After driving many EV’s from Tesla’s to, ID.3, ID.4, MG4, Kona, e-Niro, Ioniq, Mach-e, Leaf, Ariya etc I still think the BMW i3 is still one of the most quirky, fun and stylish EV’s I’ve ever driven. I had one for 4 days and still have a massive itch to buy one. I’ve actually been looking at used i3’s on the current market and love them in the red and black paint option. Certainly a lot of car for the money. Perfect now we no longer needs prams and we already have a larger EV for holiday away etc.

We have an i3 and it’s absolutely brilliant. We use it as city car. It is actually roomier than it looks. Load space is adequate, particularly with rear seats down.

Hi EVM, greetings from Oxford. Wow, having seen your previous review of the i3, I was slightly surprised to see this video from you. I bought a new i3 in 2019, I still have it, I still love it! As a daily commuter it is just superb. I think you will like it. It doesn’t have the range or charging speed of a Tesla, but it’s a super car that will never rust and has reliability and build quality in spades. Welcome to the club!

Great choice I also have a Tesla 3 and we bought an i3 last week for my Wife also an I3S also a 70 plate , Its fantastic ....you will find that the apple car play only takes up 60 percent of the screen so I had this coded to fill the screen (about 50 quid) no rear camera on ours so having one fitted that comminicates with I drive and maintaines all BMW parking lines etc .The cupholder in the armrest area will fit in front of the front cupholder in one of the three slots also .The front boot will let in water so we have bought a watertight Ikea box with lid that fits perfecly ( Salma 22 litre) . On a run into Yorkshire last week we achieved 4,5 miles PKWH but have averaged around 3.4 this week on general pottering about .

I like the reverse rear doors. Makes it much easier for me to put a folded compact wheelchair back there. Tighter parking spots don’t have to get around the doors as opening is on the same place.

My first EV was an i3. Loved it. Best Traffic Light GP ever. Best tip car ever - amazing how much you can get in with the seats down. Tiny turning circle. I would have an i3S one day.

The heated seats are standard as is the cruise control. You don’t have adaptive cruise control that was an extra. 4 miles kWh 190 miles in summer. 1,300 kg an id3 is 500Kg heavier. You will absolutely love it. Oh the sunroof and black wheels were also extra.

Owned the original i3 Rex (2017) for 4 years and 60,000 miles. It remains one of the best cars I have owned. Light, agile, RWD with brilliant steering feel due to those narrow wheels so you felt connected to it. Great visibility and ride height, Brilliant turning circle. BMW have lost their way! Did my end of ownership review on my YT channel and it gets the most views and comments although now obsolete.
Still own an Ariel Atom for my true kicks, but wife & I both hot hatch lovers. Her e-208 is also a fun drive. Not as punchy as the i3S though!

I've got a standard i3 and absolutely love it. It's a brilliant car and I plan to keep it for a long time - unless I change it for an "S" of course!
I prefer the standard interior over the leather which puddles as soon as you look at it and quickly looks old! Cruise and heated seats were standard.
It's not too big and easy to use around town / shops etc but comfortable enough for longer trips. Range is easily 180 miles in the summer, which is very good for what it's designed to do. The 50kW DC is slow by today's standards but it will stay close to 50 at high battery percentages so it's still very usable for longer trips
It's quick - the i3 does not have Sport so Comfort is the full fat setting - strange! I tone it down to Eco to soften the throttle response, unless I'm involved in a traffic light GP of course! lol
The S is definitely a hot hatch !

