Just incredible! The first time I heard Mss, Dimitrova I disliked her rendition in Turandot as I thought she was screaming, but this video helps me understand that her voice is just HUGE. What a fearsome experience for most tenors to sing with sopranos with such tremendous voices. Thank you for posting!
She had a great triumph in this role at the Metropolitan in New York i believe. I love the guts and sheer honesty she brings to her singing here. She never cheats or takes the easy way out. No wonder the audience adores her.

Gira su TH-cam una registrazione del 1952 di Suicidio cantata dalla Callas, che rimane ineguagliata (e che invito gli amici melomani callasiani e non ad ascoltare) ma che non voglio prendere come pietra di paragone. Dimitrova aveva una voce potente, che ben si adattava ai ruoli drammatici, e un registro basso di tutto rispetto. Capisco che l'Arena di Verona è un luogo ad alta dispersione di suono, ma quelle ultime due frasi "Tocco alla meta, domando al cielo... dentro l'avel" sono le vere due trappole di quest'aria, dove il registro basso-bassissimo deve dare prova di resistenza e tenuta. Ghena non le canta alla perfezione (ritarda l'abbassamento per gestire meglio il fiato), ma è indubbiamente il più bel Suicidio post-Callas che abbia sentito. Brava.

This is beautiful in that she puts the emotions into it. Robin Follman is the other singer who puts the full weight of the emotion into it rather than just singing it.

I have heard many "Suicidios" and was asked to prepare a soprano to sing it years ago. I must say that of all that I have heard Dimitrova's rendition here in 1988 is the best. To line up my choices 2nd: Callas, 3rd: Tebaldi, 4th: Eva Marton. I eliminated in this line-up a great singer whose voice here presents a wobble. I won't do injustice to her great career by mentioning her name.

Poi la frattura e il non legato che prende il Si bemolle di "DORmir queta" non è una gran bellezza. Ma Gioconde così non si ascoltavano più allora e oggi manco per niente. Peccato che nessuno si sia ricordato di lei per trovare delle alternative italiche in ruoli di certo Wagner pre Walchiria. L'estraneità poi ad una vera proiezione in maschera ascendente al belcanto ottocentesco ma la ricerca invece di una compattezza a livello di faringe unita a un sostegno-mantice inesausto (e perfetto!!!) l'avrebbero resa più che adatta a certo Wagner. Ricordo la Loreley al Filarmonico: quello era il suo mondo, non Norma o Lombardi alla Prima crociata. E francamente di Loreley, Isabeau, Wally, Giorgetta francamente si sente la mancanza da troppo tempo. Detto da uno che ascolterebbe sempre solo Arsace, Malcolm, Calbo, Tancredi....

Yes...I've read about that. I do not think Tebaldi nor Milanov have the right voice to sing Gioconda at all, their voices are not heavy, dark nor robust enough. Gheda in the other hand does have exactly the voice to sing Gioconda, she simply lacks finesse, musicianship and the emotional effect that Callas has for this role and everything she sings. A Gioconda needs dynamics!
That is what a lot of people think, she wasnt as expressive as Callas, but live, lots said the voice was prettier and some said even bigger( people just rely too much on recording).To sing in sul fiato, big projecting free voice , of course it is even more work to convey expressions and nuances than those ventriloquist mouse voices singers of nowadays using and abusing microphones....any tiny , slight humming can be captured.For people that just repeat like parrot that she wasnt expressive, should first take 10 years minimum to try to learn the sul fiato technique.She was expressive, not as much and as nuanced as Callas( and Callas was very smart and hard study singer, and knew how to record well in studio with perfeccionism in style, dynamics and expression as well as live)But for few that really know about singing technique, styles, and etc knows she was stylish as well, again, not as good as Callas, but who is? Even Scotto , Gencer, Zeani,Gruberova, Moffo ,Dimitrova, Nilsson, Popp,Sutherland( yes, she was stylish as wel) Verret,are /were shadowed by Callas. Some people say she didnt study as hard as Callas, thus , having difficulty in singing some repertoire or coloratura.Well, everybody tries to sing with the best they have.Its pathetic that some people think that Caruso just opened his mouth and sang like he sang, well, he was a hard and dilligent in studying singing( one of best legato and expressiveness), but few know that he studied all his life( too bad he died so young) and had to change the costume frequently during every performance due to his fisiological and correct singing that make real good singers tired and sweaty, not like nowadays singer with sound enhancement with no style(most dont even trill properly ) ,technique, legato and expression, they just have to be attemptive to know how to sound good with mic around or even hidden inside the costume and having some good agents and contacts...they just have to try to act histrionic and look good .Tebaldi s voice was way better live than recording ,but well, this is the problem with the opera singing, voice with lots of harmonics and full body voice sound small and distorted with mic, and recording selectively only pick some harmoncs and frequencies. this favors nowadays s singers with non full body, with non chiaro scuro, non core and no ring, strained , tight small voices that emulate to try to sound " velvety" in videos or audios , but live, almost inaudible.The one dimensional , non projecting voice and some tenorish voice sound gargantuan with mic ,the opposite happens with the very full harmonic and resonant voices.She was expressive and stylish and her beautiful angelic free voice with beautiful legato....but well, you can always follow most of people that never even heard her live and keep repeating like parrot the ones on the middle or the bell curve, saying the king s robe is wonderful, or you can try to listen all of her work to enlighten yourself...
I respect Callas but find her unbearable to listen to. Here, this one is a much superior interpretation than Callas ever gave. Dimitrova has a clear and powerful voice, one cannot deny this

Some people say she didnt study as hard as Callas, thus , having difficulty in singing some repertoire or coloratura.Well, everybody tries to sing with the best they have.Its pathetic that some people think that Caruso just opened his mouth and sang like he sang, well, he was a hard and dilligent in studying singing( one of best legato and expressiveness), but few know that he studied all his life( too bad he died so young) and had to change the costume frequently during every performance due to his fisiological and correct singing that make real good singers tired and sweaty, not like nowadays singer with sound enhancement with no style(most dont even trill properly ) ,technique, legato and expression, they just have to be attemptive to know how to sound good with mic around or even hidden inside the costume and having some good agents and contacts...they just have to try to act histrionic and look good .Tebaldi s voice was way better live than recording ,but well, this is the problem with the opera singing, voice with lots of harmonics and full body voice sound small and distorted with mic, and recording selectively only pick some harmoncs and frequencies. this favors nowadays s singers with non full body, with non chiaro scuro, non core and no ring, strained , tight small voices that emulate to try to sound " velvety" in videos or audios , but live, almost inaudible.The one dimensional , non projecting voice and some tenorish voice sound gargantuan with mic ,the opposite happens with the very full harmonic and resonant voices.She was expressive and stylish and her beautiful angelic free voice with beautiful legato....but well, you can always follow most of people that never even heard her live and keep repeating like parrot the ones on the middle or the bell curve, saying the king s robe is wonderful, or you can try to listen all of her work to enlighten yourself...
I respect Callas but find her unbearable to listen to. Here, this one is a much superior interpretation than Callas ever gave. Dimitrova has a clear and powerful voice, one cannot deny this
