I inherited my grandmother's 2007 Toyota Camry after she passed away. Completely paid off, only 41K miles on it, and I plan to drive it until it falls apart. I don't need a car payment!

I had an engine go out on me once. I bought a 2-year-old Traverse with cash, and the engine blew out after two years. Luckily, it wasn't me, and the powertrain warranty was good for five years, so I got a new engine at no cost. No problems since.
There isn't much to maintain on a 2015 car other then put correct gas do oil change on engine.
I drive a paid off 2010 Honda Civic with 120K miles on and I do feel inferior when people drive better cars. But these calls make me feel better. I make $57K and only $50K on my mortgage left. Selfish as it sounds I thank these callers 🤣

You are winning with that philosophy. My wife and I make a lot more than $57k, and I drive a 2010 Mazda3 with 155k miles.
i drive a 1994 chrysler lebaron. it works FINE. Repainted, undercoated for rust. clean inside and out. it's never in the shop and has hauled me all over the country. other people can look down their noses all they please - and can pay out to a mechanic, too, for the endless repairs needed. 😁

When you are poor. You only can drive a car that 10% worth of you annual income so you will not be so broke.
Finally someone that sees the "forest for the trees"..I had to re-adjust my spending habits when I had to go on disability... Not because I "wanted too" but I lost nearly all of my savings in the process, and in order to recover, I had to live well below my past standards to be able to live in today's AND be able to save and rebuild my Emergency Fund
And stop having kids you cannot afford

The 2015's had a recall because of this issue, because of a manufacturing defect. I have a 2014 that was fortunately made before the defect happened. 😁

@@golferpro1241 if he knew, perhaps. Maybe he wasn't aware. I know I found out about a year after buying a used car that it was in the Takata Air Bag recall. And I only found out because I searched for it, out of curiosity, because I knew that was a wide-sweeping problem.

Thats why getting on a plan to get debt free and stable is important. Because financial messes almost never include an easy way out. Thats just not how life works.

Toyota highlanders and Avalons are great used cars that you can drive many of miles on with low maintenance. That's what this guy should do buy one of those sell and fix the other cars.

Hyundai and Kia has recalled some of their cars due to engine failures.
Yep, I though they still had 10 yr powertrain warranty... so yeah he blew it up.

Ever since I started listening to you I just think about Car loans and car so differently. It frustrates me to the core that my dad is about to retire has zero money zero savings, and has a $600 per month jeep payment that he refuses to get rid of. Smh I can’t really help if he doesn’t help himself.

Finding a used engine for his car in a junkyard is not as easy as Dave is making it sound. You can't put just any engine.

Good luck finding the right one. Engine and transmission are usually the first thing to go at the junk yard on any car
2015, 2.7L Honda Engines are everywhere. He can get a good used running one, with a warranty for around $1500, and I am sure there are plenty of them in LA, but if not he can have it crated and shipped for a $200. They are easy engines to swap too, about another $1000 labor.

I have the 2012 Tuscon and works well but it needs proper maintenance. I am curious to figure out how he destroyed that engine ..

I haven't had a single problem with my Santa Fe. I've driven it on so many road trips and I've taken it on countless trails when I hike and have never had a problem with it. As long as you service your car you should be OK. This guy probably ran it without changing the oil.
The 2015-2017 Tucson motors had defects. The block casting was bad and it would cause metal filings to cut loose and chew up the motor internally.

Had a friends 2012 Hyundai engine seize at a stop light, long story short the dealership replaced the engine at no cost due to extended warranty.
When an engine or transmission goes and the warranty is expired, its usually a write off

Depending on the engine size if its the 2.4 4 cylinder and a threw the rod its under a warranty. It might be worth it to call the a dealer give the vin number and see might get a short block done for free.

There's known recalls on those Hyundai engines
Get a used engine in the Hyundai and sell it or scrap it as is. Keep the car that's reliable, get it paid off and drive it into the ground but take care of it. Get a better job than making $40k in LA, good Lord.

That only applies to first owner Hyundai’s. So if you basically have to buy it brand new for this apply. If you are second owner than bumper to bumper warranty only applies.

Lol and here I am making 285k a year (with wife) and feel that a 30k car is way above our budget. What is wrong with people.
As a personal experience in the past, the bank took me to court for collection on the debt. THEY DIDN'T WANT THE CAR. I had to pay the debt and kept the car that didn't run. Don't always count on the bank actually repossessing the car.
The bank are not interested in the car they are interested in repayment.
The car is just a means to create a DEBT
The doesn't want a freaking car...the car is about the consumer's emotion, it is only a TOOL 🔧 to control the behavior of the person in DEBT.
For the most part which is the better situation...
A) Having said car for half a DECADE .....or
B) Collecting PAYMENTS for Half a Decade....

2015 Tucson probably has a recall engine that was known to have problems. That’s well known info Dave. You didn’t focus on the blown engine (mileage, situation, recall), Hyundai/Kia have 100k coverage on powertrain!

I bought a $5k car in 2014 and literally just sold it. I put a little money into it when I first bought it but I could ALWAYS rely on it starting when I turned the key

If that car has the Theta II engine in it the manufacturer may replace it for free. There’s a recall on them.
Hyundai sounds about right for their engine. Should listen to Scotty Kilmer you would tell you that car has a problem
Call Hyundai, there’s a motor defect with some Hyundai motors that Hyundai will replace for free no matter the mileage.

Use the savings to fix the car that works, sell it and the other one then buy two $5k cars.

Only private dealers have it this cheap car inflation at its highest right now even used car.lots I looked myself.
