 8” RASA quite well. I haven’t put my AP130EDF on it. Hope that helps.

    I don’t want the iPolar, i don’t want to depend on a laptop or a computer and have to lug that around as well. Is the regular visual polar scope an option you have to purchase separately, or you just take the iPolar out and downgrade? I am not familiar with iOptron, i want to move away from SkyWatcher as their quality control went to shit lately, so looking at the CEM26 or the 40 here. Thanks!

    • @jeffballphoto
      @jeffballphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I am just seeing this. Yes, I bought the visual polar scope separately and sold the ipolar on astromart. Remember , the wires split Polaris into a sphere. I can still place Polaris in the right position and then use asi air polar alignment procedure to refine the alignment to a few arc seconds.
