  • This 1970 Honda CT90 has been in storage untouched for roughly 20 years. In this video we get familiar with the machine, try to get spark and install a battery. Then we start inspecting and cleaning the carburetor and fuel system.

I got an ultrasonic cleaner for Christmas and it’s the bees knees for carbs. A couple of soaks and you’re there. I too have a habit of bringing home neglected motorcycles, it’s an investment you won’t regret.

Ive mentioned that a few times.

My cheap harbor freight ultra sonic cleaner is my go to motorcycle carbs. When they are this bad, I run them through the cleaner a couple times before I disassemble them, then run them a couple more times when disassembled. Makes a world of difference and I only use simple green degreaser in it. Im so happy when I get a notification that you guys have uploaded new video. Loved your first CT90 series and all of the content you've shared since then. I'm up to three CT-90s now, and even found one with a sidecar. The value in these has only gone up. $700 seems like a fair price for this one. Now you and camera girl have his & hers Hondas--just in time for Valentine's Day :-)

I have the EXACT same machine in my garage. I bought as a basket case and have been restoring it. Here's a few things I've run into: The rectifiers on these bikes were barely adequate from the factory and mine wasn't working at all, so I replaced it with a modern version. The wiring inside the handlebars was all shorted together and blowing the fuse because the insulation had flaked off. The potting material in the coil had leaked and the coil was shorted. Good luck with it.

I am happy for everyone who finds to the JIS screwdrivers. They are a game changer when working on old japaneses bikes. What a lovely CT90. I would really love to have one, but Honda never sold them in Europe, so you would rather find a unicorn here. So I keep on riding my faithful 70cc Honda Chaly, a cousin of theCT90. For three decades, everyone wrenching on Japanese bikes were under the illusion that the screw heads were made from cheese. Few realised that/why the "joke" screwdriwers in the bikes' toolsets fitted perfectly. Instead they put a "quality" Phillips #2 bit in the impact screwdriver and pounded away with the sledge.

Nice bike. You got yourself a great lady. Real nice of her for getting you the JIS set. I have a JIS screwdriver set for my Honda's, they are a must. I had a fourwheeler carburetor that was in worse condition than that one. I mean it was full of rust. The float was rusted to the float pin, I had to carefully disect that carb. But I did get it clean and that was three years ago and the machine is still running strong. So please clean that OEM carb and use it. I hate when people just take the easy route and buy a cheap chinese carb to put on.

You got a good deal, those are simple and easy to work on and there is still a very good market for them, I would strip it down to the frame and clean things up, paint a few things and you can get top dollar for them, all those early trail type Honda's sell quite well, I've sold a few of them and I sold every one of them within a few days of posting, the Trail 50, 70 and 90 all have the exact same style of engines, it's one of Honda's greatest sales successes.

The 70 downtube cover and airbox are kind of unique that year with the recesses for the emblems. I took a set for my 78 and restored with new emblems they look good. Be as careful as possible with those plastics. They love to crack and break easily. 700 is a decent deal for it as complete as it is and milage. I'd look at the gauge closely to see if it matches that year and any signs of tampering to be safe but it looks like the right guage and a low milage bike. If you got a title with it that's a really good deal. Fully restored these can do well. A low milage survivor could do 2k or more with a title I think. Good find!

I would save that carburetor. Get an all balls rebuild kit. Then my secret to rebuilding carbs is as follows.
Get a brake lamp from a auto parts store go to your nearest rual king or tractor supply and get the gunk brand carburetor parts cleaner. Also get the 3 brush combo kit (steel, brass, nylon) for scrubbing. Also grab a a small container of valve lapping compound (I'll explain later what this is used for) Lastly get a small tube cleaner and torch tip cleaner set.
Add the fluid to the brake lamp and pressurize it!
Use said brake lamp to spray the parts cleaner throughout all and any passages in the carburetor and parts to be reused. Generally I only use the bowl gasket and float needles. It will eat away old varnish. Like the fuel bowl, it would only take a matter of a few minutes to clean up. Use the valve lapping compound on the tip of a q-tip and put the q-tip in a drill insert the q-tip into the needle valve seat and scrub away. It will come out looking bran new and have a circular scrub pattern to help the needle seat in place. Use the torch tip cleaner to clean the main and piolet jets and emulsion tube. Use the small pipe cleaners to ram through the passages for the main and piolet holes in the carburetor. Use the scrubbers like the brass one for the brass floats and don't forget to push fluid though the carb multiple times and run through everything twice.
Almost nearly every carburetor I had cleaned this way comes back and sometimes works better than before and also check float height and hold the carb upside down and blow through the fuel inlet on the carburetor to test the needle and seat.
Sorry for the long winded comment but I love your channel and wish to share my knowledge of rebuilding mikuni, kehin and walbro ECT carbs and pass this knowledge onto you.

Back in the day when I restored old bikes I use brake fluid in the float bowls to eat the varnish out.