I’ve had two i3S’s. For the last 4 years. First one a rare 33kWh Rex model and second one is the run out unique forever special edition I bought new and fully specced in 2022 in Aventurine red. I love them! The boot may be smallish on seats up ( bigger than the mini though by quite a lot ) but when the seats are down it becomes a little van with a completely flat load area and no lip which can fit very surprising things in. In my case a 140cm high freezer … and I still managed to fit my dad in the front passenger seat … it’s like a tardis- and with proper ties down anchor points too. 😅😂 even after 4 year and with so many newer cars on the market swapping the i3S for something else would be a wrench as it’s so unique and just brilliant in its own way, hence .. I’m not and at the end of this year when my PCP term comes to the end I’m fully intending to pay the balloon 🎈 😊❤

Had a 2019 I3s as a company car and absolutely loved it. Got it with my head and it left with my heart. As a petrolhead I really wasn’t keen at the thought but it was such a saving and when it had to go back it had got under my skin. I have a M3LR now which I love but it’s not got that go kart appeal of the I3s. I think the I3s will be a classic one day, so innovative.

Great purchase and good price. Downside is that it looks like you got one with the small central screen that they fitted when they were short of chips a couple of years ago. I have a 2019 i3 that I purchased new - and got the government grant available at the time - and it has been a great car. Nearly five years old and never missed a beat with only regular service and MOT's. Needed a new set of tyres at four years and 20k miles but it does encourage a heavy right foot! Just a pity they stopped making them because the design looks a fresh as when it was launched in 2013. Problem is what do you replace it with which is as much fun - and for me it has to have stalks, knobs and beepers.

Borrowed an i3S a few years ago, and loved it. Now own a Tesla M3 LR, which is also a great car and I need for towing. If I didn't need the towing capability then an i3/i3S would be my choice. For towns and cities and country roads in our region it makes sense and lots of fun. Is future tyre availability an issue? When our 2012 Leaf is done (still getting 60 miles range), we'll be looking at i3s.

Wonderful hot hatch. My fav BMW because BMW drivers didn't buy it, it bought other EV buyers new to the brand who'd never normally look at a BMW. Amazing engineering.
Not too keen on the triangle of doom in supermarket parking with the way the seat belt is attached but I could live with it. Older ones with the 3g TCU would wind me up though if I couldn't remote control my car from the app.

I've got a feeling that it may be one of the safest small EVs around too, thanks to the CF. If you look at the IIHS small offset test, it ploughs straight on, like a Model Y would. Though the light weight is obviously going to be a problem if it hits something large. Still, stick to sheep, cats etc. and you're golden!

The S looks great. Fantastic, a massively underrated car. I agree with everything you said about this brilliant, quirky vehicle. In my opinion, new models now are still behind on the ideas that went into its design. Im sure you'll have loads of fun and enjoyment owning it. (Isn't it the electric car that Harry would have liked?I'm sure he mentioned it in a previous video)
Are you serious about the go faster body kit, though? It's a bit chavy for a Yorkshire man, although you won't look out of place when you come down to Newcastle, Staffs in it, among the farting Corsas and hydrafoiled civics, if you fit it 😁🤣🤣
Andy, please, when you do the detailing video, can you let us know which products you're using. Im keen to detail my i3.but I'm apprehensive in case there's a chemical reaction due to the plastic and carbon panels.

The i3S was the first non-Tesla EV that got me interested in driving electric (many years ago, I’m glad there’s a lot more choice now). 100% agree with you the design is amazing and still looks contemporary despite how old it is. The grills on other BMW electric are just too gross! Particularly the i7 🤢. Unfortunately for us when we were looking to replace my wife’s car the only i3 in budget at the time where really grotty REX’s and I refuse to buy them. We also sadly couldn’t quite justify a second EV. Regretfully an i3 may never be on the shortlist now, but I must say it looks like you’ve got a good one! I have a soft spot for Mii’s so would struggle to chose which to keep - i3S might just take the spot 😆

I was actually surprised when I saw it was the i3S, as I was expecting a Cupra Born, having seen so many V1 spec examples in the low 20's. I would have to agree with you that the S is a hot hatch, given the performance and chuckability of the thing. Would I buy one? I don't know. I like the unique looks, my wife doesn't. I like the suicide doors, they were executed better than the newer Mazda MX-30. But having discussed a 2nd EV for our family, it looks like we'll be going for another BMW hot hatch, the Mini Electric. Not as unique, but definitely a fun to drive EV.
Love your videos, hope you'll be at Fully Charged Live/Everything Electric in Harrogate in May, it would be nice to meet up and chew the fat.

