    That look SO fun! I don't need another hobby, but you're making me rethink that!

      Wendy Nordstrom on the bright side, it is not a super resource-heavy hobby! Doesn't take up much space, and you can get started for less than $50 (if you have a home stove)

      How hot does pewter need to be to pour it?

    • @zatanlkken8714
      @zatanlkken8714 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Foxiepawstotti you probably found out by now XD , but pewter melts at 230Celsius. so a normal campfire would do just fine. or your stove =)

      My husband gets a forge when we buy a house... and I get to do pewter casts. That’s our deal. 😂

    Ah your making me want to try doing this! You make it look so easy! I'd be interested in a tips and tricks video for beginners! Like the note about soapstone dust and safety!

    YES! This is what I needed to do for Viking jewelry. I was able to find the beads, but not the brooches. THANKS!

    How cool! When you showed the various mold attempts, they looked like the profile of huge diamond rings 😊☺️

    Maybe you've heard about boustrophedon writing? Ancient Greek did it at some point. It means that you write one line from left to right, and the next one from right to left, then left to right, so on and so on, like this:
    -------->

    I had no idea soapstone was so soft! These look amazing!
    I have metallurgical allergies, which makes finding jewelry... expensive. ESPECIALLY since I love very organic, flowing shapes, which take more time and materials to make and aren't widely available. (Cover me in everything art nouveau, please. I may not have a favourite Worth gown, but I have a favourite necklace!) This is all to say: This is totally doable. If I swap out the metal, I could make custom jewelry that I could actually wear. I REALLY do not need another hobby, Morgan!
    Edit: It may help the metal to cool more slowly if you set the mold on a warm surface, such as a hot plate, to heat up before the casting starts.

    Would you ever consider making non-medieval era objects? I recently saw a victorian(?), pewter thimble holder in the shape of a cat that was just too darn cute!

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That sounds adorable! Link? I am open to other times (even if 1400-1600 is my fav!), so I'd love to check out the cat thimble holder!

      M F How fun!! It's possible to cast this in soapstone, but it's 3d enough that a silicone mold would be easier! I'll have to think about what would be the best material to make the positive master out of.

    Hi, great video :-) Could you make a video that shows how you make the pewter bumps in the corners that connects the mold halves? Also type of burner? do you use to melt the pewter?

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I will definately do a basic stone prep video! As for the melting pot, it's a Lee pot, and mine is quite similar to this one: amzn.to/2ot1wxC

    Have you ever made a 2 sided cast? Last year I tried to teach myself to make a coin but was only successful on the one side. This video inspired me to try using soapstone! Thank you!

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kayle Miller hi there! Did you have any particular sort of ladies favor in mind? I'm familiar with the idea of a lady giving her veil/sleeve/purse/ random other object on her person, is that the sort of thing you're thinking about?

    Good day to you... I have a question about the metal content of your pewter. Does it have lead in it or is a pewter "type" of modern metal that leaves the lead out?

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I use a blend of 98% tin, with a bit of bismuth, antimony, and copper. No lead in my pewter!

    • @lightdark00
      @lightdark00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice to see my question answered here. Even though the only issue I have is with the weight. I saw lots of pewter growing up and it was always blackened, that's why I never liked it before seeing this.

    What was the chisel like tool used for carving?

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a little collection of tools that I have re-purposed from their original task! The chisel might have originally been a wee screwdriver: I also use dental picks, nails, broken old files, drill bits, dremel heads, whatever is handy and makes a good mark!

    One of my more useless skills is that I can easily write backwards, for years I’ve wondered what to do with this skill….. now it looks like I need to learn how to do metal casting to make use of my “mirror” writing!