I love our i3. As a family car it is extremely compromised. The boot is too small. The suicide doors are annoying in car parks and it’s only a 4 seater. Yet the Ford Focus stays parked and we all pile in the i3. When pushed it is skittish though (I always wondered how the i3s drove) and I wish I got the version with the bigger battery and without the range extender. But we’ve had it for close to 5 years and will probably never sell it.

  • @paulleonard1296

I love the I3 and even owned one for a brief time. Seeing as you can get a Model 3 SR+ for about the same price now which is more efficient (somehow) and even faster it'd be difficult to not to choose that instead. Then you have the slow charging speed and short range. They have to depreciate a lot more before I'd be able to justify another. Great cars though, especially in the city.

I seriously looked at an i3 way in 2014 when they were first launched. Had 2 test drives, but it was early days in the EV journey and I didn’t get one ! Probably regret that decision now. Only just migrated to a self charging hybrid! The way the car market is at the moment there are a lot of people losing a lot of money amongst a glut of used EV’s which is an upside for a potential buyer at the moment 👍😎

Think I own your ideal i3S….2021 black AC Schnitzer body kit including wheel spacers, suspension and interior foot pedals. Every i3S extra from factory including Harman Kardon, leather, heat pump, sunroof, black wheels, etc etc. car was £45,675 new and was a bmw demonstrator prior to my ownership. Car is superb…our 3rd i3. Only has less than 5.5k on clock. Only downside is as expected….Ride is harsh…but handling is superb. In July 2022 vehicle indicated 200 mile range….took a picture as I’d never seen this before! Enjoy your bargain i3S

We have a MY LR and a 2020 i3s similar to yours but white, ours no sunroof but has HK. Still prefer driving the i3s to the MY because it's much more fun, it's so light and chuckable, super easy to live with in town (MY bit of a barge in that respect). Of course for longer journeys the MY wins hands down due to range and feels more planted on motorway (i3s is better than i3 in that respect but can still be fatiguing in bad conditions on longer journeys). They're both great cars, each has it's own strengths.

Sensible choice :-) I have an i3 and they are just the best EV. Smaller battery and great range. No dints either :-)
I paid £24K for my 2019 2.5 years ago with 18K on the clock during the used car price hike due to the past few years madness, however its got the Loft Interior. That said even with the price drops I am still more than happy as its going to be a classic and keeps me smiling.
The charging speed is excellent due to the efficient battery and weight meaning mostly it takes less than 30mins to top up from just below half.
I get a reliable 160 miles under almost all conditions. In summer it well exceeds this and into the 180+
But for me who travels less than 100 miles a week ! Its perfect and also for the longer runs too as the EV charger networks expand. Also we can use Tesla chargers for a cheaper more reliable charge occasionally. Anyway a smart choice.

I think the cost of building a CF tub might be the main reason BMW ditched the idea.
As for your brake pads surely the most important improvement for EV brake pads would be corrosion resistance? From what I've heard they normally rot away before they wear out.

Went from a mini cooper s to my i3s and the handling doesn't even come close to the mini. Still absolutely love it though. Front suspension top mounts fail. So keep an eye on that.

If it suits 99% of your use, why not just rent a car for the 1%? That’s what I’ve done. My i3 is perfect for the 99%, and saves me a fortune over my old diesel golf, which more than pays for hiring a nice car for holiday

When you reviewed the MX30 you showed how the rear door could potentially slam against the front door if it was closed first. Presumably that's still an issue with the i3 as well? As a father of 3 and 7 year olds that would become a potential deal breaker!
